Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 announced.

My game pass runs out today so thought I would give it one more try and the performance is vastly improved, like it's a new game. Hope they keep up the improvements at that rate

Had my first proper crash that wasnt caused by the simulation speed spazzing out.

Coming down to land at Southampton (EGHI) coming from the north, in the Cessna 172. There was a nasty crosswind, even the autopilot in approach mode using the ILS was struggling. Got about 100ft over the runway, switched off the AP, I managed to get it down, but whilst on the runway the wind started whipping the wings up and trying to compensate got the plane sideways then it planted the nose into the runway.

I got it on the second attempt although that wasn't the most prettiest of landings either.

Hmmmmm, seems the servers are getting hammered again I am seeing day 1 issues again with the game no loading.

FS2020 was also having widespread issues earlier. Either way, let’s hope MS/Asobo give us the option to download regions and aircraft of our choice locally. Apparently there are two sim updates planned, one next week and a larger one the week after. It will be interesting to watch the developer live stream next week.

I see pretty good things are being said about the new A330 in FS2024. Has anyone flown it yet?

Not flown it myself but hearing good things too and seen some positive reviews also. Certainly looks like one of the better ones / least buggy so far. Hopefully will get a decent following good support especially after the disappointment of the Aerosoft one.

I'm not hating on the game at all, actually I think it's decent.

But definitely some glitches.

Free flight mode seems to be ok with regards to this, but in career mode, if you change your flight plan the game gets the hump with you.

I'm trying to play them without using any of the super imposed guides, that I don't think.... You can turn off in career mode, so just using the aircrafts instruments as you would.

Several of the missions I've had recently are flying into Southampton. The ILS for that is pointed north/north east.

The flight plan in every mission it seems gives you awful pattern entry.

So if you amend your flight plan, it'll sort of let you do it. There is a nav point called PEPIS which lines up nicely.

So I add that waypoint, remove the ones it out, upload flight plan, file with ATC. On the map it looks all good.

But in flight weird stuff starts happening. Like it kinda thinks the old ones are still there, at the same time not. What the results is, is the stages sometimes get out of sync.

For example, I'm following the ILS, in approach mode, 2 miles from the runway, I've got ATC landing clearance, and it's telling me to land, at the same time the ATC is screaming at me to climb and maintain 11k ft......

I also had one occasion where I landed, I even followed the guided taxi way markers to the end point, and my mission requirement was still set a land.....that one also wouldn't let me complete the mission.

I figured out the missions with as red circle or dot on them are using live time and weather if selected, seems weird that its only a select few that offer this.

I cannot figure out the AI crew thingy, can we buy new planes and have the AI operate them?
How do we select misions for them or is it automated?
So many things not explained at all in the sim.

I thought id try the helicopters this morning and its as if my old Hotas X is unsupported, cannot get anything to work for copter flying :(

Theres a tonnes of gear out there but its a minefield,.
Anyone recommend something for a casual flight simmer to replace this old hotasX?

I've not tried it in 2024 I briefly tried it in 2020 and I think on default controls flying a helicopter is pretty impossible.

It should work fine, an extension on the stick makes flying soooo much nice but you can do it with the default ok depending on the amount of automation on the helo. ie, some like the H145/H160/H225 you only really need to use the pedals on takeoff and landing so assuing you're stick has a twist finction thats fine.
On helo's that need a lot of manual control the twist gets very awkward and tireing, you really need a set of pedals for these.

You should only need some very basic controls to fly:
Cyclic mapped to the stick
Collective mapped to the throttle
Rudder/torque mapped to pedals or the twist grip on the stick

And trim/trim reset. Some helo's will fly on the stick then when you press trim will hold that stick position. Others like the H145/H160 will only give you full control on the cyclic if you HOLD the trim switch, then on release they will keep that stick/trim position. Trying to fly these latter ones without holding the trim makes it feel like they are fighting you all the time, which they actually are ;)

No idea why, but I really REALLY suck at landing GA aircraft(Kodiak 100) I'm doing lots of approaches and landings and am getting better, but does anyone have any good landing tutorials they could throw my way?

I dunno specifically for that plane, but I find it you try and land too gently you almost end up being worse.

You need to have the flaps down but also still be powered, I find if you try and float it down the plane can get unstable, where as if you keep some power on, it drags the plane against the flaps which stabilises.

I would love the ability to be able to save missions half way through.

In a Cessna 172, use 20deg of flap on base and then 30deg on final. Ensure your speed is in the white arc/range before you bring in the flaps. Re-trim after flap changes. On final approach, keep the runway about 1/3 of the way up the windshield, keep a steady approach speed. In a Cessna 172, that would be about 65kts, bringing the speed back further once you are about to transition to touch down when over the runway threshold. Use pitch to control your speed and power to control your height. When approaching or over the runway threshold (depending on how high you are) bring the power back to idle and gently pitch up (flare) and let the main wheels touch the runway, followed by the nose wheel. If you float, just let the aeroplane keep flying, hold your pitch. It will touch down when it’s ready, don’t try and force it down. Look to the far end of the runway to maintain directional stability as you touch down. Brake gently to slow down to a speed where you can safely vacate the runway. If you are not happy, apply full power and go around, raising your flaps in stages.

In a light GA single engine aircraft the approach path may be steeper than the standard 3deg glide slope that the runway side PAPI indicators provide at large airports, so don’t chase the PAPI. This is a good thing as it means you won’t be at the back end of the drag curve in the unlikely event of an engine failure on final approach. Think energy management.

NB: just realised you wanted a tutorial before I started yapping!! I’ll look online later and see what I can find and post them.
