Okay how do you guys get so filthy stinking rich?

I am being attacked by Scotland almost every turn and my army is getting smaller. I am also regularly getting attacked by France. The toad sucking pigs will attack me, get a beating, then ask for a truce. Then a few turns later they attack again. Just lost Rennes to them as I haven't any money for new units :(

The Pope thing just doesn't work. I am almost full favour with the Pope and no one else is higher other than people on the map I havent met yet. France doesn't lose any favour or anything :(

SiriusB

As soon as my campaign starts I look where my main towns are and which are behind the front lines. The town at the front I stick all my barracks etc. in and on all the rest behind the lines I make roads, markets and anything else that makes money. I usually just stick the free upkeep units from walls in them as they don't get attacked.

As for the Pope, just keep pumping out churches and priests and he'll love you forever - especially when the Pope is from your faction :)

I don't think thats really the point he and I were making. The pope penalises me for attacking a catholic faction, but doesn't penalise the AI catholic factions for doing the same. Quite the opposite actually, they attack me out of the blue, I whoop there rear, and my favor drops because of it and I get told to cease hostilities or my favor will drop more, and they keep attacking. :(

Its quite annoying.

I've been allied with the Papal States faction for nearly my entire game and only had a couple of cease attacking for 7 turns missions. The warning box for those says you will be excommunicated even if you just take a reputation hit though.

Master guilds give a bonus across the entire kingdom, my master assassins guild gives them all 2 subterfuge to start with for example. Patch and unpacker this week hopefully :).

YOU got the mission to cease hostilities, not them. That's the only explanation I can think of :p

The Pope DOES penalise the AI catholic factions as well - but it happens behind the scenes. Don't forget it's not always an instant thing - and what you see on the screen happens at the END of the AI turn. For example, you can't see what the AI diplomats are doing. I'd bet there's a huddle of them around Rome - and I bet they are bribing the papal states. It does happen, just as you can do it. If you can do something in the game then that generally applies to the AI as well. It's not quite a stupid as some people make out. I've had my arse kicked several times now even on Medium/medium.

I thought it'd be that myself, so I did the exact same thing you suggested the second time I played the game. Took the northen french rebel provinces, Wales, Dublin and Inverness then went on the Antinoch crusade and started conquering north Africa. After awhile France and Scotland started attacking, had full favor with the pope at the time and I started bribing the stack in the palpal states, which I was allied with. France or Scotland couldn't have had more money than me as Scotland financal power was "Bankrupt" and France was "Meagre". Yet my favor kept dropping and dropping the more they attacked me.

Thought it might have been my churches not being up to scratch, but all but 2 towns had the best churches available to them.

I dunno if i'm doing something wrong or the game is bugged. Hopefully the patch will be out soon. :p

well i think having the armys on huge is a bit too much for my computer, its fine most of them but during seiges with 3000+ men on the screen it slows to a crawl lol

and how have people got on with the experience system, for a start i noticed when armys are on huge your units gain experience much slower, but is for instance a level 7 longbow man better than a level 1 yeoman for instance, is there any other benefits to having an elite unit ? because stat wise there doesnt seem to be ?

Bear in mind that some factions automatically lose favour with the Pope faster - the HRE is a good example - they lose favour very, very quickly compared to anyone else (you can see the faction settings inside the campaign files).

I've had many factions suddenly stop attacking me for no apparent reason....and then start again three turns later and get excommunicated the next turn.

Perhaps other people are experiencing bugs in the diplomacy, but it seems that the more I play the Pope (as in play for his affection, not play as the Papal States), the better it seems to be working. I still maintain that the best way to get favour with the Pope (and maintain it), is to build priests and send them off to any Orthodox, Islamic or Heretic strong areas and just leave them there. You'll also get lots of Cardinals and eventually, the Pope himself will be from your faction.

That's good advice. Train as many priests as possible early on - and prepare for the long haul. Patience pays off in this game.

Am i missing something

Hows do you guys get over 8 units in an army, by of some of the screen shots I seen - it would seem you can?

You can have up to ten different types of unit in your battle roster - including the General unit. If you want more than 10 then you need to use reinforcements. I think this is what you mean?

Right I see, thanks for the answer.

One more question, how do you give money to the pope.
I can do it to other faction with the diplomats.
Cannot see where or how for the pope, I even sent a diplomat dude to look for him.
Cannot see the option to give money to the pope in any of the faction standing screens areas.
I swear if I read the manual once more ill bin it.

Pope = Papal States faction, capital in Rome. Just give them money as normal in diplomacy by gifting them it. 1000 gold = +1 reputation, works for me :).

Send a diplomat to Rome and give him money the same way you do anyone else. The Pope and his armies (Papal States) tend not to move too far away from Rome (unless someone panels them and they end up moving).

You beat me :)

I gave the Papal States a couple of regions in Northern Europe that I took on crusades and didn't want to hold, but they haven't been very active up there either except for diplomats. At least you can gift factions to the Senate-equivalent without them being refused.

I seriously hate the Papal States. They just kill off my Generals for not having enough Piety! One time they killed atleast 1 General per turn until I had none left, seriously annoyed me.

Here's a pretty conclusive list of bugs that are being addressed apparently. (swiped from the dot com)

---------GENERAL FIXES---------

Artificial Intelligence:

Battle map)
Fix slow-motion bug
Fix AI sometimes freezing up in piazza
Fix AI poor reaction to horse-archer fire
Fix AI *sometimes* not using opened gates
Fix AI rushing all of it's units into gaps in broken walls (causes extreme lag)
Fix AI piling more than 1 unit per ladder or siege tower in sieges (causes extreme lag)
Fix AI rushing its Trebuchets across the bridge in Bridge battles
Fix AI not reacting to arrow fire -- entire armies can be destroyed without the AI ever reacting.
Fix AI abandoning walls during a siege -- sometimes the AI will abandon the walls of it's city and fall back to the town center, even though the AI could feasibly defend from the walls
Fix AI not reacting to flanking maneuvers -- currently they simply do not react
Fix AI sometimes placing units in inaccessible areas -- on top of mountains, for example.

Campaign Map)
Fix AI randomly blockading and unblockading ports
Fix AI intelligence when auto-handling tax rates -- AI boosts taxes too High too often
Fix AI occasionally sending single unit armies across the landscape -- Generals are often endangered in these situations

Player-Controlled Units:

General)
Fix slow-motion bug
Fix cavalry sometimes not charging
Fix cavalry sometimes not pursuing units correctly
Fix cavalry sometimes using melee weapons instead of lances during initial charge
Fix ranged troops not always firing on the unit you order them to fire upon
Fix foot units sometimes not charging -- i130.photobucket.com/albu...creen4.jpg
Fix foot units sometimes not pursuing fleeing enemies
Fix units sometimes not sending all of their soldiers into melee --
pictures:
i130.photobucket.com/albu...creen3.jpg
i130.photobucket.com/albu...screen.jpg
in other words: only the first 10-12 soldiers fight while the rest spread out behind the unit and mill around; more soldiers COULD be fighting, but they don't.
Fix certain infantry not fighting up close with cavalry -- such as Billmen and Dismounted English Knights
Fix the issue with Missile Units losing their charge bonus -- they lose their charge bonus because they don't switch to melee weapons when the charge is issued

Siege specific)
Fix units not always climbing siege towers -- some units will remain on the ground
Fix units not always completely climbing ladders -- some soldiers will remain on the ground
Fix other troublesome siege pathfinding problems -- trouble with roads, placing units in cities, etc.
Fix the wall/tower/gateway capture names -- the names do not change making it hard for the player to tell what has been captured

Diplomacy:

Fix the Pope -- Pope currently does not know who to correctly excommunicate if a war erupts between two Christian factions. Many times the Pope will excommunicate the defender for simply protecting his lands.
Fix a Diplomacy bug -- currently if you are at war with 2 or more factions you can't make peace while you share a land border with them
Fix computer automatically maintaining hostile relations after conquering 7 regions -- after acquiring 7 regions, all relations with other factions 'stick' at hostile

Miscellaneous Fixes:

Battles)
Fix 2d Sprites -- they're too bright!
Fix the replay issue -- current replays don't depict the battle that was actually fought
Fix towers in Sieges -- in this case, if a tower is captured by the enemy, it can be recaptured by simply placing units near the tower on ground level.
Fix Danes speaking Russian -- they should at least speak German?
Fix Trebuchets being mobile -- either reduce the speed drastically, or make them immobile
Fix spies opening ALL of the gates in a city -- a spy should only feasibly be able to open one gate
Fix siege equipment-catching-on-fire issue -- currently the AI can easily set players' siege equipment on fire, but it takes many more volleys from the player to set the AI’s siege equipment on fire. This makes it unfair towards the player.
Fix crossbowmen 'lobbing' shots into the air -- crossbows can only fire in a relatively straight line
Fix heavily-armored units sounding like peasants -- there is no clanking noise from metal
Fix gunpowder foot units taking too long to reform and fire -- possibly make it so the units can fire without having every soldier in-line?
Fix city gates in Byzantine sieges randomly opening for no particular reason -- there are no spies in city
Fix Armenian Cavalry calling themselves "Light Cavalry" when in fact the tooltip claims they are "Heavy Cavalry"
Fix the General's voice being heard even after he is killed
Fix Mortars not firing at units in-range when put on fire-at-will

Buildings)
Fix retrain queue in citadels -- currently, when trying to retrain units they do not under-go any noticeable change.
Fix Huge Cathedral giving no benefit -- should at least give +2 piety?
Fix units not getting upgraded when they should -- example: the Jousting Building does not actually give Knights the upgrade it says they should receive. Same goes for the Woodsman Guild with archers.

Characters)
Fix agents losing 3-4 points on unsuccessful missions -- maybe reduce to 1-2?
Fix sons of Kings not all being properly named Prince -- only the first son is titled Prince
Fix princess's pictures on family tree becoming 'generic' after a few generations
Fix merchant names recycling character names -- example, a merchant called William the Conqueror

Campaign Map)
Fix Load\Save bug -- when loading a saved game, the AI breaks off its sieges
Teach AI to use more priests -- currently it is easy for the player to manipulate and control the Pope mid\late game because the computer does not produce enough priests.
Fix missions -- sometimes mission don't make sense or can get messed up; such as missions that have the player eliminate the faction who gave the mission
Fix Mongol script -- Mongols sometimes stall production and build massive amounts of naval units
Fix free mercenaries -- sometimes mercenaries can be bought without having their cost deducted from the player's money
Fix Family List not always showing the correct family members for an AI faction -- example: playing as English and having Milan's family list only show 2 members, both having died many years ago. In other words, family list not being correctly updated
Fix receiving a mission from the Council of Nobles to marry your princess to your own prince but when attempted the "there are no unmarried generals" message pops up.
Fix the auto-merge button bug ("m" key) -- sometimes it doesn’t work

Crusades)
Fix crusaders deserting at high sea every two turns
Fix Crusades not completing the path laid out by players -- they will follow the path for 1 turn and then stop.
Fix Crusades that have their family member killed en-route -- these Crusades continue to remain Active, but the Pope does not realize this. Therefore the Pope does not call anymore crusades, and the player cannot recruit anymore crusade units.
Fix Crusades that fail because someone else beat them to the target -- these Crusades should disband or become rebels, not stand around doing nothing

I wouldn't count on that, its just a community compiled list of things that should be fixed, from the same thread (http://p223.ezboard.com/fshoguntotalwarfrm55.showMessage?topicID=7493.topic):

Here is a list of bugs, fixes, and additions that the TW community has found and suggested for MTW2.

I thought the patch should be in final testing, so the list of issues that are being fixed is already fixed and we'll have to take what we're given.

Some of those listed are silly, deserting at sea or not completing movement could be any number of legit reasons aswell as a bug.
