Massive Car insurance costs?

Aviva have just offered me My Drive on their app. It has to track your driving habits for 60 days and a few hundred miles. I read elsewhere it’s a chance to lower premiums by 20%
That's decent, Admiral is 1000 miles over 3 months. I'm not sure I'll cover it, especially if I forget to enable GPS a few times!

seems surprising inststitute for public policy - whos just investigated food companies don't have the remit to investigate insurance companies independently and say whether there is similarly proifteering ,
beyond legitimate parts(covid/brexit/ukraine)/mechanics costs - people will be stopping motoring, if there is similar increases next year,
for fleets (self-underwriting & buying-in) insurance component must be rocketting too.

Here is one if the biggest accounting and audit firms in the world.

Ours is due for renewal in January, we have one car, a 10 year old Focus.

No claims, 15 years ncb and neither of us have any points. Last year we paid £194 this year the comparison sites are giving the cheapest prices rather than direct at £427 with a much higher excess as standard. That’s a 120% increase.

I didn't realise we had thread to discuss getting bent over the barrel by insurance companies.

Mine was £560 last year with LV. The renewal was £821. I couldn't find anything cheaper with a comparison site. I also feel like insurance companies charge extra just for renewing near Christmas.

I feel your pain, my car insurance due on 23rd Dec for as long as I've been driving..... £380 to £580 this year, no changes.

I did read car theft is up 60% with 130k stolen in 2 years.

They do not. Infact having a renewal around November / December is probably the best time of year as this when a lot of the big insurers go policy chasing, actively lowering prices compared to prior months in order to hit customer aquisition targets.

It was a few years ago but I did a test. As I moved my policy start date back towards Christmas my insurance price would increase. From memory it was cheaper to have my new insurance start about 1-2 weeks from the date of purchase than to try and push it back further.

As for customer acquisition targets do they not set those targets based on the financial year rather than calendar year?

A company can set its financial year run from and to what ever dates they feel like. Most are 31Dec or 31Mar but if they wanted it to be 27July, they can. For example, an educational institution would normally use the academic year for their financial year.

It’s only individuals that has a fixed financial/tax year.

Renewal has just come through for our Kuga with LV - gone from £303 to £523 (Excess has also changed from £350 to £450).

Sad part is will probably have to suck it up, as cheapest on CompareTheMarket was £426 with actual reputable insurers being around £518 anyway :(

Edit:
1% saving going from 7 to 8 years NCD well and truly offset by the other increases :D
(5->6 years is pretty depressing on LV's table as well)

Edit Edit:
LV Have just sent through another link detailing the reasons behind price hikes:

Got my renewal price from Hastings last month; last year's price was £270, this year's was £405. I did the usual routine of running a new customer quote on their website but this time the price was identical, so clearly the change in rules preventing them from offering lower prices to new customers have fully kicked in now.

I then ran some quotes on price comparison sites and only one policy was cheaper: Miles by Churchill which requires you to adhere to the number of miles you tell them you'll do and they fit a black box/OBD device. Didn't fancy that idea at all and was ready to suck it up and pay Hastings the £405, when I saw their renewal page has a "Decline renewal price" button. Decided to click it just to see what happens, where it then asks for the price of the quote you've decided to go with instead. Typed in the Miles by Churchill price assuming they'd need to compare details and have someone call me to point out why it's not a fair comparison, but instead it instantly gave me the lower price of £310. :)

Makes me wonder how much lower it could have gone...

question, if i had a renewal quote from my current insurance and i called them up to haggle...
could they increase the quote if they find that their renewal quote was undercharging?

i paid £650 this year...next year's quote that just came through is £950
the cheapest on comparison websites is £1800

10 year NCB, no accidents, only 1 claim for windscreen

Admiral just increased mine from £550 to £800. No change in circumstances.

Searching online the cheapest I can see is £650 now from some companies I've never heard of, so I'm not too optimistic they'll come down.

Aviva want £1200. I was insured with them for around £400 a few years ago.

This is on a 2014 Focus ST.

I can't remember the exact numbers but my dad's renewal just came through something like £408->660 and looking around other reputable places are offering £380.

Not that unusual a few years ago they wanted to go from around £300 to £700, etc.

The cheapest quotes I'm getting are around 1500 but got a fault claim on my policy. Was with direct line for quite a few years but this year they wanted around a staggering 3500. I really wish it was cheaper. I feel more confident paying more with aviva over goskippy. Any thoughts?

Yes my renewal came through last month. Paid £360 leat year Renewal was £800

Did my usual search online, in the end paid £485.

I think yes they can if your details have changed.

Pretty similar here. £690 to £925 and the Meerkat is saying that's competitive. Prob not helped by the claim I just submitted!
