Mercedes Benz and AMG Owners

I've had secondary cats and center resonator removed - replaced with an X-pipe. I do notice the increased volume at cruising speeds but it's not droney - overall, just a bit louder and more V8 noise throughout the rev range. A bit raspier at the top end and deeper idle.

What car did you do it to?

I've also been looking at putting in electrical exhaust cutouts instead so that I can turn it on/off whenever I like.

^^ he has a CLS55K :)

Having been in cars with an X-Pipe i personally wouldn't do it to mine. The additional droan and noise is noticeable and to me, these cars are about being incredibly capable without shouting about it. That said, i am an old fart when it comes to noise and comfort settings, my ABC has never been out of C :p

I know what you mean. I'm worried it'll be too loud or it'll get boring quick and I'll regret having them removed. I'd prefer to be able to turn it on/off whenever I like.

Maybe I just need to buy a 2nd car to make loads of noise in :p

Yup CLS55 as Jez said :)

I always felt the stock exhaust didn’t give enough of a V8 sound so the changes I made make it a bit more obvious but not OTT - though everyone’s got their own threshold for what’s acceptable :p

There are a few aftermarket valve exhausts available which would do automatic switching (with manual switching options if you prefer) if you want the flexibility. Depends on the car though and they usually sit as replacements for the rear silencers rather than the center one. They’re not cheap though!

I've got a CLS550 so it's not an AMG which makes me wonder if I should bother.

The ones I've been looking at sit right before the backbox and go for about $400 for the wireless switches which, including labor, is about as much as I want to spend.

AMG or not, it'll still have a nice V8 sound if opened up a little.

I think I know the type you mean - a sort of valved Y section with a key fob remote? I think they were around that sort of price when I last looked. You could have them bypass the center silencer instead - not sure which would be better for sound though.

Another option that seems to be recommended often is to get the 63 AMG rear silencers to replace yours and keep the rest of the system as-is. Not sure what they go for price wise though.

Yep, exactly. Something similar to this. My only worry is heat... I don't want to melt the underside of my car!

The AMG silencers are about $700 2nd hand and I'd have to swap the tips out as I don't think they'll fit with the non-AMG diffuser.

1:45 for the sound

2 months since I placed the order at the dealership and I've just had an update...

HUDs and widescree digital cockpits are out of stock at the factory for the 'forseeable future', so they have no idea when they'll be able to build my E-Class. Grumble grumble.

That is very poor customer service - How can they run out of stock of the digital cockpits !?!? Surely it's basic order forecasting.
My E-Class Coupe order kept getting delayed (for other reasons) so I cancelled it.

BMW aren't that much better.
My G31 order placed end of October was in stock and available for delivery within 2 weeks
Then it moved to 11th December
Today it's been changed again to 10th January

I'm beginning to think lease companies use the same random number generators as Insurance companies :p

When we bought a new E Class, Mercedes managed to find a pre-built one with the COMAND and Widescreen cockpit (with some other spec too and in the right colour). The factory weren't even accepting new orders with widescreen specified due to there being no supply of screens for another 3 months (at the time).

It was one of the big advertising and selling points of the car, so it's surprising they didn't order more screens to start with.

So Mercedes has just launched the new CLS - surely under the new naming convention it should be called the CLE
Yeah I was expecting that change too.

It looks like the US is losing the V8 550 in favor of the straight 6 450. Pity, the V8 is a lovely bit of kit.

I'm not sure how I feel about the exterior but the interior is lovely. I can't understand the move to 3 rear seats though, the 4-door coupes are so much nicer with the 2 rear 'bucket' seats. You'd just buy an E-Class if you wanted the extra rear space.

Agree on droan but they sound epic

Finally got a build / delivery date for our E220d, 3 months after ordering. Build mid-Feb delivery mid-March and they're guaranteeing the diesel changeover bonus even if it's delivered post-31st March. What a drama.

Dealer was saying they had to swap a variety of builds with a variety of other dealers in order to get an allocation with these options. I don't really understand the process but never mind, doesn't matter now!

Looked at the E class with the view of perhaps getting the E43 as I haven’t really clicked with my 640d GC. The interior looks much better than the 6 but found some of the switch gear of the E class felt pretty cheap and nasty. A more interesting place to be in for sure than the BMW.

Pretty much my thoughts after poking around an E as well. I thought the plastic lip underneath the wood trim across the dash was particularly nasty. It's improved in the S, but even the switchgear in the S seems surprisingly low-quality.

Perhaps the plastic itself is high-quality, but because the switches are so light, they have a rather cheap feel to them.

I’ve been eyeing up CL63’s

08/09 models, anyone had one of these models? Any stories to tell or ownership experiences?

I’m after one with black leather and no wood inserts. The one I’ve found has these but is white. I kind of like it, but it’ll be a whole lot of car to keep clean
