Many thanks to merlin

Well everyone here seems to be focusing on the deal done with merlin and the moral implications of selling it straight on, for me that's not the issue at all.

The issue is that Jez is trying to be a "dealing wheeling car dealer wannabe" without taking on any of the responsibility that entails. Posing as a private seller, lying about the reason for sale, not paying any tax on profits from his buying & selling, giving the buyer no comeback if there does happen to be a problem with the car...

As someone who does pay their taxes, and as an ordinary everyday consumer, this sort behaviour just gets on my wick, OK?

you'll get a better deal from a dealer if you take finance rather than pay cash as they get a kickback from the finance company as well as the price of the car.
most dealers don't really want a cash buyer.
Yeah cash buyer was the wrong term. I just meant that the dealer not having to deal with a part ex can sometimes bag you more off the screen price.

Mick.

I think you need to chill a little.

Hes making a sale attractive to people, by telling a white lie. Big deal, welcome to the world of business.

Jez has very recently started buying a selling cars on the side, and I imagine has realised how much profit is avaliable for little work. I know from conversations I've had with him that he is in the stages of registering as a trader. Once he has sorted out all his policy insurance, legal registrations etc.

It's hardly a white lie, if anything it's misrepresentation. This is not how legitimate business is done.

Well he should wait until this is done then.

Ill have some of what your drinking.

You can declare all previous transactions once registered... How do you know he isn't going to do this?

He's making false claims to make the deal more attractive and absolve himself of any dealer responsibility, how is that not misrepresentation?

I don't, how do you know he is? But if he is, why would he be making false claims in his current sales?

Hes not pretending to be a dealer because he isnt at this moment in time.
Saying that the car is going because of a new company car whether its true or not doesnt affect the car or condition of the goods in the slightest. It just increases consumer confidence. Its not like hes saying the gearbox is fine, but in reality its full of sand.

I don't either, but you seem hellbent on tarnishing someones online reputation based on assumptions and not facts.

Exactly, this is why it's wrong.

I'm basing my current opinion on the FACT that he has lied and contradicted himself in the advert, no assumption there.

What about nearly every salesman in the world, who says this product is the best etc etc etc. ? Isnt that increasing consumer confidence through lies?

No, it isn't.

For instance your opinion on most cars is based on.... well what you've read.

This used to be very true when I first started posting in Motors but over the last few years I've made a real effort to get out there and actually drive many of the cars I have opinions on - a) becuase it's fun and b) becuase it expands my knowledge. Last week for example I took out an A4 3.0 Cab :D

For instance your comments about my neon "nobody bought them because they are rubbish"
No, nobody bought them because the pre99 cars were ugly as sin, Ford for instance have made only 3 cars in the past 10 years that are quicker and better equipped than my R/t, those being the Focus RS, the focus ST and the st 220.
(0-60 in 7.7 seconds and 132 mph) to save the hassle of googling.
Its reliable, handles well, but your opinion that its rubbish is qualified on.... what?

I hadn't really understood just quite how good the deal you got was - my opinion was based on how regular Neons are not really very special and are not as good as similarly priced rivals. I did actually say it was a pretty good buy for the money, even more so now you explain quite how good the R/T version is. :)

Well, I apologise.

There's a difference between giving a sales pitch and telling a blatent lie.

Its a white lie.. that doesnt change anything about the car at all. Its purely there to attract people/increase confidence.

If you dont get that, then :(

Playing devils advocate here cos tbh what Jez does with his property is his business, it does matter - lots of people myself included prefer to buy cars from private sellers when it feels 'right' - ie, you turn up and see a guy who loves his car, doesnt want to sell but has upgraded, just got a company car, etc etc and it makes you feel so much better about the purchase. I felt much better for knowing the guy I bought my car off sold it becuase he had upgraded to the 06 model of the same car, not becuase he was simply buying and selling at a profit whilst retaining the free-from-rights benefits of a private seller rather than making it official.

I understand what you're saying perfectly, I'm just saying you're wrong. Do you get that?
