Massive Car insurance costs?

I do feel bad for kids. We've got a couple of apprentices, both really good kids with their heads screwed on and BOTH have had insurance cancelled due to having a black box fitted. They now have to declare that they've had a policy cancelled or invalidated for the next 5 years.

I'd have lasted about 20 minutes with a black box fitted to my beast of a Hyundai Pony when I was 17 :o

Boss at work was complaining about a 73% increase on his latest renewal! I'm hoping the MX5 won't go up too much. I do 1000 miles a year in it (much less the last 3 years) and it's already teetering on the brink of justification with the Road Tax and previous years insurance.
They had the insurance cancelled because of the way they were driving that was recorded by the black box? If so, surely they would have warnings about their driving style and been told to adjust accordingly. My son got one warning because he left it with a garage to do some repairs and they took it on a spirited test drive, had to get a letter on letterhead paper to confirm he wasn't driving it at the time. Once it was on the drive for a few weeks whilst waiting on a part and the insurance co phoned him up saying he hadn't done many miles recently (most likely fishing to see if he'd disconnected it or wired it up to something else).

I believe one was due to their driving and the other was because they broke the curfew rules on when they were allowed to be on the roads. I guess there is an argument to say that it was their fault but the knock on effects are pretty huge when you have to declare that you've had insurance cancelled previously. Most companies just don't want to touch you. Personally, even now as a supposedly sensible middle aged man I'd still end up raising red flags on occasion if I had big brother monitoring my every move.

My wife had her renewal through today. £8 less than last year :D

We haven't received our multi cover renewal quote from Admiral yet, but I ran a quote on Aviva for our 2 cars in the meantime.

Aviva want £2627 for our Tesla Model Y. We paid £577 last year with Admiral.

Rather nervous now!

sounds like they will have to learn the hard way, they must have got warnings first though to change their driving style, surely it wasn't insta-cancelled?

Just had the email from Admiral this morning saying they won't renew my insurance for next year (renews on the 20th) - been with them for 10 years

Cheapest CTM quote is about £3k and thats not from a particularly reputable insurer. Direct Line won't give me a quote.

This is starting to get impossible - absolute ****take.

Makes you wonder if there's a gap in the market for a sensibly priced insurance company with selective criteria.

OTOH surely there's a tipping point where insurance becomes so expensive that people will choose to give up owning a car, at which point insurance companies will start losing money.

What car is that on ?

Just had my renewal today, up 15%, which I guess in the current climate is ok.. (f10 530d)

Unfortunately, I think the tipping point is if it becomes too expensive, some will consider not bothering with it at all as the punishment is far less than the insurance if you are caught in the first place

Or the other option where dodgy insurance companies spring up that wont actually cover anything, just give you a cheap quote so you're listed as "insured" to avoid any trouble. Pure profit for them since they'll never really have to pay out.

Macan S - was £1300 last year.

Been playing around with CTM a bit - just goes to show how much its not based around you as the driver. Removed my £11k claim from 2019 and my 3 points from '22 and it made literallly zero difference to the quoted cost.

Changed my address from London (kept in a secure underground car park) to my parents in Kent (kept on a driveway) - £1500

Mental.

EDIT:

Just run another quote - with one letter difference on my postcode (UT instead of UX). Block of flats next to us - exactly the same car park. £1000 cheaper!!!!

Mine is due up in April - My price last year was £433 the cheapest quote coming up at the moment online is just over £1400 :( Seems absolutely mad!

Got my renewal through, £650 to £1100, a 70% increase and first time since 19 paying over a £1000 for insurance. Compare the market has no better prices so I think I'll be calling some more specialist insurers to see if they can beat it, last year, one said to bite their hands off at that price so I won't be holding my breath.

Donning my rose tinted glasses for a moment... There was something to be said for chunky black plastic bumpers that could shrug off a fairly substantial knock and headlamps that didn't cost £1000 to replace.

Accident management companies and parts delays don't help matters either.

So, I have my 2015 Hyundai Ioniq insured with Hastings Premium coverage. Last year, I paid £426 for the insurance, which was much cheaper than the prices I found on most of the comparison websites. I also checked with Direct Line and AbbeyOnline, but they quoted me higher prices of £666 and £800, respectively. Today, I got in touch with Hastings to get an idea of my renewal premium, and they gave me a quote of £491. I'm pretty happy with that, so I'm gonna go ahead with the renewal.
