MegaUpload has been shut down

YouTube is completely different. You won't see top movies to download on YT because YT will take them down, this was probably not the case with MegaUpload.

I have seen (and admittedly, watched) a few full length films on Youtube over the years. Some of them had been up for years at that point anyway. Both Youtube and MegaUpload work in exactly the same way in that they do respond to requests to take down 'pirated' material, they don't go all vigilante and start searching and taking them down of their own accord - can you imagine just how much effort that would take?

You can pirate via e-mail, but it's a poor method, it's hard to build a community where people can just download large files on the fly.

And no to the rest, they aren't going to stop making USB devices, if however people started selling USB devices with pirated material on them, they would stop that.
theres always going to be a service when theres a need.
i remember when napster died and mainstream piracy with it for a few days

The way I see this is as follows....

Years ago, we had napster. Eventually it got taken down

Then, we had new technology in Morpheus and kazaa, then bit torrent......

Reality is, it will just provoke another change.

Megaupload, Rapidshare and all the other similar websites can go to hell. They are utterly useless, provide a ridiculously slow download for free users and I absolutley hate waiting 30/60 seconds to be able to click the download link and then possibly be forced to enter a captcha code I can't read.

File Planet can go with it.

And when they take down a website, 5 more will spring up somewhere else.

So if SOPA hasn't gone through then how did they do it...

kd

SOPA is being able to shut down any website they deem as having copywrited material, isn't it? Which could be a song on a video, an image from a game, a stream of a game etc.

Where-as this was shut down solely on the grounds of piracy which they're allowed to do, I think. I'm sure there's been a few websites which stream movies/tv series shut down before due to piracy.

You were doing it wrong ;);)

Cant imagine sites like this been kept down long and to be honest i'm waiting for government sites to be taken down in retaliation.

I've never used MegaUpload but I assume it works like other upload sites, where there is essentially no search? If so content is easily hidden. With YouTube the content is open and easy to detect.

Indeed, AudioGalaxy came after Napster. However MegaUpload is not in the same category as USB drives or YouTube.

What? Downloading? They were utterly useless compared to usenet and torrent which is what I rely on.

Gabe Newell is right, it's all about service. If companies provided a better service then there wouldn't be any need for piracy. I have about 100gigs worth of music on my hard drive but I haven't touched it in months because I now subscribe to Spotify Premium. A legal way of listening to music. Netflix has the potential to be great aswell and Steam everyone knows about although it isn't brilliant for new titles.

I usually get awesome speeds from megaupload.

Welcome to the Internet :p

They will be the last to go but really expect them to go as well.

The internet will be come a corporate giant. We can only hope that Europe which is TBH a very liberal continent protects it's citizens' rights when it comes to the might of the US.

Google, owner of youtube is a megacorp as well you know.
