Mazda Rx-8 What to look for when buying ??

Thing is at 27 with a fair chunk of no claims under my belt I seriously thought this would be my next car choice, then insurances prices went mental across the board and I'm not sure now whether this is the way forward or not anymore.

depends on your budget, there are equally amusing cars for equivalent cash, although I'll admit looks wise the s2000 wins hands down (thinking mx5, z4, z3m etc..)

Z4 is probably the better option as I think I want more of a cruiser next, but I won't really know what I can afford until after I get a mortgage which should hopefully be in the next 6 months or so.

I bought a non turbo supra that is both slower, older and less equipped than an RX8 with equal running costs. Does this make me a moron for buying one?

It's not a BMW or Vtec Honda, so that immediately puts you in the firing line on this forum ;)

That's hardly the topic of conversation is it, the point people are making is why the RX8 is cheap vs it's same aged competitors, it's simply because hardly anyone wants to take on the liability.

Your choice to buy a 1996 or whatever supra has nothing to do with this, you've bought into something totally different.

Fair point, my point is that the Supra has all the disadvantages (and more) than the RX8 yet is similarly priced yet no one slated it! Just confuses me slightly.

The Supra is probably more economical than the RX8. What people misinterpret with the RX8 is they see people say 20mpg and think 'I get 20mpg from mine, thats not so bad?'. I mean, I get 20mpg from my 335i.

The difference is that if I take my 335i on a longer drive it does 35mpg and I'd imagine your Supra does 30ish.

The RX8 still does 20mpg.

such a poorly thought out sweeping statement, reading just this thread will prove it wrong on so many levels - let alone the rest of the motors forum

let me guess, fox also forces BMW's down people's throats at every given opportunity :p

For me the the S2000 is flawed only by it's insurance group rating. :(

Yeh.... I looked yesterday out of interest and did some comparisons of a lot of the cars on here.
I'm a relatively new driver in the scheme of things to a lot of people here, The RX8 looks like it would cost about the same as my ST24 to insure at around £900 where I live, an extra £200 would do for a 350z GT. However the cheapest quote on a S2000 was 2k! The majority of the S2000 quotes were a few hundred % more expensive again

Along with looking at insurance I browsed around for various prices of alternatives people have suggested in here.
350z looks a nice alternative at the high end of my budget I think I could stretch too at this point in my life, but it it gets me a car I don't think is quite as pretty, less seats, higher mileage and an older car. However I'll definitely give one a look if I end up deciding against an RX8.

Nothing else really ticks the same boxes for me at the moment :p I just like the niche character the RX8 has!

Given that he is complaining that he *isnt* in the firing line, you've made yourself look a bit daft with that silly bandwagoning comment :p

LOL, don't I feel silly now :)

What's happened to this forum? - you can't make a tongue in cheek comment any more without being pulled up on it! :D

No more attempts at humour I promise.

The thing is with the Supra is that it's a fairly rare, interesting piece of 90s semi-exotica. Much like an RX7.
The RX8 doesn't fall in to that category.

Well most people can post nearly 30mpg on an average consumption with a mixture of driving so that is probably roughly 33-40% better than the average most people will get on a RX8.

So you can probably save £1000 there based on current petrol prices and average yearly mileage. Mine has had £200 in servicing costs in that time and I am fortunate to be on the same set of tyres I got with it originally. I can imagine a RX8 owned for the same period of 19 months would cost a lot more to maintain than that of my car. The engine in my car the M54 has built a reputation on reliability and very rarely has there been cases where it has gone wrong. So it may be far fetched to say they would work out about the same but with the risk factor of the engine failure you cant be far off.

The M54B30 was on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list through 2001-2003.

Applications:

2000-2005 E46 330i/330xi
2000-2006 E46 330Ci
2000-2003 E39 530i
2000-2002 E36 Z3 3.0i
2003-2005 E60 530i
2003-2005 E85 Z4 3.0i
2004-2006 E83 X3 3.0i
2001-2006 E53 X5 3.0i

My friend had to pay on two occasions (£300 x2) to have the car repaired due to flooding it as it wouldn’t start a problem which is common with the RX8. Admittedly he didn’t know this was an issue the first time round and so learnt from his mistake and was much more careful and unfortunately couldn’t help the second time as his sister was driving and she was unaware too.

You have to be making that up. Its as simple as remove plugs, foot to the floor on the accerlerator and crank for 10 seconds, wait 20s and repeat, do it 3 or 4 times, next stick some 2 stroke in the plug hole for both chambers and crank again, add more 2 stroke, now refit the plugs. Chances are the car will now start if not repeat, never needed to do it more than twice.

You can also tow the car in 2nd for a bit, but this isnt as good for the cat.

In fairness that does sound like something a garage would charge the unknowing £300 for ^^
