If you were to present people with the new (Old?) logo I think a lot less people would recognise it compared to people being shown the old wavy looking logo.
That design looks utter turd.

Well, I like it. Clean, functional, effective. What Microsoft is (trying) to promote.
It's recognizable
Windows 8 is anything but functional.
I have used it for a few days in a virtual machine and I still can't stand it.

The wavy logo is windows, not Microsoft.
It's recognizable in a square as its a window in a recognizable colour configuration.
It's perfect for people who want simple access to their stuff though. Parents who just want their photos, websites, etc. I
?
Although his logos may be interpreted as simplistic, Rand was quick to point out in A Designer’s Art that “ideas do not need to be esoteric to be original or exciting." His American Broadcasting Company trademark, created in 1961, then used by ABC-TV in the fall of 1962, epitomizes that ideal of minimalism while proving Rand’s point that a logo “cannot survive unless it is designed with the utmost simplicity and restraint.”
So why not just adopt the Windows logo as the Microsoft logo? It's a lot more recognisable than the new one.
