*** Microsoft Windows 11 Thoughts & Discussion Thread ***

What CPU is required to run windows 11.

I'm currently on windows 10 and it says I can't upgrade.
The system requirements are here:

The list of supported CPUs is here (next to Windows 11 click either amd or intel):

You can use WhyNotWin11 to view the reasons why your PC doesn't meet the Windows 11 system requirements. There may be multiple reasons.

It is possible to do a clean install in a way that bypasses some system requirements, if you want info on that just ask, and post your screenshot from WhyNotWin11 so I can see what your issues are.

Some recent update has re-enabled OneDrive showing in various places... and I'm back to constant notifications about automatic sample submission being disabled.

MS seriously ******* me off.

Just installed 11 for the first time in about 18 months and was utterly baffled at why apps were taking 10 seconds or more to launch after a cold boot. Some apps like Firefox started instantly so I figured it was something "security" related. And sure enough, it was this complete and utter bollards.

Turned it off and normal behaviour is restored. What the ****? :/

I don't personally have a problem with it as such, I do have a problem if the end user doesn't have full control over it including ability to fully disable.

For some people or in certain security environments it could be very useful especially when it comes to auditing.

This is for the kind of people who are not remotely computer literate and haven’t a clue what they are downloading let alone installing.

It appears to be controllable via GPO and opt in only but how long before malware has the ability to enable it and harvest your data?

Yeah I have it off due to some really odd behaviour with it - I can't remember specifics now or if it still does it.
It's basically a protection racket. If your application is not digitally signed, this is what happens. Digital certificates can apparently cost upwards of $500 a year. Not an official figure, I've heard indie devs mention the costs on other forums before.

Previously, the only downside to not being signed was an annoying prompt when running an installer which could be dismissed once and that was it. But this behaviour is far worse. It makes it look like your pc is dying or something else terrible is going on.

so I’ve had a bash at trying without windows for the last couple of weeks and using Linux. Yes there has been a few setups and jiggerypokery to get some programs like davinci resolve working but ultimately I’ve managed without windows so far and it’s been ok. Looking at the last few weeks of posts it’s only cemented more my thought that I want out of the windows environment for general home use. I really thought win10 was on a good track , but 11 has really got it wrong imho.

I made the move some time ago and I'm really enjoying this thread.

I was waited for this since 2015 so how soon? I dont think it will be 24H2 feature update because it was feature completed months ago back in May, found no mentions of old control panel deprecated in changelog list. I guess it will be Windows 11 25H2 feature update and Windows 12.

I still have to dip into the old Control Panel quite a bit and/or it is just easier than using the new Settings... so hope they pull their heads out their behinds and actually do something about the situation but I bet it'll be another situation where they do half a job and then have to reinstate it under pressure, then try to quietly pull it again later still without putting the effort in to make a good and comprehensive replacement.

Sadly far too much I do where Linux isn't an option - I'm a little rusty these days but still know Debian/Ubuntu fairly well, I've never found the UI quite as streamlined as Windows either - even with significantly building my own customised windows system on top of Fluxbox/Blackbox.

Yea I was like that for quite a time but it's really come on loads.

The UI is fine if you use something like KDE and spend a little time tweaking - it's far more customisable than Windows ever was. Once it's set like you want it, at least you can be sure that it'll stay that way.

Gaming on Linux is so much better these days. I still have a bootable Windows SSD just for gaming but I can't remember the last time I used it. If I need to run a Windows app it's usually very simple to run it in a bottle.

Urgh the settings panel isn't a patch on control panel in terms of functionality. Even basic things like being able to leave a control panel open while you check something else - impossible with the stupid single window interface of the new settings App.

Even things like the network panel are still impossible to use for anything more involved than setting the IP address

Agreed. To me there isn't that much wrong with the way the old control panels functionally worked, or even their layouts ... and I'd argue that the new settings panel has made things worse in that respect where you are thrown between the 2 types back and forth.

I think a big aspect is that a lot of the control panels still sit on the old UI, old fonts, etc etc and this jarrs against the new UI. Now I will admit, whilst I understand simple programming basics, I am no developer. That said, I do ask myself is it really that hard to make a new front end UI for all those existing panels using the newer design language, but that call the same functions underneath.

The underlying code is already existing ... you're just skinning it with new UI ... I dont understand how that can take so long to do.
