Mercedes Benz and AMG Owners

Ah I see. The 63 also has the floating disk setup. Not sure whether the PP was a thing on all 55k engined cars but seems like the brake setup is obviously different regardless! The CLS/E 55K has 8 pot fronts and 4 pot rears - I'd have guessed they would have been a common part.

This is something I'd like to know, I've restored headlights twice and both times they started to haze again come summer. I did consider clear coating then with lacquer at one point, that'd sort it.

Well I did mine a couple of weekends ago and used a spray on clear coat UV lacquer but the finish wasn't what I expected (it was a bit hazy and not really smooth) so I ended up taking it off again. Maybe i just didn't apply it properly :p

If you're avoiding the earlier models to be free from SBC then the only other thing that could develop problems and cost a bit more to repair is the Airmatic system (pump or struts mainly). I think it was optional on the E350 so depends on spec.

Can anything be done to improve the 7g tronic gearbox at all?
I'm going to give it a fluid change and service for added smoothness but is there anything to be done to add a bit of speed or responsiveness?

I believe there is a remap available for the transmission unit software which speeds up shift times, responsiveness and behavior etc but I've never driven a car with it so don't know how it compares to stock or whether it is even worth it for road use. Probably worth speaking to someone like Eurocharged.

Had a bit of a vibration at speed which turned out to be the driver side front control arm bush being pretty badly worn. Along with a bit of play in one of the top joints, I decided to order some bits and this lot turned up yesterday:

Hoping it'll freshen/tighten up the front end considerably!

I was going to post this a while ago but I just never got around to it! Had the opportunity to get an extended drive around in a 65 plate C63 S AMG. And it is a stunning machine. Usual disclaimer applies about rushed iPotato pictures and video scattered through this wall of text!

I'm not entirely sure on the figures - I'm sure someone can correct me if I'm wrong! This is the 4.0 V8 Bi-Turbo AMG 'S' version producing ~510bhp against the regular C63 AMG (which kicks out about the same as my W219 CLS55 at 476bhp stock).

I was a bit wary of the fact that they'd dropped the engine size even further - I love the 5.5 Bi Turbo in the E63/CLS63 (yet to drive one in anger) and was really hoping this would give a bit of an insight into what the bigger (older) brother could offer - early days yet but the CLS63 is on the shortlist for my next car in a few years time.

Obligatory under the bonnet shot of the snails

First impressions are that it is quite a big car from the outside - it has a few subtle styling changes that set it apart from the regular C class which I think work quite well (vents, bodywork lines etc). Nothing OTT - no massive spoilers or anything. Inside, it is logically laid out and doesn't seem big from the drivers seat.

Retained the usual AMG big brakes

Of course, the quad exhausts - the single best thing about this car is, without a doubt, the sound it makes. It is incredible. It has the ability to be refined in 'normal' mode but slip the settings into sport or sport+ and the exhaust flaps open and all hell is unleashed. It growls and barks like a monster! Lovely rumble on acceleration and doesn't drone or feel too loud at all. That might be a different story from outside the car, however judging by the attention the car got with all the pops and bangs on the overrun :D

Speaking of settings, there are many adjustments to be made to the way the car drives - both the sound and the handling. There's electronic control for the suspension for sure (dunno if it has an LSD but there's a Race mode setting - unfortunately I only found this towards the end of the test drive so could try it out :()

The interior is decently made - nothing rattled and creaked (as you'd expect!) but there was a lot of plastic to be seen - compared to my CLS55 which has leather EVERYWHERE, it was a bit different. The instrument cluster and infotainment/COMAND is very well integrated and easy to use.

Lots of chrome and AMG branding to be seen

One thing I did like was the HUD (I'd not driven a a car that had one before). It was unobtrusive and quite useful actually. The car told me about speed limit changes as I was driving - not sure if this is linked to the Navigation or whether this is active road sign reading. (Excuse the poor choice of location for the picture...I just happened to have pulled up at a random lay by!)

The parking system was also very impressive (though, anything is better than the light bars and beeps the older cars have!). A set of cameras around the car provide a 360 degree aerial view in real time of the car and surroundings to assist with parking - its really quite impressive!

It was a blast to drive - surprisingly chuckable and handled very well (albeit a bit bumpy and poorer roads) and the acceleration was excellent. However, it didn't 'feel' as quick as I expected it to be. It was very fast, undeniably, but I really don't think it'd outpace my CLS55 - even given the slight power difference. I also preferred the interior of my CLS..it just seems a bit...nicer. I could live with all that though given the noise it makes when you turn the exhaust to Sport+ and put your foot to the floor.

Ummm i should not be allowed near the internet :P Just bought a e55amg . Flying to Scotland Thursday to collect it . 1 owner . service every 6 months via main dealer . Meticulous owner who would swap all 4 tyres when rears were low .. Can wait !

Awesome - is that a W211? Seconded for pics :)

Very nice. Still prefer the 6.2 litre C63 though.

Will you be buying this?

I agree - the 6.2 is a lovely engine and one of the last of a dying breed as a NA V8.

The new one is a brilliant car but I don't think it's something I could see myself in right now. I think I'd prefer the slightly older 5.5 CLS63 or something else a little different like a Mas GT. Besides, I'm quite happy with my W219 CLS55 so I think it'll be a little while before that goes anywhere!

Finally got all the bits together for my DIY air intake mod and spent the evening hacking away, measuring up and fitting.

Sounds so good :D

Need to get hold of some more stainless pipework for the front ducting tubes as they are still a bit restrictive (and it'll look better than the black plastic!)

They look like fun :)

Fitting them yourself?

I'm hoping so!

I would have fitted them myself but since I'm going to have both remaps done, I figured I may as well have the lot fitted at the same time since they'd have the front bumper off to fit the new pump and heat exchanger and the belt off to fit the SC pulley!

Apparently there's a delay with the production with the heat exchangers with the manufacturer...I placed my order at the beginning of March!

Car spent the day at Eurocharged yesterday having various bits fitted along with a service and gearbox oil and seal change.

New, bigger heat exchanger and new cooling system pump:

New idler pulley set and belt wrap with smaller supercharger pulley:
88p0gtR.jpg

And a remap of the ECU and TCU.

Now gives me around 550bhp and 650ft-lb (880Nm) right across the rev range (keeps that peak torque from around 2k rpm when the SC clutch engages all the way to 5k so you can really feel it pull hard while driving 'normally'). As this are, it could have put out more tuned for peak figures but it wouldn't have been as wide a power band so I'm happier with it like this for drivability. Adding higher flowing exhaust manifold could potentially see me shift that up by another 20-30bhp with the same power delivery but I think it would make the car a lot louder and I'm not keen on that so I need to consider options. It's fairly un-obnoxious as it is (cold starts and WOT being exceptions!)

The TCU map also sped up gear changes significantly so it feels like a completely different car now.

Now, it's not quite the 920bhp that ianh's RS6 is putting out :p but certainly puts a grin on my face :D

edit; Also, thought it would be worth mentioning that I was really pleased with the guys at EC - would recommend them highly. Kept me updated at every stage of the process and I found the quality of work to be excellent.
