Maradona

I've always thought of him as the best player of all time. I'm too young for Pele, but I witnessed Maradona from 1986 onwards. Players like Zidane and Ronaldo were excellent and a joy to watch, but Maradona was in a different league.

I've watched that 'Awesome passes' video I linked a few times now and it's just breath taking. The determination of his dribbling. The way the ball appears to stick to his feet always in control and the quality of his passes are unrivalled in my generation.

I guess the nearest we have to Maradona is Gazza. Not in the same league, but still he had great vision and was also a joy to watch in his prime.

Fixed...no one reminds me more of Maradona than Messi at the moment...but i remember growing up watching Maradona play in the '86 WC finals...he was simply sublime and even in the '94 WC finals in America he showed the world that he still had it although he was way past his prime.

I've forever thought he was the best ever. Some of the new clips I saw earlier which I hadn't previously seen confirmed it.

Find some of the ones of him playing for Barca and Napoli, he was ****ing immense.

And promptly returned home disgraced.

Great player probably the best ever. There is no way he should be used as any kind of role model at the way he had chucked away his football career.

Heavy drink and drugs problems. 2 bans for drugs countless cheating on his wife and an illegitimate son in Italy.

Questionable friendships with people like Castro and chavez and some Italian crime families. Quotes such as "I hate everything that comes from the United States. I hate it with all my strength."

How much better could he be without that almost 2 year drug ban?

Why the hell hasnt some one made the maradona movie yet?:D His life story is full of drama even up to his problems with weight, becoming a chat show host and much more.

I dont like to compare him with messi. Purely as a football player than yes its spot on but as a person messi seems quite removed from Diego's old lifestyle and i hope he stays that way.

incredible on the pitch and hilarious off it

when he showed up to announce the argie squad last month half of argentina watched as he ran over a paparazzi cameramans foot in his mini cooper then stopped to call him an Ahole. i believe he said he will streak if they win the WC too

capello should take note of how he actually tried out his players for the WC and gave them equal chances impress him

Oh he was better than that. Much better than that.

Zidane, Figo, Ronaldo (Fat & thin), Messi were all world class. Maradona was the best

You can't knock Maradona though, he is the best at everything he wants to do.

Football - Check
Drug Taking - Check
Eating - Check

Plus he had his fair share of skirt as well. Hung out with the Italian Mafia for ***** and Giggles and wasn't scared of taking shots the media with an air rifle.

No problem at all in saying he is my sporting hero above anyone else

Personally i dont care about his personal life...if anything its made him the character he is today...as a footballer he was the best bar none even to this day...as a person yeh sure he wasnt great but who cares...its his footballing skills that majority of people will remember for lifetimes to come.

And yes as a footballer he should be compared to Maradona but as a person?? no as Messi seems to have a good head on his shoulders plus im pretty sure his family keeps him well grounded...not so sure about Maradona and his parents...some people find it hard to deal with fame and fortune and it goes to their heads...in the case of Maradona it completely went all over the place:p

Aye, proper Legend.

I would love to get away with the stuff he does.

"Why the **** did you do that"

"Because I am the best footballer that has ever lived"

Agree 100% there Spawn. When he was from the time he was at Napoli onwards he had an entourage of hangers on and vultures advising him for their benefit not his.

It's only the little 'In-Ger-Lunder's' who go on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on about the hand of god goal and the drug taking. The rest of the planet will always remember him for the second goal against England and that goal against Belgium in '86

Yep and also remember he more or less came from the slums of Argentina...so had no formal education as it was plus surrounded by leeches...much like Tyson was in his heyday...it was no surprise that he went off the rails as he did. But as a footballer, i dont think anyone has come quite close to the natural skill he possessed from day one.

Never ever get tired of watching him rip apart the English defence back in '86 singlehandedly.

Maradona good; Pelé better

See now I actually rate Maradona as better than Pele...for 1 single reason. Pele played his entire career (bar a showpiece in the US) within Brazil, in essentially a weak Brazilian league. Who knows how he would have fared in a more competitive league. Maradona on the other hand also competed in the Spanish and Italian leagues.

Maradona good; Pelé better; George Best.

Having watched various video's of Maradona I can't see how anyone can be better. As far as I'm concerned he had everything a player in his position could have. If Pele was better, in what way was he better?

I think Pele's goal scoring record was out of this world for club teams, but it's not like Maradona had 100 attempts and scored only 2. From the Pele footage I've seen were they not different types of players? so it's difficult to make a comparison. However the skill and ability of Maradona on the football pitch appeared to be as good as a footballer can get. Time will tell if there is better :)

I'd have loved to have seen more of Pele. I've only seen his World Cup coverage.
