Hello again

Has anyone had any experience of Marangoni tyres? Im doing a little bit of research on how much tyres will cost when I get around to purchasing a 330. They seem to be well priced, and from the little info I can find, a fairly decent tyre brand.

Any experience would be great! :)

Dont budget running a 330i on Marangoni tyres. Fit decent tyres and if you can't justify that, pick a car thats more suited to whatever budget you wish to commit to running it. I dont understand why people do this - I totally get not wanting to spend a load of money running a car, but the answer is to just pick a car you are comfortable running, not run a more expensive one on the cheap.

Fair enough. I wasnt trying to budget, just asking what they were like as there isnt too much info to be found online.

Yes, they are 255/35/18 on the rear, which equates to about £180 each for a quality UHP tyre. The 18's with wider rears are disproportionately more expensive unfortunately.

Yeah they seem strangely overpriced :( Thanks for the info, gives me an idea of what to expect

As I was getting my F1 AS2s fitted to my GTi at the tyre place, a guy pulls in driving a SLK 350 (which looked very well looked after and had a private plate) and was probably a 2010 model. He tells the fitter that he has got tyres himself and wants them put on the rear. The tyres he had purchased (presumably from the internet) were Nankangs! He was about to replace CSC2s with Nankangs! I know the fitter really well and we both looked at each other and couldn't resist a snigger!

Without a doubt that SLK will be finding a ditch near Birmingham somewhere. Couldn't understand it as he had Pirellis at the front too.

It bugs me how they can justify charging nearly double for an extra inch of tyre, like you say, you can fit a set of 4 UHP on 17's for about £400 but it's amost double for 18's. They can't even blame it on being a rarer size either because 18 is quite a normal size now, if not even more common than 17's. Not that i'm going to scrimp on my tyres, as everyone says, they are the only contact between your car and the road, you want the safest you can.

What bugs me the most is how manufacturers put odd sized tyres on 'performance cars' such as 215/45/18 on the Mazda 3 & 6 MPS, why oh why didn't they spec 225/40/18 from the factory?

Aesthetics is probably a big part, they will have some designers moaning the size of the side wall is ruining their design.

Then cost, they will keep the expensive bits of the car as off the shelf as they can, so to keep the calibration accurate whilst using parts from other cars its simpler to change the tyre dimensions to keep the correct rolling radius.

Stupid really! dare say there may be a wee deal with a tyre company that brings out that specific size too.

Or maybe im just being negative :P

If you go for an SE on 17's, you can fit decent, premium UHP tyres for just over £400 a set.

a set of 17s for £400?! I struggle to get under £500

It's not even an extra inch of tyre is it, the rolling radius therefore overall diameter is the same, you just get.. well.. less sidewall.

Yes, tyre-shopper.co.uk. Cheapest source I found for 2 235/45/17's was £110 each for Eagle F1 Assymetric, fitted.

Wouldn't say they are the same, about 50mm out from each other.

probably 5mph difference between them on the speedo.

I imagine manufacturers have tolerances they are allowed on the speedo, you or i wouldn't give a hoot about.

We are talking very generally about 18 inch v 17 inch tyres, an 18 inch tyre doesn't have an extra inch of diameter over a 17 inch tyre.

I was responding to firestar's post where he was talking about 18's in both sizes.

Remember that the profile is a percentage of the width, not a measurement. The examples in Firestars post would be near as makes no odds identical in rolling radius.

As for Marangoni tyres... I have some Marangoni winters on at the moment but it is hard to give a comparison to my summer tyres on 17" wheels.
