Catching a wedding ring during an incident can easily exert enough force to rip your finger in half. Now imagine someone loses their watch during a high speed crash… that sort of weighted object would kill a spectator. Are they really making drivers take their wedding rings off. Drivers wear gloves, how is a ring going to effect anything.
To give you a bit of insight many businesses ask staff to remove jewellery or wear certain types of clothing dependant on the risk. For instance, I was the safety manager at a large power plant and due to the high voltage hazards we mandated 100% cotton clothing (including underwear) as it provides better protection in the event of a arc flash event. It comes down to the calorific value of the electrical energy you’re protecting against.. whilst cotton kegs won’t stop an event in itself it’s all additional protection.
Media are spinning a non-issue in to a bigger one. I see this as the FIA putting their foot down and stamping a bit of authority where before they’ve allowed things to slide.
Are they focusing on the little details? Absolutely.. but this way they can make quick changes without all the red tape that would come with the bigger things.
