microsoft to make own tablets

No way it'll be higher than that. Saying that this is the first tablet that could actually replace a laptop really, mighty impressive product so far.

The way I look at it is, its got the specs of an ultrabook, the functionality of an ultrabook, but its more compact and can be used as a dedicated tablet, so you would expect it to be priced around the same. I would have one over an ultrabook anyday.

What's the deal with apps, can it run x86 code? Or are we relying on people developing for it?

And that's the dilemma I am now faced with. Earlier this evening I priced up a Macbook Air and now I'm putting that on ice! Especially at £1449 for the high-end model..

To quote the live feed "It has access to all Windows apps for music, movies and more."

Well I meant more like if I wanted to take my copy of Doom or Quake and play it on the tablet on the go.

I'm a firm believer that a product like this is only as good as the applications that back it up and having access to a load of stuff already would give it a huge boost.

The Windows RT one is dependent on new Metro apps only.

Windows 8 Pro one is the best of both worlds (x86) - a Tabtop/Tabook

Wow! I'm actually very impressed will be interesting to see the prices Microsoft release them at, that keyboard/touchpad cover is a fantastic idea!

I'm unsure now actually. There's still a couple of issues; at launch the RT machine is likely to be a little... lacking in software. With the x86 machine, I have to wonder just how much people are prepared to pay for a tablet. There could be that 'but it's just a tablet!' barrier stopping people from dropping more than £800(?) on the machine.

Is the Win8 Pro version basically the full Win8 OS?...as oppsosed the Metro Only side of RT, im confused by this a little.

The Win8 Pro was exactly what I was hoping for. However, why would it cost double the RT version?

Just needs a beefier CPU, additional battery life and some more material to allow for cooling.

However, that is what tablets are moving towards. A fully capable x86 OS on a slate. I'm glad Microsoft have got the ball rolling.

Better screen, an Ivy Bridge CPU, more RAM, bigger hard drives, better cooling, a full version of the OS, bigger battery, more connections, more RAM etc etc etc

All those things add up to £££s. There is a reason why ultrabooks are over double the price of a bog standard PC World special laptop. Im sure Microsoft could have made it cheaper with the same rough internal specs, but the design would have suffered as a result.

Android tablets and the ipad of course have 1200p and above displays at the $500 level. I'll give you better connectivity such as USB3 and multicard reader, but Android tablets are coming out with 2GB of RAM. SSD drives again I'll concede.

I don't see why this should reach $1000 and above.

Seriously? You do realise this is literally ultrabook/laptop hardware in a tablet. Do you see any iPads/Android tablets with i5 CPU's? How about 4GB RAM? Which i bet this will have minimum. This will also likely have a real mSATA based SSD with near desktop speeds. Unlike the basic slow nand storage found in all current tablets.

If this is over £800 i'd still get it. I dont look at it as a tablet, it's more than that.
