Middle aged life

They say that life begins at 40, but I disagree. It's not what it's cracked up to me.

Since age 40 (I'm now 47):

- half of my family have died, down from 10 to 5 family members
- still single
- COVID pandemic happened
- the body starts falling apart
- developed cataracts in my only eye, 4 trips to operating theatre
- can no longer go on roller coasters due to the above
- work is absolutely garbage and pays 9p over minimum wage

I know I could do something about the last point, but it took me a year to find my current job so I can't be doing with going through the job hunting process again and losing another year of my life.

One good point I can think of being 40+:

- old clubbing franchises from the 90s and early 00s have stepped back post-COVID e.g. Godskitchen, Cream, Gatecrasher, Ministry of Sound, Frantic, Sundissential, Insomniacz, Passion, Amnesia to name a few. It attracts a good mixed crowd of 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s and clubbing is now at the best I've ever known it. Clubbing has replaced theme parks as my hobby.

I turned 40 last year, and had kind of assumed I'd missed the boat and would never have kids. Last month, my missus found out she's pregnant and I am absolutely crapping myself about the prospect and responsibility of being a dad. And I'm not sure my aging knees are going to cope...

You'll be fine. ;) I was 44 when my first kid was born last April, turned 45 just four days later.

Congrats and enjoy it.

Man youre gonna be fine!

Tired. Seriously. But you will enjoy every single minute of it, mostly in retrospect for the first 6 months!

Completely rebuilt my life at 43, fit, strong, x4'd my earnings - feel better than ever, but also a bit frightened, I put all my skill points into career + hobbies and nothing else, so i'm playing catchup in some respects. Haven't been in a relationship with anyone for 8 years, which I was fine with until recently.. (having the complexion and looks of a 34 year old helps..)

Absolutely no idea what the next 2-3 years holds, priority is just to stay fit and healthy - but I've missed out on a lot of stuff, whilst simultaneously feeling like i'm now hitting my prime.

42 here, I don't believe in this mid-crisis BS. Life is better for me now physically, mentally and financially compared to 10 years ago.

Had my health check done when I turned 40 and I'm in better shape than most people younger than me. Yeah, handovers can take two days instead of one but I knocked that down years ago. Less reasons for me to drink alcohol as I get older.

I work with people in their late 20's freaking out about turning 30! They need to relax, get off social media and enjoy life while they are still young enough.

Life in jail sounds like fun!

your only old if you let your self feel old.

I'm now try to catch up on a lot of areas, including relationships.

Threads like this always remind me of a Terry Pratchett quote - “Inside every 80 year old is an 18 year old wondering what the hell happened” It’s true!
Genuinely terrifying.

Working 5 days a week and having two off probably plays a huge part in that.

Running out of new experiences, or not being able to afford the ones you have not yet had.

Doing the same thing day after day, for such a long period of time takes its toll.

I imagine there is a decent number of OCUKers who fall into this bracket.
I'm in my early 40s, about to tip into mid-40s. What sort of mid-life crisis did you have, and how did you deal with it?

I was once all about socialising, travelling, adventure. Now my favourite place is my shed, I'm considering buying a an enormous 'dooer-upper' house, I'm looking at shares in a private aeroplane, and I feel it is essential I start metal detecting. I think I'm giving my wife the ick.
couple years off 40 here,

Same, I was all about socialising etc, now I'm just like i'm happier being in the gym and i'd like a few personal projects I can work on with my hands.

I do want some adventure though, i'd like to do a self build camper van and do weekend trips into nature etc.
