Merry Xmas Pottsey

PPUs are gimmicky. What next? AIPU's? Why not thread management processing units? Memory management processing unit, sure the latency'd be bad but it takes up an empty PCI slot so why not? I have no doubt in my mind that properly optimized for, you could get similar or superior effects on a CPU. Sure I have no proof, but damn if anyone else in this thread does!

“Good, I'm glad we're agreed on the fact that a PPU is not necessary, however I'm struggling to understand why you would spend money on a PPU instead of a new CPU when you just admitted your CPU is 2 years old? Surely a new CPU would overall be much more beneficial to you than a PPU?”
At the time I bought the PPU my CPU was top of the range well almost top of the range bareing extreme edition CPU's. A PPU was the most cost effective way to speed up my system. There was no point in putting the PPU cash towards a new CPU or PPU back then.

If I didnt have a PPU today and it was a choice between a PPU or new CPU I would get new CPU. Flankly I would prefer both but the CPU wins out. I see the PPU as a luxury item. You dont buy a PPU unless the rest of the system is up to spec.

EDIT:
“Have you read the bit-tech review of the PhysX only maps on UT3? The test machine got absolutely mauled.”
They used old slow drivers intread of the fast UT drivers. Hardly fair. There resuilts are x4 worse then what everyone else is reporting.

It’s a little odd they on minimum settings get 6fps. Everyone else on max settings get 25fps.

NO!, ppu's aren't a gimmick
physx ppu's are, until they are built onto boards/cpu's thus making them mainstream developers arent likely to jump onto the ship
With the increasing lean on having the load on the cpu it wouldnt surprise me if they were integrated into the chip

I guess it must be all down to preference then. I honestly do not believe a PPU would be beneficial to my system at all, and it's not like I can't spare the cash to get one if I wanted to. I just genuinely don't feel there is any need for one. I don't play any games where having a PhysX card would make a substantial difference, nor do I know of any games on the horizon that I'm interested in that make use of a PPU.
