Marangoni Tyres

On which size/car though? Tyres perform differently on different cars but I'm sure you know this anyway.

For reference, mine are 225/45/17 and 245/40/17.

I hear that the E46 Sport Coupe on 17's has been frozen in time and new tyre technology has no effect on them, hence nothing performs better than a Vredstein tyre from about 6-7 years ago.

Granted it does depend on the car, 225/40/18 on yeold passat, i'm quite sure it's a compound problem because my current ASY2's have 0 traction issues out of junctions under normal driving conditions.

U Mad Bro? They're not that old surely, didn't they come out in 2007~.

I'll try them (or whatever the version is at the time) on the next front change because I'll be able to get the best feel of them on there instead of on the rears hence why I didn't opt for them this time round.

Surely its your rears that are more likely to expose grip issues, as they are the driven wheels

I don't currently experience rear wheel traction issues so why would I change them before the fronts? Getting a new tyre on the fronts instead would give a more immediate difference on stuff I'd notice right away such as tramlining, cornering, steering responsiveness and feel of the road through it (the wheel).

I see where you're coming from though, but for me the most difference to be noticed would be from the fronts.

Personally I wouldn't mix tyres on the E46, if you are putting fresh Vreds on the back then I'd stick with Vreds on the front. The E46 doesn't respond well to mismatching tread patterns front to back.

Unfortunately that would involve ditching/selling a perfectly good set of tyres if I'm to put a complete new set of tyres because each time I've changed the rears, the fronts were changed not that long before having lasted up to 2x the life of the rears.

Would seem a bit of a waste :( I suppose it would be a difference of a few months though but I just bought new rears and the fronts still look like new so looks like the next time will be in 15-20k miles time!

Weird that.

I hear that the E39 Sport saloon has been frozen in time and that new models have no effect on it, hence nothing performs better than a E39 from about 12 years ago.

Not sure where you heard that, everyone knows the F10 is better.

Did you just pop into the thread to have a snipe or do you have some semi-relevant thoughts to add? ;)

MRK I found the CC3 to be a lot quieter on the E46 but grip to be the same as the Vreds.

Just stick to what you know, if you're happy with the Vreds then just stick to them, you have a tyre you're happy with and that's it.

If you change tyres you have the ability of going up, but remember you have the ability to go down..

See, now thats useful information. I remember seeing a load of issues years ago where the handling of the car was affected by having tyres with vastly different tread patterns front to rear. There was a thread about it on BMWLand back in about 2006ish.

What did you run? I've also had no issues with Assymetric on the rear and Directional on the front on my car.

If I remember correctly it was ...

452 front - vred rear

and then there was a point where I had

Vred front - PS2 rear

The best I had was F1s all round. That was such a nice combination for the car. If I had the E46 I would have no hesitance in going for F1v2 all around.

Could you put a percentage to the quietness compared to the Sessanta? The CS3 costs about £20 more per tyre for the fronts, I've not checked the rear but I imagine that will be quite a bit more. In 15-20k miles time the prices won't be the same though of course.

I highly doubt I will have the same car then too so may well be looking at something else entirely!

Oh I found it quieter straight away, no doubt about it. I think I had CS3 on the rear and PS2 on the front when I noticed it straightaway. I would guess 25%.

If you're not sure if you will have the same car then just put on Vreds..?

The Vreds are on :p Or will be tomorrow either way!

25% is a considerable difference in noise. They must be almost ambient as I felt the Vreds were about that same percentage quieter than the PS2. I am intrigued more than ever now!
