Mattresses - I need knowledge

I've bit the bullet and ordered the origins 1500 and the divan. Will report back at some point.
Seen it was recommended on here quite a bit and decided to take the plunge.
It was either new bed or new telly, to replace my aging 40" sony LCD... bed won!

Good deal on a mattress we have had for 2 years:

https://www.bedsareuzzz.co.uk/millbrook-brilliance-deluxe-1700-mattress-standard-double-135x190cm

Double is £488 using the code MB16 at checkout. We paid £650 for ours originally so this a great price. You can set it to firm or medium, and it had the strongest edge support of any mattress I have ever used **removed**
Do you know what the difference is between the deluxe and non deluxe versions? The specs on that site seem to be the same. Is it comfortable?

One has 2 rows of side-stitching, the other has 3. The more side stitching, the tighter the spring structure so less sagging.

Weirdly, the more expensive Deluxe is said to have 2 rows, whereas the standard has 3, surely it should be the other way around? I'll need to check my mattress when I get home as I definitely bought the deluxe.

As for comfortable, that is always subjective, but I prefer a firmer mattress and this is definitely that, it might not be for everyone.

Ours is actually in the spare room now as we moved and upgraded to a superking and got a latex topped pocket sprung as that is my favourite type of mattress.

Thanks krooton, I think they might have got them mixed up as on another site its the opposite way around for the side stitching. It seems a good price for what you get, but seems to have risen a bit since you made your post. Still cheaper than any other site I have found though.

I didn't realize what an absolute pain in the Ass watching and reading foam mattress reviews was going to be...

Just when you think you have an understanding of all it turns out that you have completely wasted your time as not only are there different revisions of the same mattress (that changes with manufacturing discretion) but the USA , EU and UK versions are completely different to each other depending on the chemicals and Fire Retardants laws.

pocket sprung are the best so i don't know why you want foam.

It's hard to ignore the amount of people that say once they have gone to Foam they would never go back to spring plus i was curious to why there is such a big price difference between Ikea and other brands like Leesa and Casper.

Sounds like butters remorse and self justification to me, I don't know anyone who agrees.

Pocket sprung, with top of your choice (latex, gel, foam, or nothing) and you are sorted.

Agreed with krooton and PS. I've read reviews after extended use of collapsed/compressed foam, dips etc. They are also far too hot. Problem is, most people probably post their review in the first week of receiving it.

While I'm a huge JR advocate; I was curious and tried a couple of the foam mattresses while waiting for the spare room one to arrive and it just felt too soft, too hot and the support wasn't there. It also had a chemical smell which even after airing for several weeks didn't go away.

JR = John Ryan right ?

A lot of companies jumped on the foam bandwagon after the success of Tempur, and now have a marketing led business built around being able to ship it in a box for trial or return. Tempur started by supplying hospitals, so they can't be that bad, but the difference in materials and foam density between a Tempur and other foam mattresses is huge. They are very different beasts.

Sorry, yes John Ryan. I've two screens, one writing a report with loads of acronyms and then this one. All the mattresses in my house are John Ryan now; guests always comment on how great a night sleep they had.

maybe we need a long term survey to see if the Simba/eve disrupter buyers remain happy one-5 years in .. but I don't think they have been that proliferate in this thread,
(not sure if this thread started before simba/eve were born?)
Avg uk price now payed for a mattress now £5-600, skewed, I suspect, by Simba/eve products and their perpetual deals/which award TV/social-media advertising, ...
if you want something thats going to last 10years does a £1/week seem the appropriate price versus a phone contract or smartphone, alcohol, take-aways .....
you get what you pay for. .. I'm more like 15years into a pocket sprung which was more like £1k ..
although the Tempur stuff lasts -folks are 10+ years into theirs, they're too warm for me when I try (Tempur are ackowledging that themselves) and, not least, a high end price.

I don't know if the green/carbon credentials of simba/eve have been explored, if their lifespan is a fraction of their siblings ... WWGD (what would GodGreta do)

So are you saying the people in the last 44 pages that love their foam and memory foam mattresses are deluded?

foam is crap.

put it this way those people spending £150 on a mattress have never likely ever had a decent pcoket spring mattress.

why? because they are at least 6 times the price.

it's a bit like asking someone who drinks cheap cider what their thoughts are on a £150 bottle of whiskey. they are going to say their 50p can of cider is amazing.

I have a dreams mattress (unsure of exact model as currently not at home) but it is hotter than a volcano when I sleep on it! I think it has a foam topper but its absolutely ridiculous, Im quite a hot person generally but its nuts how hot I get! Im going to be getting a new kingsize bed in the new year so will use the dreams double in the spare room but whats the "coolest" mattress type you can get?

Not everyone will have the same levels of comfort or ability to sleep, I personally always liked a firm surface, even as a little kid I always hated too soft or too springy beds, I slept on a futon for years and could probably sleep on carpet with a duvet on top no worries.

I don't like most box springs - I used to travel for work and slept on many 4 star quality box springs and rarely ever got a good night's sleep as they're too springy and bouncy. When my girlfriend got a new mattress recently we tried every single one in store including the top end £1000+ expensive box springs and when lying together only a couple of them didn't bounce like crazy when I did a roll over test.

We ended up getting the very firmest box spring they had as she doesn't want foam, which I admit is a actually decent solid box spring that I can sleep on.

I much prefer solid mattresses including foam, but I agree memory foam is ridiculously hot and almost defeats the object of using it at all. I got a £500 or so foam mattress a few years back after using a futon, at first it's the most the most comfortable thing ever, then you wake up boiling hot feeling like you've been absorbed by your mattress.

I flipped that thing over that very night and sleep on the hard foam side and have done ever since - one of the most comfortable and cool mattresses I've slept on and I'm using it upside down. Not everyone is the same, gotta go with works best for you.

I got the Millbrooke Brilliance mattress a few days ago and its really comfy. Went for a medium as its on a solid slatted base, so firm would have been super firm.

Would it be a good idea to get a sheet of ply or something to put over the slats? Or would that stop the mattress breathing? I can just see the slats digging into the new filling.

Edit: Anyone tried one of these? Want something to protect the new mattress, but don't want a super thick topper. This with a sheet over it seems like it would be super comfy...

I got an Emma mattress recently (largely down to convenience, admittedly), having slept on a good pocket sprung mattress most of my life.

The Emma isn't as nice as a good pocket sprung, but I'm sleeping well on it and having far fewer issues with heat than I expected, and my back feels good. The acid test will be in the summer, though - I can imagine waking up in puddles of sweat.

I've bought it knowing that I probably won't be using it for more than 5 years or so, and it's a bit of a stop-gap, but at some point I'll be looking to buy a new flat with room for a super king, so buying an expensive pocket sprung mattress simply didn't seem worth it. It was £450, and if in two years I decide it's grim and I have to bin it (or move it to the guest room), I can live with that.
