microsoft to make own tablets

Microsoft WILL subsidise them if they're sensible: when you're trying to break into a market where your main competitor has 80% and many consumers think ALL tablets are "iPads", then you have to be both cheaper and better than your competitor to break in. That's why the iPad is still outselling all Android tablets combined - they gave Apple too much of a head start.

Especially as it looks like spec wise the Microsoft Tablet seems inferior as well. Microsoft will probably only get one shot at this and if they mess up they will always be a minor player in the tablet and mobile sector. They need to come in at a better price point and I think even something like a free version of Microsoft Office for the first 6 months, just to get customers to jump ship really. Might be a bit of a gamble just relying on the Microsoft Windows brand to get them sales.

Just heard today that there won't be a 3G/4G version either, almost rules me out from buying one. Hopefully the other manufacturers will have that feature, I'm looking forward to see what Samsung will have to offer.

Wow what an omission, to get me with that proviso it'll have to be the RT for fun and be cheaper than £400 but when you consider that a refurbed ipad2 is about £250 or a Sammy 10.1 about £270 new it'll have to be pretty special to get me to spend anywhere near £400:eek:

TBH £640 is the best price I've seen and I would buy the pro at that price, however we have to contend with the British Shopkeeper who thinks he deserves to live in a million pound house and drive a 100k car on turnover that doesn't warrant such excess, if those are the prices in $$$ I will import rather than give a thief an extra £200 profit on top of the rest.

What a load of trip. Most of the extra cost is associated with taxes.

All Windows RT devices will have a free version of Office as far as I know.

That is a very good start as they need a good selling point for people who might be invested in the iOS platform for them to jump over. Even if they have to sell at their cost or below for a while I think they should because they are so far behind it is untrue so their immediate aim shouldn't be profit but to take a big chunk of Apple's and Androids market-share. They also need to get a lot of apps on their at release as well so maybe an incentive

I'm quite keen for Microsoft to succeed because imo that is what is best for consumers. If we have three major platforms all putting out great features it will all bode well for us and hopefully bring prices down or keep them where they are :)

I'm sorry but that has to be the biggest load of BS I've read on this forum and this forum is seriously full of it at times, so clueless it is untrue....

What a load of tripe back at ya, I know full well what taxes and profit margins are in all levels of retail, UK shop keepers require for themselves a bigger margin on turnover than their competitors, I'm not talking about low rent USA, one of my associates is a millionaire because of a 400% mark up on shirts, suckers pay what suckers pay.

Prove it dude, if a mans shop does less than £4k a week he should be taking Less than £400 or get another job, I'm sick of people thinking they can have a wealthy existence selling 5 pc's and a couple of web cams, if your turnovers low live poor or go.

You have clearly never been a Manager at any such store, badly for you..I have, the trunovers are extremely poor on anything technology related, TVs/ LCD screens we where lucky to make £10 on some models, other models £50, Pcs are even more cut throat, depending wher make model, laptop more so, Apple stuff overall was poor, but a better connection to people buying accessories with them. Then factoring in taxes, deliveries to households, deliveries to companies, all that costs money, no one is really making it rich except the product developers.

No, just a general contempt for people who rip other people off and think they're clever for doing so, pathetic behavior, just live at the level your trade gives you on a reasonable mark up for renting a space goods can be stored at and sold from.

If you want to be wealthy lower your prices and increase your turn over, if you can't achieve this tough get out of business and get another job, stop ripping folk off.

FYI HK has some of the highest property prices in the world but their ethos is turnover rather than margin.

You clearly have absolutely no idea what you are talking about whatsoever, despite some of the folks here trying to explain to you...:eek:

But none of this relates to the technology sector. As stated above in this area the mark up is tiny already.

Nearly all the us prices you see online for us prices are pre tax, in the us where state tax would then have to be added on top of the price.

So technology prices are not a great deal different to over here, and the main difference in prices comes from our taxes.

And this is coming from someone ho goes to America quite a lot, so I have a good idea of what items sell in shops for over there and over here.

no its not. people in america pay tax and if u add up there tax for the product it is still day and night cheaper then getting it here.

No because you most often see prices in America without state tax added.

I can assure you there is not a massive difference in prices no where near what you think.

And then the tax applied is a lot lower than the tax we have to pay, Shock horror different countries pay different taxes. Even in America taxes differer from state to state hence the prices are most often pre tax.
