**** Microsoft Surface Book Thread ****

This last firmware update is a good one as I've had no battery power drain when disconnected for two days now.

Hi everyone,

I've asked a friend to bring me on back from the US as it works out a bit cheaper, I was wonder if anything more substantial than a simple plug converter is needed?

I believe you're running a US surface book Cosimo, did you have any issues with bringing over the warranty? My friend asked at the US Microsoft store and they simply said to register it once here but just checking in case I should start emailing before opening it up.

The PSU is universal and runs of UK mains so either a simple plug adapter or a new mains lead will do.

I could only register mine on the US site at the time but I've been told that MS UK will honour the guarantee if it goes wrong. I'll have to try and register it here to see what happens.

EDIT: The UK site has also accepted my serial number.

Thank you very much, a big weight off my mind.

BTW, for whomever mentioned the Enter key.....UK spec appears to have double height Enter key :)
Busy migrating my SP3 and so on, but so far loving my SB!

How are you finding the weight? I really like the overall device but for my use I thought the weight was likely to be less than ideal.

I guess at about 1.5kg IIRC it's not the lightest laptop around but for something with a discrete GPU (and a physical keyboard plus a touchscreen) you can't really expect it to weigh much less?

I mean something like a Dell XPS 13" still weights around 1.3kg and that doesn't have a dedicated GPU nor a removable display. It's also about the same weight as a 13" retina Macbook but that doesn't have a discrete GPU nor a touchscreen either (though the CPU is a marginally better quad core part).

Id prefer if it was closer to 1kg than 1.5kg but there's nothing else on the market significantly lighter spec for spec than it unless you start looking at Core M based models like the Macbook 12", the Asus UX305.

I guess a lot depends on your usage and obviously some of them are significantly less powerful devices but I had some hands on with a few of the new/recent 2 in 1s at work including the Surface Book and some of them were half the weight - granted without a dedicated GPU but some did have an extra battery in the keyboard, but also in tablet mode they were felt in a brief hands on much more comfortable for longer use in terms of weight and weight distribution.

In the end I actually ended up with the Toshiba as mentioned though I wouldn't have paid full price for it.

Presumably one bought over in the States would have a US keyboard layout, with no dedicated £ key, and other minor differences also.

This might not bother some folk, but having used a laptop with one of these recently, I can't say that I was ever really happy with it.

Anyone had any issues with external monitors?

I have an LG 24mp55 and its detecting no signal from hdmi -> mini display adapter.

Tried installing latest drivers for monitor but not happening :(. Eliminated its a broken cable so thinking it has to be the adapter or drivers aren't there yet.

Any advice is very welcome as I do really need an external monitor.

Just in case you've not been through all of theses:

I suspect that it is this (passive cable):

With docking station buy may help:

Thank you, I think the second thread explained it until the original poster said he purchased a non-active adapter and it's working again, very confusing.

Thanks.

Installing now ^^

Really, really pleased with my Surface Book, now I have had a couple of weeks to get to know it. Initially had a few issues with Windows Hello ('Camera turning on' and clearly not turning on) but all resolved now.....very slick machine, really zippy in everything I throw at it. Have only separated the disc and saucer section on a few occasions, but have been pleasantly surprised with the weight of the screen portion. Oh, and battery life is markedly better than my SP3 :)

Similar thoughts to the post above. I was quite worried coming from a macbook pro if I would miss many of the features but I'm very pleased after 1 week with the device. There are a couple but overall there are a lot more positives.

Couple of questions for users.

Anyone actually use the pen day to day? Found 0 use for it so far.
Anyone purchased a sleeve for protection? Sadly 13 inch macbook one doesn't fit.
Do you work for MS/have a relationship with them Cosimo? Seem pretty on the ball when it comes to any news on the device :)

Used the pen a few times with Photoshop but it remains largely unused.

I use an old Sony one from an SZ1-XP (13.3" screen) which fits perfectly:

I don't work for MS, did have a relationship with them but now am on the Windows Insider Programme and am I member of this community:

:)

I haven't really used the pen much yet, but did from time-to-time with the SP3 I previously had.....we will see!
As for a case, I actually did have some success with a Samsonite case which was originally bought for my wife's MacBook Pro......snug, but fits! On the lookout for a nice 'proper' one, mind, preferably with somewhere to safely store the pen - nothing too bulky, as will still be going in a laptop bag! Sure there will be some soon
