Massive Car insurance costs?

My renawal went up about £75 this year, that is being 38, with more than 10 years NCD, BUT i was shunted in the rear, so being involved in any accident will always bump your premiums.

It's all moot though, I have been with DirectLine for years because any accident me or my Wife have been involved in has been so pain free from a repair/hire car perspective that I don't think I will ever leave them!
Was shunted on a Saturday evening (was turning right into my own street) hire car delivered first thing Monday, my car towed Tuesday morning, car repaired and back on my drive the following Monday, can't really ask for more than that from an insurance company.

I ended up sticking with RIAS for the third year in a row as my renewal was cheaper than anyone on comparison sites were offering me. Still, it was a hell of a increase compared to last year. Last year was £156 fully comp with 19 years NCB. This year was £254 with 20 years NCB so a whopping £98 increase and more than I have paid for the last 10+ years. I know mine pales in comparison to others on here but a near hundred quid increase on such a low price is unprecedented. The cheapest on comparison sites was £280!!

-> Increased garage repair costs
-> Less availability of parts, leading to longer use of hire cars on claims.
-> Increased regulation requires more resources to ensure compliance
-> More people not insured - this now costs the industry ~£500m per year
-> Cars now cost more, so claim cost has increased.
-> Car insurance prices have been stagnant for about 3 years, so increases in line with inflation were due anyway.

Too add to this list - The other area pushing up insurance prices is the increased regulation on 'auto renewal' quotes.
[Insurance customers renew their insurance policy, the price charged by the insurance provider cannot be more expensive than the price that they charge to an equivalent new customer for the equivalent policy].

Previously Year 1 would be the 'cheap' loss leader price, to attract the customer to company, then the auto renew (higher) price from year 2 would be the actual cost of the cover, including some profit. Companies banking on people just accepting the 2nd year higher quote, without shopping around.

Now there is regulation on this auto renewal price - so they cannot do this 2 year higher increase. So Insurance companies will now, generally just quote the real cost of insurance from Year 1, meaning we all pay more.

Generally - it comes down to the point of we have been used to low Insurance prices for a few years and now reality is hitting !

What a joke.
£400 last year with Direct Line, renewal quote in: £1200 this year.

Compare the market, cheapest is £650...
I'm 30 with 8 years No claims, never had any accidents. Thought I was about to get to the age when car insurance gets cheap... :(

Mental.

Apparently there has been a huge increase in car thefts this year, so that might be part of it. All the keyless/wireless and internet connected toys in recent years have made them much easier to break in to.

Cracking tools have probably overtaken the encryption on some cars a few years old now.

how long before insurance companies complain they are having to increase our premiums due to a spike in uninsured drivers. I am not excusing it... but if people can't afford to insure their car then that is the obvious outcome

It wouldn't surprise me if the numbers are going up. There are no cameras where I live, and next to no police presence either. Loads of people take no notice of speed limits, and I wonder how many would stop if there was an accident.
Almost every day you hear of a hit and run on the news, and I suspect no insurance is a factor in a few of them.
Insurance is a bit of a legalised scam though really, you have to have it so they can charge what they like, and even if you have a no fault accident they'll hit you with increased premiums.

Yup no fault accidents are the biggest con. Got shunted whilst stationary at a roundabout and the cheapest premium is up by 70%

My parents - 73 and 75, their insurance for their VW Golf has increased by 63%. Even going through the car insurance guide on MSE didn’t make things cheaper.

They rang up their provider and asked what they could do. They only could knock off whatever to make the increase by 49.9%

Not looking forward doing mine in Feb/March

Mine combined for the Audi & Citroen C1 jumped 35% this year after a phone call added a small discount.

Im seeing lots of online noise that the increased repair costs to EV's is a driving factor in the general increases we're seeing but I've no idea how valid that is in reality vs online grumping but either way a huge percentage increase is never welcome.

Why should we pay for EV costs? These drivers should pay more.

Do you think how silent they are is causing the increase of accidents involving them?
I wouldn't have thought so, cars these days are generally so well soundproofed/music up that unless there's something really loud around you still won't hear it.

My bike is rather loud and people still don't notice me sometimes.
