Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 announced.

So it turns out this is impossible to play on a keyboard and I can't work out how to use the mouse as a yoke.

Thankfully, VR is AMAZING! I was able to actually grab the flight stick and use really smooth movements to fly without issue. I'm surprised by how well it runs as well, just need to tweak the settings as the visuals are obviously not as good as when using a monitor. It's so chill flying around in VR though.

Great to hear about VR performance..what headset are you using. I never really got on with VR in MSFS was considerably worse with my Quest 2 than DCS for example..

Quest 3 with 4070 Ti Super and 7800X3D. Don't get me wrong it wasn't perfect, some graphical glitching and the cities didn't look their best, but that was just with default settings. So I'm hoping with some tweaks I can improve the visuals and hopefully keep similar performance.

It felt so great sitting in a plane though, proper relaxing.

I tried to request a refund, as a known issue effecting a lot of users since launch, and no resolution date in sight, it may improve but seems to be a just accept it and wait response. The request was auto declined, Flight sim support unable to help, xbox support got me to resubmit it again but not working. Very poor from Xbox and Microsoft.

Actually managed to fly something today, was the training section. Last time I tried I was getting an error saying something along the lines of "the Cessna 172 is not available" - need to find my flightstick as the xbox controller doesn't smooth.

Now it seems to be working (touch wood) I've done a few flights, I did Auckland to Wellington, in the Cirrus Vision G2. I'm really liking this plane, the autopilot and navigation is easy to use, it's light and small like a cesna but a lot more capable because of the single jet engine.

It is a beautiful and very capable aircraft. Have you pulled the CAPS handle on the roof yet? (Cirrus Airframe Parachute System).

I have been trying a few things and not sure if improved much but seemed to help a bit, if you go to the marketplace and in the top right next to search click the Gear icon and change the content location to another drive. I changed my rolling cache and content to another ssd away from my ssd game install and seemed a bit more reliable. You can also enable developer mode and show fps to see if limited in a certain area and see if it's actually downloading anything.

Last night I noticed that dlss wasn't on by default so I switched it on thinking "yay smoother game!" but jeeeeesus no. Glass cockpit looks like **** if the numbers are moving, weird artifacts on buildings AND it didn't feel any smoother.

Yet another facet of MS/Asobo's decision to go full on with cloud streaming ... my GPU rarely exceeds 50% utilisation in this sim. Cranking up the settings does nothing - simply not receiving enough scenery data to push the hardware.

I tested this extensively yesterday vs 2020. I only fly in and use VR.

Interestingly I had zero issues with loading times or missing textures or any server gubbins. Long story very short - it runs about 30% slower than 2020, and seems to be almost entirely GPU limited from my tests in this regard (I'm using a 3090FE). This was matching the settings as best as possible with 2020.

Now the question is - does it look 30% 'better' than 2020? Hmmm, sort of but not really.

At the moment with the settings and res I'm accustomed to in VR in 2020, 2024 is not really usable for me as I am right on the margins of being able to maintain a steady 30fps at all times in VR in 2020. When you're at these fine margins of performance for VR, 30% degradation is HUGE. So unless Asobo vastly improve performance - (they won't!) - or I upgrade my PC I'll have to stick with 2020 for now.

I need to try and remember what I'm doing.

I remember playing FSX a fair bit, I'd gotten to the point where I knew how to setup the ILS beacons for landing and setup the navigation using the autopilot (GPS).

I think I'd got just short of full navigation using the radio beacons (so no satnav) as well.

I've more or less got the navigation working but I cannot remember how to get it to ILS mode.

Also need to figure out the communication to ATC, because I know I'm not doing it right, or at all for the approach/destination.

I tried career mode this morning which is ok, but it's kinda dumbed down, maybe there is and I haven't got there yet, but would be good if it gave you and in game tutorial if how to do all the above properly, you know without the superimposed radar at the top left and big glowing floating magical gates in the sky.

Otherwise the game is good now it's actually working.

The problem is a lot of the ATC, navigation systems and avionics aren't working properly. So half the time your "mistakes" are really the fault of the sim itself. For example, the autopilot in the Cessna 172 is broken - it will actively try and kill you. And on my first full flight, I got clearance from ATC to land ... but as soon as I did was told "I didn't have permission !" and proceeded to tell me to take off and go around again ( by this point I was taxiing to a parking area ).

If I buy this it's all about the performance as I play in VR(quest 3) and I found 2020 graphics to be lovely - the only issue was achieving smooth frame rates.

Now with multi threading I expected improvement, but online reviews seem to say there isn't much and even that there is performance left on the table with CPU and GPU utilisation only running 50%?

Yes, this is correct ... especially for GPU utilisation. I have a 4090 FE and I barely hit 50% in MSFS2024. Multithreading does appear to be improved ... I'm seeing load spread more evenly across multiple cores compared to MSFS 2020. As I said earlier though, the real issue is the cloud streaming ... if your PC doesn't receive sufficient data then your hardware will never be taxed. Great for people with older hardware, but for those with high specs it's a bit ****

If game assets aren't coming through properly then the frame rate should rocket - why isn't the GPU / CPU being fully stretched to maximise frame rate? Assuming you're not locking it to a number that is.
