Mercedes Benz and AMG Owners

It's been dry on the road every time I've driven it since and it doesn't invoke any involvement from the TC but I suspect it will be a different story in the wet...!

Maybe an LSD on the cards to help put the power down at some point in the future.

Is £430 a bit steep for secondary cat and mid silencer removal and an xpipe put in their place? Only paid £300 to do this at infinity exhausts, but EMP Performance, which is much more convenient, seems a lot more expensive at £430!

I had the exact same work done on the CLS at EMP (secondary cat and mid silencer removal with a new x-pipe). Just dug out the invoice from about a year ago to check and it was £400 :)

Were you pleased with the work? Neatly done?

Might try to negotiate a little :)

Yeah, it was a good job and turned it around pretty quickly too. I got the bits they removed back too and sold them on so you could make a little back from that if you can be bothered!

I'm rethinking my exhaust setup at the moment so will probably end up back there at some point. Definitely negotiate!

Xpipe installed, secdonary cats and silencer removed. I am really pleased having just gone a spirited drive :D

In comfort mode with flaps closed, can't notice a difference (which is what I wanted). Flaps open in sport mode, oh boy, such a throaty roar on it.

Nice result - bet that sounds great now - looks like a good job too!

My SLK55 is going to Mercedes Watford hopefully this week to fix one of the exhaust flaps that is stuck (I guess it is meant to be even louder!).

What to test drive on the day? A45, new SLC (although probably not the 43) or an E63. Decisions decisions :)

How did you know/realise it was stuck? Curious as to whether that sort of thing has any diagnostic reporting.

Can anyone talk to me about the new A Class? It's a segment of the car market that I have literally never looked at before but looking to replace the OH car with one and they seem reasonably well built.

Look at 180 petrol engines which I belive are the Nissan made 1.6T?

Also, as if they don't come with DAB as standard :/

So I had my first issue with the Airmatic system last week. Thought it was going to be an expensive one but thankfully a reasonably simple one fix (this time!).

Got the (non-red) message on the dash with the picture of a car and an 'up arrow' with text "Visit Workshop". Car seemed to drive absolutely fine and didn't appear to droop on any of the corners or front vs rear.

Got it on STAR and did a compressor test which only managed to reach 10bar (requires 14 to pass). My first thought was the compressor had started to give out as apparently this is quite common but without the sound of engine/exhaust going and the compressor running I heard a loud-ish hissing from the rear passenger wheel well.

Bit more investigation revealed a cracked air line to the strut - bit of a bugger to get at and it needed a slotted socket to remove and re-seal but managed it without too much bother. Hardest bit was getting it back in!

Reading around the issue while waiting for the sockets to turn up, the compressor failing seems to be very common. I wonder how many of those were due to overworking because of a leak elsewhere though rather than outright failure. It was my biggest concern along the relay sticking issue. In fact, as soon as I had the message pop up, I got home and didn't drive the car till I'd sorted it.

Fortunately it wasn't the strut itself (or any part of the air line that would have been even harder to get to!)

Yeah i would imagine the failures are mainly due to leaks, people dont notice them and let the pump over run for months if not years on end. The pump then obviously finally gives up. Happened on my old S-Class.

On that front i am kind of glad that i have had ABC instead on my last couple of self levelling mercs. Ive had a valve block issue on my current one, but at least with ABC you get a noticeable hydraulic leak rather than air escaping unnoticed.

Good point... a visible leak is always easier to troubleshoot. Before I got the CLS I toyed with the idea of a CL but I was always a bit put off by the silly high pressures in the ABC systems. They seemed to be more problematic than Airmatic and I got the impression that they fail more 'catastrophically' in comparison - based purely on reading around various forums, mind. The reality may be different - how have you found yours to live with?

Interesting, thanks :) I had visions of high pressure hydraulic fluid spurting everywhere and making a real mess running the pump dry or something!

Won't be so quick to dismiss it then if something I'm interesting in moving to happens to have it.

^^Must admit that does look a little out of place when you're used to seeing the widescreen there.

Not the best picture but speaking of the dash design - the new S Coupe with the widescreen and digital dials is lush...

Also, finally picked up our new A180 Sport yesterday. Its a Premium Plus so quite a few toys and specced a couple of other options too. Seems well put together and it's good to see the full spec and colour combo together finally! I was quite impressed with the service at the dealer too - a lot better than my more local ones.

Highlight of the day was getting to poke around in the new E63 AMG S while waiting around. 612hp ... :o

Ugh so more Airmatic fun and games! I got the 'Visit Workshop' message again so stuck it on STAR and went through the tests. Couldn't hear any hissing leaks at all from anywhere - checked all wheel areas/struts, reservoir and pump location.

It's pretty intermittent though and sometimes it gets up to the 14bar threshold and sometimes it doesn't which is leading me to think it's the pump on the way out. I have a repair kit for it but before I start ripping the wheel arch apart, any other suggestions? :)

That's a very nice spec! Got almost the same colour combo in the A class and it looks great.

I also thought the driver aid pack was a bit on the steep side - seems to be about the same price across the model ranges as an option but it was quite tempting because, well, toys!

Assuming it's a factory order - what's the lead time on them these days?

I've had secondary cats and center resonator removed - replaced with an X-pipe. I do notice the increased volume at cruising speeds but it's not droney - overall, just a bit louder and more V8 noise throughout the rev range. A bit raspier at the top end and deeper idle.
