Marussia car crashed during testing

Horrible.
Certainly a freak accident and not really comparable to a racing incident, but will this now seal the deal on increased cockpit protection for drivers?

I was on my way to duxford to watch when I got a call from a friend telling me to go home as she had crashed the car. He didn't mention it was this bad.

Having the tail lift down made it all worse. I am finding it off though that the trucks were that close to the tent...

I don't remember caterham having the trucks that close to the cars when they were there earlier this year.

I really don't want to see closed cockpits in Formula 1. I think it will make the cars look less attractive. Like fighter jets on race tracks which would look silly. But in circumstances like these I have to admit that I can't let my own gratification take hold over someone's life. The latter is obviously a million times more important and if it means protecting drivers then so be it imo.

The closed cockpit idea has been discussed on here quite a bit. While it provides increased protection for some accidents, it brings with it its own risks.

But what would the cockpit have to be made of to withstand driving into a truck tail lift??

I think at the end of the day, this is motorsport and there are always going to be risks involved it goes with the job.

Every driver knows that everytime they get into a race car that they are putting their lives at risk.

Ooofff... that makes me cringe, look at the edge of the ramp! visor height?

Good to hear she is now in stable condition.

On the closed cockpit angle, a while ago I saw fighter jet cockpits having a metal spear fired at them at great speed and it just "bounced" off, get the angles/materials right and they could be bomb proof so to speak

Great. So they are bomb proof when your car is upside down and on fire... You can't protect against every freak accident
