*** Microsoft Windows 11 Thoughts & Discussion Thread ***

I best start looking for an alternative to TCP/IP :D
You mean like IPv4 and IPv5/6. :)
Using iOS for shares, FE File Explorer doesn't talk to my server if its not enabled.
Fair but SMB1 is pretty insecure, IIRC SMB1 has historically been one of the biggest attack vectors for internet connected devices.

e: Is there no way you can upgrade to SMB2/3? I spent 5-10min last night trying to find out if iOS for shares and FE File Explorer have a setting for a minimum SMB version but the documentation seems pretty thin on the ground when it comes to iOS and FE File Explore. :(

This has just happened to me.

Was my normal background this morning, but now has changed.

My last Windows update was on the 8th. (W11 PRO 23h2)

One of the things I really hate lately is not all features/changes are activated immediately after updates so it can make troubleshooting tricky when something goes wrong after an unexpected change.

I honestly hope the developers get a massive dose of their own medicine in life.

I'm wondering if theres something else going off, maybe a difference in iOS and iPadOS as it works on my phone fine...
App settings are the same on both devices..

Decided to dabble in Linux today.

This evening, I'm back on Windows with a clean install  Windows isn't that bad after all :p At least on Windows everything (mostly) just works.

Windows is *****

Windows 10 fairly *****
Windows 11 22H2 system crippler
Windows 23H2 wipes things like sound cards out completely
Windows 24H2 cards not detectable system unstable

Bloody hate Microsoft

It took me multiple tries at Linux before I finally ditched Windows. Gaming was probably the biggest factor but also it was just easier as I knew Windows. Windows 10 was the catalyst for me as it just p***ed me off that much so I actually spent a whole month getting to know Linux and refused to go back. I'm so glad I did because now there's no way I'd ever use Windows again outside of work, and gaming has come so far on Linux that there are hardly any games I can't play.

Gave it a good chance then. ;)

I gave it as much time as I could stand  Day off, so probably about 8 hours in total. That's how long it took me to realise that I was just making life difficult for myself.

I ran into a bunch of issues, none of which I had the first idea how to fix. I sorted most of them. But still had a resolution bug which persisted across both distros that I tried. I couldn't set my main monitor to 3440x1440. Doing so on the desktop would cause the monitor to lose signal. And in games, it would result in the game crashing. I couldn't find a fix for this. It was at this point, having spent the best part of a day messing with Linux, that I realised it would have been easier to just stick with Windows & turn off all of the telemetry and tracking features...

I'll give it another try in the near future, once I've built my new desktop.

Yea, what i said was in jest as i know how jarring it can be when you've (i) grew up on Windows, even how the file system is laid out on Linux did my head in when i first gave it a try, still does to this day. :)

Hmm one I've not seen before, was updating my Lenovo Legion Go and it brought up a new style of "We've got an update for you" message box with prompts to restart now or at specific time, etc. over a fullscreen application... really not acceptable.

Setup a Linux VM, that way you can have a play to get used to it or just use it for some thing and windows for other things.

anyone have stuttering in windows 11? can be on the desktop/in a game. all the time really. especially annoying when playing a game though.

ive recently done a complete clean install of windows too.

cant seem to trouble shoot what might be causing it.

Where both installs on 24H2?

Could try an install with 23H2 and see if this is any different. Heard 24H2 has caused some issues for a lot users so this would be the first thing I would try

I’ll have to double check. It was the latest iso off the Microsoft website so assume it’s 24.

Will give the reinstall a go though.

If you have a spare drive you can quickly sling that in and use that rather than using your current drive and if its the same then you just swap over the drives again.

May save you some time

What drive have you got?

Have read that some WD NVME dramless drives (SN580 and SN770) have issues with Windows 11 24H2, but think that is BSOD not stuttering.

Also turning off Fast Startup may help.
