Massive blast in Beirut

And on the flip side, it's also interesting to see some of the good stuff people come out with such as this one...

...granted there are vastly different elevation changes which would adjust the radius but it gives an indication of the scale.

E: For those that can't view this one, it's blast radius placed over London and New York to give an indication as to the scale of it for people that may not know the size of the city etc.

Getting back on topic...it's amazing (in a bad way) what people on the internet will come up with, as is proven by this single tweet...

E: For anyone wondering, it's a conspiracy nut tweet.

I mean it was clearly going to be the go to assumption in some quarters but it doesn't make much sense - despite what anyone thinks of them (and I'm certainly not an apologist for the IDF) they're not too likely to want to set off a huge explosion like that... it has been ruled out by both sides:

It quite blatantly seems like an accident, though I think there is a question over whether there is involvement of straight up corruption/incompetence or whether a certain group was involved... whether directly via some munitions stored in the port or via the ammonium nitrate itself being earmarked for or used by them...

Terrible. Sounds similar to what happened in China (a few times), huge amount of stuff is stored together (bad), not stored correctly (bad), something starts to leak, chemical fire, and that's the end result. Sounds like it was known about too which means official people didn't take safety seriously or lack of funds, corners cuts etc. Way more than 100 dead from that thing.

I just read this on the same topic on another forum.

This is really random, from a guitar forum, there is a guitar pedals maker call ThorpyFX (MBE!), the designer is an explosive expert who worked in the British Military and to quote him on his background if anyone is interested.

I'd say he is on the right lines - though from the videos it looks like the shock wave does go super sonic briefly - albeit not in the way you'd get from high explosives.

I am not sure if there is anyone on the forum is qualified enough to contradict him from seeing the same images and videos we all have.

It is fairly obvious if a shock wave goes super sonic as the effect of it arrives before the sound of the detonation - from the videos I've seen this is a bit mixed.
