I don't know how many Mercedes and AMG owners there are on these forums but I can't see an owners/info thread kicking about so thought I'd start one - the BMW, RenaultSport and others have been quite useful for owners and people looking to buy.

I've been lurking on a couple of MB forums before I bought mine for research but found there wasn't much talk of them on here besides the odd thread.

Mine is a MY2006 CLS55 AMG. First MB I've owned myself, although my dad had a C320 CDI a few years back which I used to drive fairly regularly.

Also, anyone able to offer any suggestions as to what the best route for servicing would be for me? A decent specialist or main dealer? I expect usual pros and cons apply but any recommendations would be good.

That looks awesome. Older ones really do stand out - always catch my eye when I see one.

Yup and as far as experience days go it was superb. You really get to "drive" them, although their track is pretty small so you can't really hit autobahn speeds. Still masses of fun though. The skid pan was hilarious as well. I had quite an audience for that!

It was the 6.2L V8 yes, but they have ~520bhp AFAIK. It was mental.

The newer ones are turbocharged aren't they?

Ah yes, my bad! Would love to give something like that go!
 
Can anyone tell me anything about the CL65 circa 2006? 6.0 612bhp Bi Turbo V12.

Reading around are fairly reliable but the internet suggests that not many places (including Merc) know them well enough to fault find/diagnose in the event that something went wrong so it could end up costing a kidney and first born to fix.
 
Just had a Service A done on the CLS.

Oil+Filter+Flush
Air Filters
Pollen Filter
Replacement Ball Joint

Some other minor bits and checks on all the plugs and other fluids, can't remember everything the invoice said. Was around £500.

Also got a full set of Conti Sport Contact 5 all round and alignment checked.

Hoping that should see me set for a fair while!
 
Seen a few of the new CLS's around now but never been in one in personally so I wonder how they compare to the previous gen. There's a new model CLS63 AMG that I see around every so often and it looks tasty!
 
Repaired the driver side window regulator this afternoon.

Had a horrible crunching/grinding noise when trying to put the window down mid week last week. The motor was working but nothing moved much. I did a bit of reading around and it seems to be the regulator that falls apart over time. Apparently fairly common!

Got a repair kit for about £30 and spent a couple of hours stripping it all back and then reassembling the door, it's good as new again.

New regulator would have been about £200+ from Mercedes and 1-2 hours of labour so quite pleased with that :)
 
Few things done over the last few weeks!

Replaced the front passenger side window regulator last week! Managed it in a far quicker time than it took to do the driver side now that I knew what I was doing :p should have guessed it would go not long after the drivers one did.

Also picked up a STAR kit recently and diagnosed and replaced a faulty rear parking sensor for the grand total of £10 (the sensor, not the STAR!) :)

Had the center box replaced with an X-Pipe and the secondary cats out for a bit more of that V8 growl and burble. Sounds like a slightly angrier C63 now ;)
 
Thought I'd share in case anyone was interested! Didn't take too many pictures as I got too engrossed in the job :p

Performed quite a major upgrade to the car last weekend – updating the entire infotainment system to the latest version of Comand available to the W219 CLS during its production run.

Being an earlier MY, my car came with NTG1 Comand, DVD based Navigation and the additional options of Harman Kardon Audio, Analog/Digital TV Tuner, Bluetooth and Phone pre-wire.

The intended upgrade would see me with the updated NTG2.5 system which came on very late production runs of the W219 (I believe 2008/2009). It introduced hard drive based navigation, full postcode search, 3D maps, updated voice control system, SD card reader and entirely updated UI and continued integration with the steering wheel controls and instrument cluster display.

This project involved installing:
• New NTG2.5 Headunit
• New wring loom and adaptations to existing wiring
• New Main Harman Kardon Amplifier
• New Subwoofer Amplifier

It also involved removing:
• Old NTG1 Headunit
• Old Audio Gateway/Amplifier
• Old Navigation Processor/DVD Drive
• Old CD Changer
• Old TV Tuner
• Old Bluetooth and Phone modules

In these cars, all the audio is carried over a MOST fiber optic loop so everything pre-existing on the loop would be redundant and needed to be removed. The new headunit contains the navigation processor and maps, phone control, Bluetooth etc but this also means that because everything was originally connected in the boot (GPS antenna, Bluetooth antenna, radio antenna, microphone) the cables needed to be extended, modified and routed up to the front of the car.

I was in a particularly awkward position because of the Harman Kardon system – without this, the upgrade is a lot simpler as the headunit takes over the role of amplifier from the old Audio Gateway. With Harman Kardon, the additional amplifiers are required to make things work properly with the existing speakers and the fiber optic loop connection needs to be made between the new headunit and the main HK amplifier.

I did a lot of research beforehand and eventually found all the part numbers I needed and set about buying the bits. Evntually a clear weekend came up and I decided to take the car apart on the drive.

Started with removing the CD Changer in the center console - the flip up hidden panel it sits behind can no longer be controlled by the car when you change to NTG2.5 (without additional messing about – it’s on my list of things to do). It needs to be removed with the AGW still connected to the car so the panel is operational and reconnected to close it before continuing.

The headunit was then removed fairly easily and unplugged from the rear.

Now the time consuming bit. I needed to remove most of the trim and carpet running down the passenger side of the car from the centre console past the passenger footwell, down the kick panels at both front and rear doors, the base of the B pillar and the rear seat base and side. Managed to get away with not removing the front seat…

Once all the trim was removed, you are able to see the plastic cable duct that runs the entire length of the car and the route the loom takes going from front to rear through to the boot. I ran the new loom in the same ducting, connected all the headunit connectors (quad lock block and 3x FAKRA) to one end and left the other end dangling in the boot for now. There is a microphone extension cable that needs to be plugged in about half way up the rear wheel arch section of the cable duct.

Next was ripping apart the boot trim: carpet, side panel, rear panel and storage compartments. This gave access to the cage where the other modules live. It’s quite delicate working in this area because of the proximity to the rear SAM but it’s doable if you’re careful. The Navigation Drive and TV Tuner come out of the cage and the old Audio Gateway/HK Amplifier is actually located on a bracket between the inner and outer shell of the car body. There’s also a plastic clam shell type affair at back of the boot which contains the phone/Bluetooth module – that needs to be disconnected too.

Once they’re all removed, the wiring loom adapter etc can be pulled through and routed down to the correct position. I managed to re-use the existing mounting bracket/cage and bolts to secure the new main HK amplifier in the same position and used the cage to mount the subwoofer amplifier. There were some connector and wiring modifications to do due to slightly different pin-outs but it’s just plug and play with the FAKRA extensions.

I wired the rear amplifier loom permanent live and ground near the battery in the boot – just used an empty fuse location. Did similar for the headunit live and ground at the front fuse box (this was actually a bit annoying since the fuse box location has been shifted to the driver side on RHD cars whereas on LHD, it’s also on the passenger side which makes life much easier when wiring things up).

Few multimeter checks and powered on after making sure the fibre optic loop had no breaks (much of it is unused so the couplers that exist where the rest of the equipment used to be can be used to, for example, close up the gap where the CD Changer used to connect). The fibre cable is actually quite stuff and you need to be careful when re-routing it so as not to scratch the polished lens ends or bend it too sharply or it’ll break.

Planned for the next free weekend:

Reversing Camera - I already have the parts for the reversing camera which is enabled by Comand when the car is put into reverse. This is a dedicated video FAKRA input on the rear of the headunit for which I ran the cable at the same time as the main install.

Media Interface – Parts waiting for the media interface installation into the glove box – this is another connection to the fibre optic loop that adds an interface for AUX, iPod and USB disks that can be controlled by Comand.

Quite an experience doing it all myself - also quite scary standing back and looking at the car in pieces! The key thing was taking my time doing it all and planning it from finding parts and part numbers right through to what order to do things in.

:) thanks. It took most of the day Saturday and half of Sunday. Spent the rest of Sunday cleaning it :p

It was pretty daunting at first but it did give me a massive appreciation for how the system works - I've learnt a lot and feel much more confident with most things to do with the Comand system now.

I did forget to mention - there wasn't anything to do to coding-wise either - it accepted the new hardware and all worked straight away. I hooked up my STAR diag anyway to check but as far as I can tell you have to force it to view the car as a later MY than it is to see NTG2.5 and perform any coding.

Might be necessary to add options in the future like TV, DAB, Media Interface etc if they aren't already enabled in the headunit.

To think I still haven't managed to figure out how to copy music files off USB et al into the mysteriously non-present Music Register in my CLS :(

I haven't played about with copying anything to the HDD music register yet - it's meant to hold some CDDB info isn't it?

I know its meant to be possible to 'rip' from CDs - not sure about USB or SD though!
 
I had a 'B' service on the CLS and used BMERC in Barnet. Also used them for servicing on my E46. They do a free collect/drop off etc if you are reasonably local.

I've also used Prestige Performance in the past when I had the E46.

Both are decent.

On a slightly different note, I changed the front brake discs and pads on the CLS last weekend. The old ones were definitely due replacement as the previous owner had left the car standing for a fair while and the corrosion had caused significant damage to the inner side of the discs.

Went for Pagid stuff and the 360mm discs are not light at 15KG each!

Discs ~£60 each
Front Pads ~£70
Wear Sensor ~£5

Not bad for a 55 AMG compared to other cars really!

Thanks. How much more cheaper were Prestige Performance in comparison to Mercedes? PP don't want to give me a quote over email or phone, I've given them the breakdown of work Mercedes would be doing.

From what I remember, it was a reasonable amount cheaper that the dealer (BMW) but that was only as far as servicing is concerned at the hourly rate.

I remember them being a bit funny about using non-genuine parts for repairs though - when my alternator died, they would only supply and fit a genuine BMW part at £500++ whereas other garages quoted on equivalent/refurb as I'd have expected on an alternator and it ended up costing me a lot, lot less because I went elsewhere.

Strange they won't quote over the phone for a service though. :confused:
 
So, I did the spark plugs (all 16 of them!) last weekend. They didn't look too bad at all really for 70k miles. Changed them outside the service schedule (I think its 100k) and put in some OEM equivalent NGK ILFR6A. Runs a little smoother (possibly placebo!) but it reports a slight increase in mpg for a journey I am used to doing so I call it a win.

Unfortunately, I did notice the inevitable valve cover and breather cover oil leaks starting on both banks of cylinders (common issue on the M113 and M112 engines). Starting to make its way down into the spark plug recesses and makes everything around the ignition coil packs really untidy :( So I cleaned it all up temporarily and ordered the full set of replacement gaskets, breather hoses and sealant- which is next weekend's task!

I also, swapped out the recently changed Pagid front pads for genuine Mercedes ones - the Pagid ones squealed horribly at low speeds and low braking levels - it was just not acceptable. Seems to be a common thing with these (unsure whether it's something specific with these calipers and pads but the OEM ones are happily squeal free!)
 
How long did it take you? I have the same job to do on my C55 when I get home. I'm sure its the same plug.

Took me about 4.5-5 hours in total (but I did spend a fair bit of that cleaning up the oil spray that had gathered in the recesses on the valve covers and nearby bits!)

I think the book time is 3-4 hours - the most awkward plug was the driver side rear (cyl 4 iirc) as space gets a bit tight.

If its the M113K engine on your C55, it'll be the same plug. 3588 is the type code for the NGK ones I used :)

Interesting. Seems like they're both compatible but application changed at some point. Not sure what other differences there are between the 2 types.

Out of interest, what year is your C55?
 
As I'd hoped, I got round to replacing the valve cover gaskets and re-sealed the breather expansion tanks this weekend :) took the opportunity to clean everything up, paint a few bits and freshen up the engine bay. Few pics of some 55K goodness if anyone is interested!

Freshened up the supercharger with the same silver as the valve covers and did the surge tanks black with polished lettering. Cant see much of the valve covers when the engine covers and intakes are on though! Possible excuse to get a new intake :p
