MegaUpload has been shut down

Glad someone else has picked up on this. I posted earlier asking how the US seem to think they have some sort of global jurisdiction, and no-one has enlightened me on why they're being allowed to assume the role of "World Police". I'm hoping that some countries will still have the balls to tell them to do one.

I hope there are protests in NZ if they try to extradite these people. They should be tried under NZ law and in a NZ court FFS (if indeed, they are suspected of wrongdoing and there is evidence to support a case!) - either that or sent back to their country of origin, not extradited to the US!

It's not as if the US isn't unpopular enough around the world without kicking this off as well. Alienate the population of your allies as well as your enemies, nice work!

Nz has a new copyright law which was written by the US government. The US is blackmailing countries to adopt new laws and extradite citizens.

MU gone?

/care

I don't care so much for the site either. I've never used it, but I'm extremely worried when:

a) The company is based in Hong Kong.
b) The accused are not US Citizens (as far as I can see).
c) They were arrested in NZ at the request of US authorities.
d) They will likely be facing extradition trial.

I can't be the only one thinking that this is royally messed up and rather sinister.

What are Anom doing? Are they pulling down websites to prove a point?

No, Anon doesn't need to prove a point, the very fact that it got so many people together within 15 minutes is enough of a point to give.

The rest is as usual just collateral and "lulz".

sorry for possibly getting the wrong end of the stick here, but isnt this the equivalent of a criminal gang using the big yellow storage company to hold a bunch of stolen goods, the police finding out, then shutting down big yellow storage without letting anyone get their stuff back

Yes.

They're turning the hosts into scapegoats because they can't be bothered to find those who may have uploaded illegal content

All filesharing sites need to die a death, really. They are all used for copyright infringement, and if you have legitimate reasons to share large files, you normally have your own servers or your organisation provides their own servers.

Why do we condone piracy and view them as "the good guys" in this fight?

No one condones piracy, we do however condone liberty.

Perhaps you want a world where there's a camera in your bedroom and if you move when you aren't supposed to, you get instantly arrested?

Hmm. Hmm.

We already know how the US deals with their laws, they make them so vague that just about anythings possible with them, the terrorist deportation act?

Totally fine to use on anyone.

All private vehicles need to die a death, really. They are all used for various crimes, and if you have legitimate reasons to travel large distances, you can normally use public transport or you own company provides their own vbehicles.

It's hardly the point. I'm not gonna argue that MU was entirely clean, but nobody knows the real % of infringing material. Just because filesharing sites CAN be used for illegal purposes doesn't mean they ALL need to die a death.

And a large part of the backlash here isn't in support of copyright infringement (which I agree has to stop), it's in protest at the USA unjustifiably throwing their weight around globally and trying to be the internet police.

So i can see a long chopping block here

Megaupload
Rapidshare
Storage.to
4shared
mediafire
dropbox ( probably! )
youtube ( already highly censored and videos getting blocked by labels all time! )
soundcloud

Etc..

Cant understand why anyone thinks they govern the internet, Yeah there loosing money but most decent people will tell you if you support the artist/developer/writer etc.. go out and buy it! I aint fussed if i download afew songs nd films cos ill probably go out nd buy it in cd form for the car eventually. or ill want it on blu-ray cos rips aint the same usually

I do wonder if any other sites like MU will be next.

Although reading what was posted earlier about MU being listed as a rogue site, and the list of charges they are facing, I can't imagine that all the other sites are 'rogue' sites.

I heard on R1 this morning they were saying it was due to the possibility they had paying members and then earnt massive revenue from adverts on the site.

Interesting times ahead, that is for sure.

They aren't stupid y'know (i.e. the "authorities"). They will observe behaviour patterns of internet users and continue to analyse where people will move to next. They probably have a long-term strategy in place which they are in the middle of implementing.

I personally find it quite worrying the extent that the US can apply laws that will be applied to people outside the US - a bit like the so called good guys at Valve (they are not btw) and their attempted entrapment of that German kid. Good job the German police were smart enough to arrest the kid. I am not condoning piracy I am condemning the way the US corporations are using their power to be overly punitive to whomever across the world in unequal extradition treaties.
