May be in trouble at work

its the managers fault, either has to come down on lazy employees or hire more staff/extend shift times.
You scratch mine ill scratch yours is all very good, but you'll find in minimum wage retail jobs its more of a case of managers taking advantage of staff etc.
Iv had some bad jobs really, but at my last place we always got our work done early, because the managers made sure they had enough staff, aload of us were agency brought in to make sure work was done. We were always finished atleast 20minutes early, that was good management, the manager was a nob but only because he whipped us and we didnt get to slack off, we had breaks every 2-3hours(12 and a half hour shifts)
If the work wasnt done by end of shift it would mean a certain sports retailer may have stores in trouble since they wouldnt have stock that was in-demand, basically the extra £7 an hour for a few more staff, or paying everyone till later than the job needed meant this never happened.

Established stores have big enough turn overs to give people the extra hours pay, or hire another staff to be working at same time, its just they choose not to to make more profit at the current staffs expense.

Don't be afraid of the head nob. The worst he can do is fire you...its not like he can legally sexually abuse you or something. And there are plenty more jobs in retail at this time of year.

Unless the OP has previous history, he cannot get fired over what happened a few days ago. If he does, then TK Maxx should get ready for a tricky employment tribunal.

Right, so I suppose you would find it extremely fulfilling to work in TK Maxx, picking up clothes off the floor and placing items in hangars after customers have left a mess? Generally, the people who are doing this job are doing it for the money and NOT for the job satisfaction.

You didnt answer my question - have you ever worked in retail at the bottom rung of the ladder?

my apologies i forgot to answer your question

every job i have had all 3 of them has been on the bottom rung and all in retail.

Toys R Us
Costco
Ikea (present job)

i know how messy tk maxx gets and its very close to ikea in terms of customers and how untidy it can get.

I'm not there for the satisfaction for the money BUT that does not mean that i dont get satisfaction from it!

Its a good example because here we are not looking at the time itself, but the principle. Ive had to exaggerate the example in order to get he point across.

you can exaggerate but that is an over exaggeration! 10 minutes compared to 4 and a half hours?! the principle doesnt apply to this!

In that case you are in the minority. Most people, especially students, who do the bottom-of-the-rung retail jobs do it purely for the money and nothing else. Their main priority is to enjoy their student years and to get good grades. Retail work is a means to an end. If they finish work at 2000hrs and they leave the shop in a mess, most of them wont lose any sleep over it whatsoever.

Pay related performance.

I'd question the locking in.

False imprisonment??!

Fire risk?

Do you have union representation?

And which firm is it you work for?

He works for TK Maxx. As yet, from what he has said, he hasnt been accused of anything, so no need for unions to get involved. In any case, he works for a retail shop so I dont think union assistance will be easy to get.

Hi all. So I had work today - 5 till 9. I went in scared with my mp3 player (built in mic) in my pocket and decided I'd better make the first move. Put out a loudspeaker message for him, he called back and I asked him if he wanted to see me now or later (this was 5 mins before shift). He said he'd contact me in about half an hour and put me on the worst job in the store. Unsuprising really. But I didn't mind, it made for a nice change. He didn't get back to me. I don't know if he was busy or not. I got my head down. And signed out at 9.

After the nerves settled while I was waiting for him to contact me, I was actually quite dissapointed that he didnt.

I'm working tomorrow night too (wednesday) and he probably will be. So if he still wants to talk, I'm sure he'll do it then. I'll let you know.

Sunama, thanks for defending me against Deep, you've raised all the arguments I would have given him. He's still talking about the "OMG it was only 15 minutes" thing though isn't he?

To put your mind at ease: if it was very serious, ie. he wanted to take some sort of disciplinary action, he would've spoken to you today as it would be a high priority. If I were you, I would keep quiet and get on with things as if nothing has happened. Chances are, he will forget as what happened is no big deal. Dont be surprised though if you get all the nasty jobs for a few weeks and watch your back as supervisors/managers will be watching your every move. The minute you make the wrong move, expect something to be made of it. I expect this to continue for a few weeks, after which, your incident will be old news.

With regards to "Deep": some people have a different attitude to part time work, ie. you must work hard, even when treated badly, but different people will always have different attitudes. Its life. Deep is entitled to his opinion. Nothing wrong with that.

sounds like hes a chicken mate :) nothin to worry about, trying to spite you by putting you on the worst job and is most likely going to be very unprofessional and immature from now on towards you, make sure you put him in his place and know your rights :) Can see you having some fun winding him up at work from now on, you might become a bit of a legend in the place and the others may follow suite and grow a pair.
Love workplace rebellions!

My god 8 pages!?? It makes me laugh when people say "you failed at life" and other such comments.
If its only 15 mins, then surely the company can afford to pay you for it, simple as!
To reiterate;
1. Its your right to stop working after allotted hours
2. You were given very little warning. shame on them
3. You were locked in  big shame on them...and illegal
4. Manager is an eejit for not organising workloads effectively
5. Totally understandable that you won't work extra when you are already at slave labour values
6. Good on you for standing up for yourself, but don't cave and get scared of a talking to....stand your ground again mate :)

I also agree that worthwhile jobs do warrant extra unpaid work. Dead-end, stop-gap jobs that exploit you to hell and back aren't!!

Personally i believe the ones that say "you should have done the extra 15mins", "life is like that blah blah!" are pussies and will get shoved around alll their lives!

I get well paid for what i do, but receive no overtime. However pride in my work is what had me working from 8am-2am the other month for no extra pay. It doesn't happen often and i know the work is appreciated. THAT can be a bigger incentive than money. The OP's job clearly isn't like that, so he did right imho.

Curio....words almost fail me!
Never met a store 'supervisor' that wasn't 2 dimensional, in character and forward thinking! I suppose you'll be opening tins next!

That may very well be the end of it. But again, like many others have said, I don't feel he has much of a case against you. Not even for a verbal warning.

If you do get disciplined, I could always pop by the store (I'm a regular at the Maxx in Dundee) and compliment on your excellent service/skills directly to your manager! ;) :p

(doors are locked so we couldnt get out)

My area had a devastating house fire recently 2 adults and 5 children perished. No one locked these victims in there home to die it was a terrible accident. In light of this if someone manager are not attempted to lock me in a workplace someone would be scraping them up off the floor, who did she think she was GOD ALMIGHTY!

I work on the tills and have done for the past year so if you buy stuff there, chances are I'll have seen you :D And if you're a real regular, I'll probably recognise you. You should look out for me :p I wear a name badge.

Since moving to Forfar I don't go as often as I used too, but I have been there the last two Saturdays. Exciting stuff I know!

I'd need a name to look for, other than the obvious of course!
