Mantle Feedback/Bugs

lol you couldn't make that stuff up above, Matt posts a video showing Mantle's benefits then 2 minutes later Duvar posts a vid saying it's worthless if you use 8.1 :D

This forum is brilliant at times.

The 290X in the Video always uses Mantle and you can see that the performance drops a lot when using Win 8.1...

R9 290X
Win 7+Mantle = good
Win 8.1 + Mantle = bad

GTX 780 Ti
Win 7+ DX11 = not so good
Win 8.1 + DX11.1 = good

So, it looks like, that Mantle isn t optimized for Win 8.1 but the Nvidia Cards are getting a huge performance boost with Win 8.1 (here 780 Ti + 20 FPS) and the gap is closed that Mantle created.
At the end of the video he got a problem and couldnt test @ Full HD and Mantle under Wind 8.1 with 4xAA, he said that he got 50 FPS so he didn t show that etc...

I enabled automatic caption translation on that video.... not quite sure its talking about GPU stuff ;)

Guys, fresh Video from Germany.
Under Windows 8.1, Mantle is destroyed... (Direct X 11.1 is the key)
Nvidia clearly wins here.

Interesting vid. So Mantle is clearly running better on DX 11 over DX 11.1. I thought it would be the other way round in fairness. I am not too bad at German and can understand most of it.

1080P, double the FPS is places

Wonderful demonstration of the Mantle effect. Make sure you watch in 1080P/1440P/2160P quality.

------

720P, no one plays at 720P on a GPU like that, that res- is not putting any stress on anything at all so Mantle is not doing its job, different parts of the game are better for different GPU's, by using settings that make Mantle irrelevant you can easily make the 780TI look faster in DX.

I see. Good find

Recently got an MSI R9 290 Gaming so was keen to give the Mantle drivers a go. Had an issue with the card in that one fan was stuck so temperatures were getting to 90oC and assumed that was the reason for frequent crashes in BF4. Once the temperature problem was resolved I continued to get crashes with the game freezing and then reverting to a black screen - I had to use Task Manager to shut down the BF.exe to recover from this). Strangely though there could be long periods of stability for an entire evening and then the following morning crash after crash after crash; there is no sense to it.

I decided to go back to the last set of stable drivers (13.12) and stability has been excellent but I do notice a drop in FPS; which I will take for the time being until Mantle is sorted.

It looks like Mantle could be good but I think the Beta was released too early; cynically I think there was maybe a deadline and the focus was on hitting that rather than being brave enough to say its not ready yet.

Andy

Gave the 14.1 drivers another chance tonight and they ran BF4 flawlessly without a single crash. Makes me think they are temperamental from an installation point of view.

Aye BF4 is to blame me thinks, although having played it today for a few hours it's a lot better than it was.

Will be interesting to see it in action for Thief.

lol so true.

Doesn't surprise me, so it's not really nvidia being so good more that the OS is hampering the other...

Always helps for comparison purposes - not! :p

I wish i could say the same...Been gaming with my German mate for 3-4 years, always on Skype and know probably less German now than i did back then :D

Luckily he speaks better English than half the people i work with! :D

I also game on TS with a few Germans and when they get fully going, I can't understand them either :D When it is slower, it is much easier for me to understand.

TLDR; beta drivers mate. Compare when it's finished.
At the end of the day everyone should be grateful that graphics API has some competition.

One thign i noticed.

If i start my pc up and do stuff like normal aka check email watch youtube or porn or we :P and i start BF4 after fps is all over the place CPU usage jumps and ****.

If i reebot my pc and start bf4 str8 after 70-71fps SOLID all the time cpu and gpu usage all normal.

Interesting must be Mantle bug of some srot ??
