Mattresses - I need knowledge

I need a small double but I can’t really afford to drop a grand on a mattress. Can you get anything decent for the £400-£500 mark? I’m not a fan of memory foam mattresses.

Try the John Ryan outlet. Stock comes in few and far between but I got an Origins Reflex 1000 (Double) for £548 which is a 20% discount. Was as good as new.

Must admit I can't get over how much comfier and better I am sleeping on the Emma mattress after getting rid of the Silent Night one.

Had a few nights on the old bed / mattress the other week and it was horrific
Just goes to show how subjective it is.
The best mattress we ever owned was a cheap 12" deep High density memory foam from ebay.
Binned it when we moved (temp accommodation) Thinking we'll just get another from Ebay.
Nope
Can't find the same one.
We've Had 2 other "memory" foam ones since. Neither seemed to retain their memory for long... The latest one. An Emma is now more like a piece of foam.
I've been put off the JR ones due to some bad reviews But may revisit.
Its a decent chunk of change for it to develop sink spots in a year or two.
Would be so much better if Super kingsize was actually square. As you can flip, spin etc

it's a mine field...

I bought a pocket sprung (1400 springs) silent night for about 300 squids (reduced on sale) and i quite like it, but i've since put a 5cm memory foam topper on it for an additional £120, and i'm undecided whether i like the foam topper or not.

One thing I have realised is pillows are key.. i'm a side sleeper generally, and foam pilows are not good for me.

If they were a different shape, they may be amazing. But I also found them to be no use.
Even half a pillow higher would be good, but using normal pillows squished into a neck support + lower for head seems best.

Which is fine.
Until you wake up X time later and do it again, and again...

Ergo mattresses have been good for us.
Best I ever had has gone out of business.
Ergoflex are not good for first 2 months but are then very good. Seem to need a while to loosen up.

No dips, comfy. But to get a decent memory foam you need to spend over £300.
I hate how most do not mention the density of the foam.

Is there any sort of general buying guide or handy tips for at least narrowing down mattress options? Like minimum spring count, types/technologies to generally avoid, how to genuinely tell if one will last, that type of thing? It's such a frustrating thing to try to buy. I have literally no idea what I'm looking for. I mean I settle on a firmness and size obviously, but then I go to several stores and try a bunch out, and they all feel too similar to make any sort of informed decision, with sometimes hundreds of £s in it between the options. It just feels like an absolute gamble whether or not you end up with one you end up liking..

You could go insane trying to decide on mattress by reading about them on the internet.

Both times I completely gave up and just dedicated a day to having a look at them in stores, latest arrived recently and been using it just over a week and it's great.

Yep, you need to try them which is annoying when many are now online exclusives.

Well JR aren’t wrong with that they say about pillow tops which for the purpose of this post, are not detachable from the main mattress.

You can’t flip them so they wear more quickly and the pillow top itself will compact over time and you’ll probably end up with lumps in the middle where you don’t sleep.

If you want a pillow top, I’d buy a separate topper. You can remove it, flip it, shake out the fillings etc and clean it!

Just bought my 5th John Ryan mattress...

Been checking regularly and managed to get 20% off a clearance one. It's for a rental anyway so care little about any transport cuffs!

What were the 'imperfections' like for that clearance one?

Just dropped over 3.5k on a John Ryan mattress (Artisan Naturals) and a sprung frame (superking size).

Currently I just use a cheap frame and a 300 quid double mattress so imagine it'll be a fair jump in quality.

How have you been finding it? Was it a zip-link you bought?

I prefer pocket sprung mattress. But good quality ones.
All this memory foam crap that everyone seems to be banging on about just gives me back ache.

And they are too hot in summer.

A good quality firm sprung mattress is lovely... I have a silent night one, a cheap one with only 1400 springs but you can get better ones with more springs.

Our Simba, which was bought in 2017, is out of shape on the top. Wondering whether to attempt a warranty claim, or just buy another mattress.

According to this the dip tolerance would have to be 70mm to satisfy a claim under the ten year guarantee - https://simbasleep.com/pages/guarantee-mattress

I posted my experience earlier in this thread, hopefully it helps - https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/mattresses-i-need-knowledge.18359778/post-35666817
Pretty much the same experience although they didn’t ask for the drop measurement.

Sent the pics as requested and they’ve just asked me for my latest address for the replacement.

Really can’t argue with their customer service on this!
