*** Microsoft Windows 11 Thoughts & Discussion Thread ***

Not exactly a Windows 11 issue but just seen the secure boot compromised issue, also slightly older but new TPM exploit found.

I'm still on 10 Pro but it has been offering me a free "upgrade" to 11 for a while. Doesn't say which version
Based on some of the posts here as a normal/every day user that just wants to browse, do emails, watch the odd video or light gaming I can't see a reason to fix something which isn't broken
Maybe next year.. I miss 7 Ultimate

Still got a year or so until Windows 10 goes EOL (14th of October 2025) so still no rush.

You will most likely get the current version thats out when you decide to update and then most likely further windows updates during install (if you keep the internet running) or once its done

As the question of W10 vs W11 gaming performance crops up now and again...

The TLDW of it is that while the initially release of W11 was mostly on par with 10 it seems to have fallen behind in some games, by +10% in some cases.

That was always the case Win 10 ran slower then 7 which ran slower than XP ad finitum. The reason as we all know is all the extra crap MS piles in that weighs it down. New faster hardware, new excuse to add even more crap to bog it down. Wash, rinse, repeat.

What version of Win11 did they use in this video, and was it created by a 'cut the crap' tool that clears all sorts of shiz out of your build?

Windows 11, isn't bad, its all of the additional telemetry and stuff that slows it down...

You could watch it to get your answer. Having said that IIRC the latest versions and no it was not created by a 'cut the crap' tool because that's not something your typical gamer does.

That seems to be a bit of a contradictory statement, it's not bad but stuff slows it down.

Or don't ignore it and wait until a third-party does some more benchmarks on 24H2 to see if it the supposed improvements actually improve anything.

You can probably ignore everything the video finds in relation to Windows 11 vs 10 for gaming because:

If Windows 11 becomes more responsive as a result, it might be time to start considering using 11 over 10. But I'm against the general UI and usability of 11, not to mention it's bloat and it's constant pandering to AI.

It would be nice if you had proper Home and Pro versions, Home, comes with all the fluff installed, Pro, installs nothing but the basics, you can then use 'Add/Remove' and add in the things that you want, it should always be an option to add, rather than a pain to remove..

StartAllBack has been updated with 24H2 support and some new stuff:

Version 3.8 31 Jul 2024
  • Fully reimplemented taskbar!
  • Shy autohide taskbar perk
  • Never, hide labels combine button setting
  • Reorder task thumbnails by drag&drop
  • Reduced taskbar resource usage, improved responsiveness
  • Pixel-perfect task icons
  • All-new taskbar animations
  • Support for latest 23H2/24H2 builds. Requred for August Windows updates!

I would rather that and pay for it. No telemetry, ads, bloat etc..

I used to pre-order Windows when a new version came out so I had it on release day (right up to Windows 8), and even beta tested a couple of versions. Windows 10 was where they started losing me and after a year of using it I finally switched to Linux, and haven't looked back. Gaming could be an issue when I first switched, but as I played WoW most of the time anyway I didn't have to worry much as that worked pretty well in Wine. Nowadays you couldn't pay me to install a Microsoft OS (other than in a VM just to see what else they've done to ruin the experience). Shame really.

Absolutely, if you are paying for an OS then you shouldn't be getting adverts...
I always find it funny getting news / adverts on our work machines. Seems this won't be changing with the latest version - we're in the process of having 11 rolled out to the entire business
