Mercedes Benz and AMG Owners

I'll soon find out (collecting tomorrow) - but can anyone shed light on MercedesMe/remote app connectivity I could expect on a 2018 E43? I see the car has 3G built in - unclear what this actually means. Can I do remote heat/cool? The video seemed to elude to a ... fairly rudimentary implementation (the last heat/cool settings come on with remote start).

Also, how much it costs?

Thanks

Didn't cost me anything as my car is almost new, but when I registered and paired the car all available options were selected and enabled, but remote heat/cool, was not an available option. (petrol c300)

The app connectivity is free and will be till the car is 3 years old (you should have everything enabled) or you should get a full year if it goes beyond 3 years old, then you have to pay but is dependent on what modules you want. The car has 3G built in to download map updates and to connect to the internet to search for places for the sat nav, the weather, remote door locking, tyre pressure reporting etc. and you can send destinations from the app to the car in advance. No I dont think it has remote heat/cool, it didnt on mine.

I don't own mine outright (judge me!) I could have bought a pre face lift outright but was set on the later version. I had originally intended to buy around April but someone approached me about buying my VW R32 and it was too good an opportunity to pass up, I wasn't advertising at all.

A couple of pictures now I've spent all morning giving it the first proper clean. Detailing kit in the spoiler.

Bilt Hamber Autofoam @ 4% PIR
CarPro Reset on wheels and body
Polish Angel Supersport PTFE Wheel Wax on wheels
Swissvax Pneu on tyres. 2 coats
Polish Angel Rapidwaxx on the body
GTechniq C4 permanent trim restorer on all window trim, lower bumper valance, wiper arms and roof aerial
Auto Glym Fast Glass
Autosol metal polish and grade 0000 wire wool on the exhaust tips. They've come up much better but a long way to go till I'm completely happy with them
GTechniq Matt Dash on interior trims
Dr Leather (ooh er!) wipes to clean all leather.

Initial plans are to enjoy through winter, I do about 300 miles a week commuting. I'll have the front bumper resprayed (there are some stone chips) when winter is over and I might look into PPF for it once cured. Everything will be ceramic coated once the weather allows & I'll start playing around with some different topper coats, see which works best with the Paladium Silver.

In the meantime, the engine bay needs bringing up to the same standard as the exterior, so that's next.

Looks great.
A shell garage - it's natural home :D

Be interested to know who owns theirs outright to those on deals.

Nah I’m just taking the mick really. Seems nearly every thread in here with a nice car devolves into that posters personal finances and what level of crypto they are gonna cash out this quarter, the APR on their latest car, the balloon payment etc etc. So boring.

That’s gorgeous.

Lovely. I’m losing my touch, is it a C or an E class?

Thanks, that’s a C class (W204)

@Gaygle how did your collection go? :D

Very well thanks :D It's a 2013 C63 Coupe with PPP, 2 owners and a full MB service history.

Love your C63 wagon! Fast estates are just plain cool.

My initial thoughts are - jesus . This car can go from cruising beautifully, with just that lovely V8 thrum to keep you company, to an absolutely nutter smoking it's tyres and wanting to kill you in a split second. The engine in it is absolutely fantastic, the torque it produces low down is not something I'm used to coming from an E92 M3 but I can really see what people mean when they say that the E92 M3 doesn't have much torque. The C63 will happily punt itself off down the road from 1500rpm and keep pulling relentlessly until the red line with that insane exhaust note.

I always stayed away from AMG models because I mistakenly had the impression that they were wallowy and wildly out of control most of the time and they had too much power which the chassis couldn't handle, but that really really isn't true. They can go wild if you provoke it or aren't careful but they feel very sharp to drive on the road.

Very quick comparison with the E92:

Steering in the C63 is much better. The turn in is just so much more direct and goes exactly where you want it (and this is on Continental 5P's - which weren't known for their good feel - and the E92 was on Michelin 4S which are obviously well known for their great feel)

Ride - The E92 is much better - mine had EDC and even in the Sport setting, it still rode better than the Merc. In the E92's comfort setting, it was much more comfortable than the Merc. This surprised me. The seats in the Mercedes are lovely and huggy, and I'd have to say, I prefer them to the M3's.

Interior - The Mercedes feels solid, the doors, the seats, the handles, much more so than the E92. However, I would say the E92 has the more modern interior, the C63 has quite an aged interior now with all those phone buttons on the dash, and a small 7" screen. My 2009 E92 had the CIC iDrive which looks and performs better than the Comand 4.5 in the Mercedes - no real contest between them in terms of interior styling. That said, the Merc's infotainment works just fine. I don't mess around with all this new stuff in cars these days - I just want to be able to stream my Spotify playlist via Bluetooth and I'm happy. However to turn that on it's head a bit, in the C63 I *am* loving the dashboard behind the steering wheel with the screen that shows trip computers/tyre pressure monitors/AMG menu/options to turn on and off - it makes the E92's basic dashboard look a bit old with it's dot matrix style readouts.

Looks - Completely subjective, I loved the "power dome" and the vents on the E92's bonnet, along with the aggressive side skirts. The Mercedes is more subtle from the front, but looks beautiful from behind - all round more elegant than the M3, which is more "sporty". I love both the M3's CP wheels which I had, and the AMG multi spoke alloys. On brake porn, the C63 wins hands down, no competition - those giant red AMG calipers let you know it means business. The Mercedes is more subtle, and with Mercedes diluting the AMG as each day goes on, to the majority of people, it won't look any different to Daves C230 diesel AMG PLUS PREMIUM PRO PERFORMANCE NIGHT SHADOW BLACK SERIES EDITION down the road. The noise it makes is the thing that lets people know that it's a bit different.

Engine - I loved the E92's high revving engine, the induction noise was additive as hell, but to really get the best of it sound and performance wise, you'd have to be nailing it. It also does lack torque low down and you'd have to be prepared to shuffle gears around to get into the power band. On track the E92 absolutely came alive - it was joyous to drive on track however on the road you couldn't get the most of the M3 (or I certainly wasn't prepared to drive in a way to do so). The C63's engine is a masterpiece, it just is and works so much better on the road. On the track the lack of the LSD would *really* show the C63 up over the M3 but on the road, you don't get to those limits of driving where an LSD is having to help out. Both fantastic engines in their own right and very different from one another.

Gearbox - The C63 has got the 7 speed MCT which is sort of a modified version of a traditional automatic gearbox. The E92 had the M-DCT box which is a full fat double clutch box. The Mercedes MCT box is buttery smooth when put into comfort mode, lovely around town and when in manual mode, the changes are pretty quick really. The M-DCT had lightening fast changes and responded instantly to everything you told it to do without hesitation. In the appropriate setting, the box could be so fast and abrupt in fact, that when you were going for it and changed gear, the change would unsettle the rear end in the wet, which was a bit unnerving! When you put the M-DCT in comfort just cruised along, it work well until you started getting to slower traffic (in sub 20mph traffic it wasn't great)/roundabouts etc in which case it became a bit clunky and lurched every now and then. However, the MCT is lovely at these slower speeds through town and is always smooth, however when getting "on it" it doesn't respond as fast as the M-DCT and won't allow you to do multiple changes down instantaneously like the M-DCT did. The M-DCT was fantastic at downshifting and blipping the throttle, it worked great. The MCT has tried to emulate this and from what I can tell, they haven't quite nailed it. When you downshift in the MCT you still get 50% of a throttle blipped DCT-esque downshift, 50% of an old traditional automatic lurch downshift. I'm going to look into getting the software updated on the car as I know that the E92 DCT was pretty crap when it first came out and i took them until around 2012 to perfect it through software updates. It might well be the same for the Mercedes if it's still on it's factory software.

Overall, both absolutely beautiful cars and I'm glad I've had a chance to experience them both. And I'm so very excited to see what else the Mercedes can do as time goes on. I look back at it and smile as I'm walking away and that's what I wanted from a car.

Is it me or is an AMG Mercedes the new ocuk Mondeo?!

I've noticed this too! I wonder if the recent announcements about petrol/diesel cars being banned by 2030 and the fact that many manufacturers are heavily downsizing their previously large engine cars is causing people to have a "it's now or never" feeling and buy them.
