Midweek Football Thread 20 - 22 *spoilers*

To be fair it was goalkeeping.

Not really, complete lack of urgency in closing down Pirlo, should never have had the space, ever. 2nd goal, no one covering Pato's run at all, keeper made a mistake went in thinking he was in the box, pulled his hands away at the last second, but where were the defenders. Same for last goal, defense no where to be seen, ignored Pato completely giving him a full 5yards of space. Casillas didn't cover himself in glory but better defending and none of the three goals would have occured.

Was also often both Marcelo and Ramos giving the ball away with terrible passing while commited way way up the field that left the defense in such disarray. Their final ball/decision when they get forward is so bad it doesn't make up for them being bad defensively, have no idea how either ever got highly rated as defenders.

LOL that manager must be getting sacked in the morning, Atletico are notoriously fickle, at one point it was 13 in 8 years or something stupid like that, even worse than Spurs.

Casillas just like... fell apart!

Bizzare really, he's normally really good. Still think Real are very good going forward but do look a little weak in defense.

Good win for Chelsea!

Really loved the shot of VDS hugging a injured and little Fabio :p

To be fair, a LOT of keepers become seemingly awful when they have no confidence in their defenders. A ball you'd normally leave to a Terry and you are 99% certain he'll head it clear, when you lose confidence you'll run 20 yards arrive late and flap at the ball causing all kinds of problems, because you have no confidence he'll clear the header.

I'd say Reina is suffering from that, while he did well to punch out the corner for first goal, and get the follow up's, if he had confidence he would have been on his line and probably caught the 1st shot easily rather than parrying it.

To be fair the first goal is being a little harsh, it was a superb shot that no one was expecting and was right in the corner, it was a hard save to make for anyone. THe second one, he had to rush out because the defense was no where to be seen, 3rd wasn't his fault at all, the dissallowed goal, he had 3 defenders in his way and Ramos jumped into Casillas.

EDIT:- Didn't Athletico get thumped at the weekend aswell, or maybe the game before? yup 3-0 to Osasuna, and looks like 7 played, 1 win, 3 draws, 3 losses, almost conceded double what they've scored, not good at all.

Casillas shouldn't have come out of his box for the second goal, awful mistake. 1st was a great, great shot and the last unstoppable

Not so sure, is it really better to know Pato will get the ball and give him time to setup the perfect shot while staying in goal, or rush out and maybe get the ball before him? With no defenders to get to the ball first I think he did the right thing, the only mistake was seemingly he dived in thinking he could take the ball with his hands, when he realised he was outside the box he took his hands away but was already in the wrong position, that was a mistake, but rushing out was the right choice.

But keepers with no confidence in their defence make more mistakes, its normal, its just so wrong to blame him for all the goals.

Nah, Casillas vs Pato in a foot race? Casillas should have known better, Pato was the fastest man on the field.

Thats irrelevant, his speed doesn't matter, he got to the ball before Pato, or about the same time, just he went in thinking he could use his hands as you clearly see him change his mind.

Its better to hopefully make him miscontrol, or even clear the ball, than just let him collect it unimpeded, run at the goal and shoot when he wants.

Remember the ball's running away from Pato and too Casillas, if he put his foot in rather than start to go in with his hands, that ball could have ended up anywhere. Leaving him on his own, it was almost a certain goal.

WAs such an odd game though, I still think Milan were by far the worse team for the majority of the game, Real Madrid just didn't have enough creativity to create better chances with Kaka getting everything wrong. Oh well, thats why you've got to love football, till the equaliser it was a stupidly dull game, then it was mistake after mistake by both sides, just more crucial ones from Real. One of the better final 30 mins in a game this season, maybe not on pure quality, but entertainment and suspense.

EDIT:- any liverpool fans, how did Aquilani do, crap, good, injured again?

Glad Pato had another good game. He's an awesome talent and one that's often overlooked when talking about the best young players around at the time. Would love to see him in the Premiership, would love to see him at Liverpool :(

That Dida mistake gets funnier everytime I see it, basically knee'ed it out of his own hands with both knees :D

yup, well he went to bounce it but threw it at his own leg, it was truly retarded, even his attempt to get it, it looked like he could reach it but he flailed around like a blind man. Raul doing what a striker should, being ready for anything.

I still don't understand why goalkeepers bounce the ball in those situations, you're just asking for a mistake to happen for no reason, kick the damn thing.

Got to wonder when Pacheco is going to get his first team chance given how average/poor Ngog and Voronin have been. Hopefully we'll see him against Arsenal in midweek.

His 2 free-kicks today were stunning and hopefully he will play vs Arsenal, he was due to play vs Leeds but picked up a knock.

A word of warning though, N'Gog looks like a world beater when he plays with the reserves and Pacheco still needs to bulk up.

A lazy performance by Arsenal, really should have finished them off earlier, live and learn, yet again.

DM, stop ranting about Song, he had a good game, you make yourself look like a fool with your blind hatred for him.

I think DM just copies and pastes his answers into every single Arsenal related topic. I am surprised he didnt **** off Denilson by mistake.

Song, Diaby, Denilson = BAD

Walcott = Rubbish winger who cant cross

Eboue = GOD

Just put that from now on instead of your three page attack on the same players every game. Even when Diaby scores it is considered a fluke or an easy goal. I honestly think if he got 10 goals in a game DM would say the opposition were bad which made him look better

DM style rant over lol

JUDGE ME ON THE CLEANLINESS OF OUR KIT, INSISTS BENITEZ
21-10-09

LIVERPOOL coach Rafael Benitez last night called for his team's immaculate kit to be the benchmark for their success.

'I've had these socks for 30 years and they still look brand new' said the Liverpool manager
Brushing aside the club's 2-1 defeat to Lyon, Benitez insisted his squad were now the cleanest and best turned out in the Champion's League.

He said: "When a panel of ordinary housewives assesses the summer freshness of our socks the table will begin to look very different my friends. Oh yes.

"I have it on good authority that Fiorentina do not use fabric softener and their spin cycle is sluggish at best.

"And when Lyon hold their tops up to the kitchen window on a sunny day they simply expose the greyness of their whites."

He added: "While other managers have fallen for the idiotic fantasy of washing everything at 40 degrees, I have pursued a policy of 60 degrees as well as a vigorous pre-wash. That is how you get outstanding results, every time."

Benitez said his team's impressive record would continue on Sunday against Manchester United when increasingly demanding consumers would see for themselves Sir Alex Ferguson's abject failure to remove the stubborn stains from Wayne Rooney's groin.

Liverpool's assistant manager Sammy Lee said: "Don't tell anyone, but I'm going to manage the club in secret from now on."

Elsewhere it was a bad night for British clubs as Rangers were beaten 4-1 after admitting they did not know they were allowed to include a goalkeeper, while Arsenal conceded a late equaliser after forgetting they were playing in their away kit.
