MegaUpload has been shut down

The UK government has shut down the US for the copyright infringement known as 'American English'. Her Majesty's government will be in touch shortly :D:D

If only US authorities were so eager to enforce US law abroad for real crimes. Thousands underage kids making Levi's knockoffs in some a-hole of Asia, real pirates robbing ships and taking people hostage, that's just fine, but a lame, "wait 60 seconds" hosting site where some primary school kids dropshare Lil Wayne album , that's a crime worth going international for.
Oh. And MegaUploads? Seriously? That's what you go for? In the whole chain of suppliers filming or stealing material for release groups, ftp sites and courier distribution, the secondary distributions, the bots, usenets, filesharers, you go for MegaUpload management? That's equivalent of arresting shareholders of a company that manufacture blankets that some random Asian dude use to display his dodgy DVDs on a parking lot at Asdas.

There are some proper dreamers in this thread lol.. This is nothing but a bad thing and as discussed its sickening that the US can arrest foreign nationals over this.

Can they, though? Where are such powers written into any of these countries laws or constitutions? I get the feeling that the likes of NZ have rolled over for one reason or another. There must be a compelling reason or argument for them to do so.

Have the US threatened sanctions or something to anyone who doesn't cooperate? I've never been one for conspiracy theory but there has to be something in place that makes cooperation/bending over worth their while.

Nice to see America living up to the usual bully-boy stereotype.

They mostly hate the west because they are told to hate the west, not for any good reasons.

To be fair, the western culture of consumerism, corporate greed, celebrity and vanity is the complete antithesis to many of their beliefs and way of life so I can understand why they'd disapprove strongly of the west (maybe hate is a bit strong though).

Downloading a file != Lost sale

This is still a fiogure that seems to be relied on a lot that if a specific file has xxx amount of downlaods then they have lost xxx sales. not in the slightest imho, yes I've downlaoded things before and then went on to buy them, yes I've downloaded things before and ended up not buying them, I have however also downlaoded things got a small part in and decided they were absolute garbage and deleted them.

Put that in a cinema, 15mins into a movie and you decide its utter dross, go out ask for a refund, what'll happen? Same with games and taking them back (Game's no questions asked returns policy was amazing but too many ended up using it as a rental service lol).

Now when people insist on charging £40 for a new release game or £16 to see a movie, does no-one see that as a bit off?

Things like DRM and the complete lack of demos have damaged the gaming industry to a degree where the prices are artificially high, I mean come on, digi distribution was all about reliability, convenience and cost reduction... Where has the cost reduction gone? Digitally distributed games are commonly the same price as, if not more (sometimes a by a lot), as a full retail packed game on which extra has to be spent mastering/manufacturing/printing/boxing/shipping. Even things such as monthly subscriptions/timecards can be gotten cheaper even that the longest subsriptions for games direct from the pubilshers, how is this possible if not only greed?

I'm probably not alone in thinking that a large proportion of the "pirated" (and I use that term in the loosest possible sense) material is just so people can see a TV show quicker than it airs in the UK, wether it be on a week later in the UK or a few months, does it really matter? Why don't they do something about it? a New premium channel on sky/cable? a streaming service? £x per month

I've tried Lovefilms attempt at streaming however and found it crap, terrible quality, bad sound, horrendous selection. I Bet a "pirate" stream of some dude in the cinema with a camcorder (do they still do that lol) would be better quality.

And for those of you claiming to never have downloaded anything, pull the other one :p

Piracy has been around for a long time and imho always will be, the guise changes from time to time but its still there. Even back when we had floppy disc and casette based games consoles, console piracy was there.

It's going to be interesting what happens with this whole SOPA,IPA thingy especially when hacking groups are striking back, wether rightly or wrongly, wonder if its gonna spiral into a new dystopian version of the internet, after all these are only the first steps.

What effects will it have on the likes of us and surely the ISP's?
Will they allow you BB packages where you can only view certain types of information? Ony use it at specific times? Replace teh behavioural tracking with full on keylogger/recording everythign you do?

I agree with many in here that this will be the first of many, which is a shame because I use these sites from time to time.

You have to wonder, if we all allow this to happen what will be the next step? It will probably end in the total loss of privacy and freedom of speech but who knows how long it will take to get to that stage.

Let's face, during the 90's (when I first started using the internet) the only real way to obtain pirated material was through difficult methods (newsgroups/IRC), that not a wide range of people knew about.

Now you have torrents/sites like MU etc, and it's a simple process of clicking a link(few links) on a website and you're done.

All this will do if they push it more and rid the web of sites like this, is push it back underground again.

Ahhh the days of pooling together a group of mates to get several files each via dial-up! Crikey, that was so much more effort than it was worth. There were some really dodgy FServes on IRC as well. Jesus.

I don't do any downloading anymore as I generally find a cheaper, legal way of getting what I want through connected friends or work (MS Home Usage Policy, for example)!

Glad it's gone and can't wait for the rest of the crappy sites to follow. Hopefully they will then get round to the newsgroups etc should free up plenty of bandwidth for the rest of us and speed up the internet in general.

Sick of all the moaning about freedom of the www we had our chance to create a nice friendly caring sharing online world and we blew it the greed of the end user has made internet censorship inevitable.

The greed of the end user? The greed of the right holders more like.

We haven't had any opportunity to create such a community. The dinosaurs are still stuck in the past, and wont embrace technology.

Speed up the internet in general? What are you on about?
