Massive blast in Beirut

Indeed, he says amunition cooking off/not fireworks and that seems entirely plausible in this context.

The first close up video is far more like ammo cooking off than fireworks - the big explosion almost certainly isn't from assembled fireworks or even firework chemical bulk (though bulk might be a component).

It is fairly obvious if a shock wave goes super sonic as the effect of it arrives before the sound of the detonation - from the videos I've seen this is a bit mixed.

It’s not just that, it’a knowing what explodes and what burns and things like what colour certain chemicals gives off and observations on speed of explosion and whether it was explosive like a missile or fertiliser and the ability to not only distinguish but confidently say it is or it is not. The conclusion is not merely sound travel faster than air, it comes from the expertise with everything else that he knows.

That means anyone who has posted something that contradicts his comments, IMO either is more qualified or know more than he does in terms of classified information or merely a conspiracy theory

I wonder if we have anything stored as dodgy in this country.

You wouldn’t know until it goes bang!

It's HOW they were storing it which is dodgy. All just stuffed in a warehouse at a dock.

Some are blaming a moronic welder for accidentally setting it off. I guess they won't be questioning him though, probably in orbit around Mars by now.

I lol’d hard at that. I’m going to hell.

Storage will be slightly better though too, not quite just "chuck thousands of tonnes in to a shed and hope for the best".
No we just use that approach with our politicians. It doesn't work there either, and the results are just as catastrophic, but it takes longer to see the damage.

It it was started by a welder, so many wtf questions arise: Where was his risk assessment and work plan, who signed it off and issued the hot-works permit, and more surprisingly how did they find a welder willing to work at 5pm who didn't insist they had to clock-off at 3.30pm to beat the rush hour?

The MOD do have huge warehouses full of Ammonium Nitrate but at least they do tend to be away from populated areas if they go bang!

And split in to smaller parts in separate bunkers, all with earth mounds around them so if one goes off it won't set the rest off or release a massive shockwave.

According to more recent information the grain silos were holding large kernel cereals with minimum potential for the rapid combustion of fine particles so unlikely to be a significant factor in the explosion.

it literally knocked that cruise ship onto its side too. That is no mean feat! https://twitter.com/i/status/1291002707617157120

edit if you look closely the smaller ship that was right by the explosion is submerged and half way across the dock too.

Doesn't look like the remains of that ship here:

If it was still there that ship is gone gone as in pieces - possibly the smudge above the red circle in the second image though that is probably the wake of a ship that has come in since.

that photo is from the other side with the ships behind it and the other two out of shot to the right. Not sure what that is supposed to show.

News just said they were storing that stuff there for YEARS O_o

It has incompetence written all over it. The port was basically sitting on an unexploded nuke.

Talking about your edit - that smaller ship if it was there at the time of the explosion is just *gone* not submerged in the crater.

He means above the red circle, the two smudge lines in the water could well be the ship from the before pic. The image you linked doesn't show that area, just the crater.

E: Having said that, there are some other pics which show a ship on dry land afterwards so maybe it got moved in the blast?
