If only merc could sort out the porpoising they’d be miles ahead, assuming it’s even possible with their concept.

Could be an interesting weekend with Max’s struggles and Merc looking vaguely in the mix.

I feel like Sainz is trying to push too much probably the pressure getting to him car that should be challenging and Charles doing better and its costing ferrari money

Will see where Merc really are when qualifying gets underway hope they are in the mix will be so good to see 3 teams challenging

Yup, sadly. He needs to step back from driving at 105% and getting some solid points on the board for a few races. He'll get there, but realistically any chance of this title has gone. He'd be better of regrouping and getting himself in a better place for next season.

In a Discord server I compared Leclerc vs Sainz to Button vs Barrichello. In 2008 Barrichello comprehensively outclassed Button, but when Honda/Brawn nailed the BGP 001 it was Button who emerged as the comfortable team leader while Barrichello was the one who was making constant mistakes, poor strategy calls and desperate lunges trying to keep up. Sainz's season so far as mirrored that a fair bit.

Barrichello recovered to have a better second half of the season (even beating Button regularly) but by then the damage had already been done and he was let go at the end of the season (Button could have stayed, but thought McLaren the better long term project - oh how wrong he was, though to be fair it was the right move at the time he made it).

It's something Button himself said during FP2, though that was more about Hamilton adapting to driving a poor car better than he did. Still that was a long time ago, and Hamilton has changed his style and approach a lot since then, driving the hybrids like Button drove the much lighter V8s.

While their single lap pace looked better, they were still a long way off in the race sims (about 4 tenths per lap down on average) but the running was so fragmented that it was hard to get any real gauge.

The track still has a lot of evolution to come - I mean 3/4 of the way through FP1 one Williams was over 4 seconds off the pace, while the other Williams was in 2nd, half a second off! Plenty can change before Q3 gets underway.

Worth mentioning to those with Sky but without a Sky Sports subscription that the F1 qualifying (but not the race) and the first W Series race are live on Sky Showcase (previously Sky One). W Series starts at 19:25 (build-up 19:10).

The second W Series race (15:20) is on Sky Sports Mix (also free to those with Sky).

The W Series races are still on C4 (unknown if just highlights) but delayed until the following day.

Merc have said that in the wind tunnel their car/concept was incredibly quick. They just didn't anticipate the extreme porpoising.

It does sound like IF they crack that, the Merc will be very competitive. Red Bull could really end up ruing the massive amount of lost points due to reliability in the first few races, and Ferrari the same with the mistakes their drivers have been making.

I think that's a bit harsh on Leclerc. Yes he threw away a few points in Imola, but it's far too early in the season to be playing it safe. It's a 23 race season and they've only had 4.

Verstappen has been pretty much error free, and maybe that is something Leclerc should aspire to, but it's a fine line and Leclerc's first F1 title fight.

Although Merc seemed quick I still think they’ll be 0.7s down off pole.

They were losing almost 0.4s in sector 1 alone compared to Ferrari and I don’t think any team were running their engines at full tilt.

Wind tunnel testing is limited to a max wind speed of 150km/h. There was no porpoising at that speed and it caught them and other teams majorly by surprise.

I'll not be able to watch this weekend due to pretty extreme time difference. Seems like this track could provide a decent race though?
Definitely going to try and catch a re-run, but I'll not be able to help myself and check the results beforehand.

I did mean mostly Sainz. Leclerc has been good up until the last race where he should have played the long game and just nabbed the podium spot. What he was trying seemed like a long shot anyway.

It doesn't seem likely. A few long corners, a few off camber corners and being extremely dusty off line means it's going to be very hard to overtake, unless there is a large speed difference.

I don't mind the track itself so much though. It looks quite a challenge with plenty of opportunity to make a mistake and with some corners which will genuinely sort out the good from the bad.

I'll gladly take that. Drivers under pressure and a few mistakes or opportune divebombs would be nice to watch.

After Zhou Guanyu horrifically failed last race, I'm hoping he bounces back this weekend. :D
