*** Mass Effect 3 ***

The reason I heard it was, was because certain EA games use in-game DLC instead of external, so in mass effects case, the cerberus network.

Steam, I imagine wants to distribute DLC via it's platform and also get a share of the profit made from it, but whilst it's as it is, Steam is cut out completely, which is where the issue lies.

Well EA make it sound like they won't put their games on Steam because Valve wants to approve all DLC and patches going through its system.

As the EA mouthpiece speaks - "Steam has adopted a set of restrictive terms of service which limit how developers interact with customers to deliver patches and other downloadable content."

where in this post is this showing steam up in arms? if anything it shows EA are the ones

Ignoring your personal comment, possibly bordering on breach of the forum CoC, unless you work for EA, what possible benefit do you accrue to cluttering players' PC's up with garbage like Origin when a simple online unlock of the key code would do?

Ultimately, my choice, hopefully if enough people boycott games that enforce this type of DRM, the publishers might change their minds? I am resigned to unlocking the install code on-line, that's here to stay, but persistent copy protection and having to play via a web server is a joke - especially for the SP game.

I agree with you it's unnecessary to be forced to run Origin all the time, ME3 won't use a web browser though, that's a BF3 thing, not that there's a valid reason to dislike battlelog, people just don't like change.

But calling Origin malware just screams of overreacting, calling you a girl isn't against the forum rules :p

One off activation I could probably live with then, as I'm not interested in the MP application. Let's just hope it doesn't try downloading a 4Gb patch straight off as was the case with BF3 = 10% of my monthly bandwidth!

Do you feel the same about Steam? Just curious.

I'm not 100% edified about using Steam either but it has become virtually impossible to avoid, if you want to carry on PC gaming. An advantage of Steam is that it does act as a kind of virtual back-up and of course you can install the acoount on multiple PC's, so long as only one is in use at a time.

Back on subject, I was (am) really looking forward to ME3, so after due consideration have reinstated my pre-order.

Not getting at anybody but, why the beef with Origin?

That's right, it eats up loads of my 4/8/16GB ram sitting in the taskbar.

How does Steam know how to update a game?

It just goes about it in a similar way to Origin.

The usual greed argument comes into it but Steam probably make more cash than EA with the amount of users/sales they have.

Pot kettle and all that imo, as Gabe and co has had a moan at MS in the past for the way they handle DLC (by means of MS wanting some kind of payment)for the 360 has he not?

Considering EA owns the IP, it's up to them what/who/where/how they distribute it, if they want 100% of sales profit so be it.

The simple fact is, if we want to play any title bad enough, we have to put up with all sorts of DRM, and install all kinds of this n that rubbish, anyone care for a game of GTA IV, or Silent Hunter 5?

With the above intrusions, Origin doesn't have a look in.

Before I get grief for having a pop at Steam I'm not:

I couldn't live without it, I embraced it as I will embrace anything that stops me from having to insert a DVD to spin up and access to play a game.

Considering how bad the PC versions of ME games look, I might just get it on the 360 tbh(haven't used it in nearly a year!). DLC through Origin/Bioware store is beyond broken. I had problems with ME2, DA:O and DA2 and I really can't be arsed with their customer support again.

When Bioware took over the reigns of Warhammer online, the customer service went from bad to non-existant. Like a 5-7day response time on CSR tickets. Only other of their games I play is ME, Origin though is making me doubt it, I'm sick of having to install programs to install a program/game.

I still don't understand what Steam's beef with EA is.

It's probably because Steam tends to favor free updates and streaming content to users.

Whereas EA and Origin tends to favor crapping all over their userbase with premium DLC and forced logins.

But then again, Modern Warfare is still on steam - it's days are numbered though I imagine.

If only they were from the sales, I would have saved a fortune, more than half of them were full price, some bought on pre-purchase, some bought elsewhere cheaper than normal steam price and integrated too.

Haven't played most of the sale ones, although I think I'll only be buying in the sales from now on as I don't get to play much.

Yeah I'll definitely get it, but I'm fully expecting this to be almost completely brainless & sanitised. I'm genuinely surprised that more people don't see the addition of an 'action' mode as a problem, it's yet another step away from what created the series in the first place, hell what created the developers in the first place. Aim to attract everyone & you'll please no-one, and whatever 'extras' are added to the game always shifts focus from the core, regardless of intention.

Yes I know I don't have to play that mode, but the fact it's there means there's now a 'canon' list of decisions, and even less reason to flesh out the non-canon routes & choices.

Depends really. As this is the last of the games, the canon is still impacted by the choices made in 1 and 2. So the canon of 3 will still be variable on what happened previously.

If you are playing 3 without any previous saves, it will just employ the same logic as 2 did, with some generic canon.

Don't see it as a problem at all, having the 3 modes seems to be a perfectly acceptable way to cater for different types of gamers without them cross-impacting experiences. Obviously RPG is the way to go for anyone who has played the first 2, but some other person picking Action won't impact those doing it RPG stylee.

I don't know if people are using rose tinted glasses or biased hindsight but mass effect 1 was crippled by overly RPG elements that slowed the game down and made it a bit of a grind. Mass Effect 2 was a far better game which had RPG elements you could dip into or a straight 'I can't be bothered with that crap, manage it for me' mode which, I would say, most people used. I wouldn't like to see ME3 go any further towards straight action game though.

Slowed the game down?

There are far more RPG heavy games out there compared to ME1, it certainly wasn't crippled. IMO ME2 was too shallow in it's RPG elements and for me wasn't a better game than the first. There was no real customisation available to Shepard in ME2.

So what is the release date for Gears of Mass Effect?

I couldn't disagree more - it was about as simple as it got. A few points into your selected skill (which could be automated if you wanted) and then you chose your weapon and a single point of armour - plus a dabble in weapon mods.

IMO, playing through ME1 as I am now, your team mates in combat are the most frustrating, as they do absolutely nothing at all but run around like headless chickens or hide behind boxes.

Why is there always someone moaning about graphics in every pc game thread I go into? Seriously people, gameplay >> graphics.

Anyway, from what little I've read as I'm trying to stay unspoiled, there is much more customisation this time around. I'm really looking forward to this.
