Memory Prices hit all time bottom!!

You better buy fast if you wanna take advantage of these prices!

Apparently the reason for the price crash is because Samsung and a bunch of others swapped a bunch of their production of NAND memory over to DRAM but they have announced they are changing some of it back because NAND prices skyrocketed. (quoted from some dude in Kazakstan)

I just ordered my 2gb of Ballistix !

Hi there

This is correct some have had huge price increases overnight, but whether the prices hold at these higher levels, drop back down or continue rising is unknown at present.

What is known is prices are so cheap at the moment it is good advise to buy now as if they do drop further it will be a very small amount, but if they do indeed start going back up then they will go up a lot and quite possibly double in price, so now is a good time to buy memory. :)

Gibbo, are the OCZ flex XLC modules likely to drop? I fancied them when 2gb of fairly ordinary ddr2 was £120 and these were £160+ but double the price of comparable ram is crazy for some fancy heatspreaders.

Gibbo, are these heatspreaders really worth £60? Or do OCZ not want to support this niche product?

I deal in sandisk where I work and I can confirm what dampcar said.. the flash market vs ddr market is a bit mental at the moment, some suppliers are putting flash back up after about a 30% cost price drop since the start of the year.

this is so tempting too, i plan to go for a conroe rig in the next month or two, if say i upgrade in around june time, do you reckon i should buy RAM now also?

but first i have to sell my old system ...

How long are they likely to stay like this?

Most of the summer I'd say. But the dollar is very weak, there is a recession coming and I definitely the real smell bargains in June and July :D

Are the Ballistix 5300, 6400 and 8500 basically the same kits with a different SPD programmed?

It does look that way. There will be some elsement of speed binning but my gut feel is that they all start of being 8500's and fail on one thing or another. If not enough fail, then PC8500 chips become PC6400 or PC5300. After that it's a case of how good is you luck?

June, July you say? so can i take the risk and wait till June or July? I rather buy everything in one go, plus i'll probably have a bit more income at that time...

All shopkeepers hate the "Double J's" because people don't go shopping when the sun shines. If you buy now - you risk paying too much. If you wait, you risk paying more. In general, I never feel any great risk about advising people to wait and see because prices on IT kit always come down or the power goes up for the same price.

yeah... i mean im not in any desperate hurry, but the price drops on memory is quite shocking, i remember how much i paid for my kit back then... i think i will wait a little longer for now....

I hope so... hehe... I'm so tempted by the RAM prices but again, I need to flog my existing rig to get the new one. I'm hoping there will be more 4GB kits by June or July and that the prices won't be too much??

The pricing is obscene, I forked out around £140 for my OcUK Value 2 x 1GB in December, now it's 50% cheaper!!
I think it's time to go up to 4GB in preparation for a Vista upgrade...

Not true for all companies. According to Gartner Dataquest,, Samsung are not switching production as they are in danger of losing the top spot of DRAM supplier to Hynix.

Although NAND flash is likely to be more profitable in the second half of this year, Norwood said Samsung has no plans to switch production to this potential cash cow.

HI there

That does not apply to the memory market.

For example last year there was a period where memory was very cheap and then in March time it rose rapidly and modules were more or less double in price.

Fact is the memory manufacturers can increase price at any time as demand will never die off as system integrators will still be building and selling PC's.

If memory all of a sudden goes short in the next couple of weeks then prices will hike, irrelevant of the time of year. Seen it all to many times in the years I've been doing this now. :)

Well, the great thing about this is it only takes 12-14 weeks to see who's right. ;)
