Midweek Football Thread. Champions League. 29/30 *spoliers*

That move in the first half where Cesc hit the bar would have gone in if we had played 4-4-2! FACT.

Song played well again.

Yup, except for the only real chances they had in the game all coming from stupid freekicks he gave away hacking at people from behind, for no reason, sure, a great game. Or maybe, for the 8th game in a row him being the reason for inviting pressure on the team needlessly is NOT a good thing?

They were utter, utter crap, and yet Song gave away freekicks, wasn't helpful going forwards, and didn't easily mop up their attacks like Gilberto used to. What exactly was it Song did well, bad passing, multiple freekicks conceding aside? Was it being under very little pressure against a incredibly poor team? Wow, well done that man.

Well Liverpool were given a lesson in the first half and then had a good go second half but failed to do the business.

Lack depth in our squad, Aurelio was awful in midfield and Lucas didn't do too well.

Sunday is a huge game, let's just hope they are more up for it than they were 1st half today.

Vermimator really looks the real deal some of his pin point passing along the ground was superb, what with his goal threat and not forgetting his composed defending i think we got a bargain. Rosicky looking very good too, love how he is getting stuck in.

Song gave away few free kicks admittedly but 9/10 its to stop a break etc. I don't think he had a bad game but Diaby needs a visit to the glue factory after his last 5 or so performances.

He does indeed, if you imagined Mr Tickle had those wobbly arms for legs then that's Diaby. I just think he's been pants in every game I've seen him play. Even when he scored that double, both were gifts.

A good game - but boy did we miss too many chances first half - the guys behind us were going nuts lol

So pleased to grab the goals though - late as ever but better than nothing :)

Great atmosphere too - the away supporters were making a right racket - even after the goals they were still chanting and clapping away ... good stuff!

Their best chance came from a corner.

Song committed 3 fouls, the same as Vermaelen.

Song is strong, holds on to the ball well, breaks up attacks and off loads the ball well. He's a defensive midfielder, he will give away freekicks, he's supposed to.

There's no point speaking to him about DM's. He thinks Scholes is UTD's best DM and a DM doesn't have to tackle. Oh how I laughed! :D

I went to one of my locals to watch "Rafa's Reds" (well thats what one of the flags on the wall called them) - it was quite amusing how rowdy they where getting at the end shouting for every little thing

Two very decent goals in the 1st half which the home team completely obliterated the theoretically more experienced / quality team. That stadium must have been one hell of a place to play in, have to admit. Maybe Fiorentina didnt attack as much in the 2nd half, but not really sure Liverpool deserved anything out of it either

Foul in the build up to the only goal Liverpool actually scored was totally correct (maybe it would have been let go in the EPL, but it isnt surprising in the CL tbf) and the penalty call was no way clear enough , and angle the ball left the field indicated a fair tackle

Ref was a little whistle happy - but this favoured both teams evenly it seemed

Should be an interesting group, if Lyon and Fiorentina can play as well as they did last night in a number of games it could get very tastey

Sorry but I don't think Song was that good last night. Seems to make too many stupid decisions. He seems to be very technically gifted at times but whether its just his concentration thats off or what, he misplaces too many passes that he just shouldn't miss.

He's only going to get better with time and games but at the moment if Arsenal are going to be chasing titles, I think they need to buy in an established midfielder for that position.

I like Diaby too, but he is far too inconsistent to warrant a place in the team. He really needs to get his arse in gear.

there best chance came from a corner that was a DIRECT result of a freekick that song gave away by fouling a player 45 yards from goal with our entire defence still to go through, it was needless and reckless.

Song isn't strong, he doesn't hold onto the ball well, he doesn't break up attacks well at all and he doesn't offload the ball well, hell, he even managed to seemingly tackle himself on the edge of their box when he got the ball late in the game.

Its pretty simple, we played a team incapable of really making himself look poor, against teams capable of doing so, he's looked a joke of a footballer, being completely and utterly incapable of breaking up the play or stopping chances being created. His truly pathetic attempt at a tackle on RIchards against city, he telegraphs his tackles, is incredibly easy to go around which is why every single foul he concedes is a kick from behind, after he's been passed. The ONE thing a DM needs the ability to do, is not let people pass him, he needs to hold them up and stop an attack, he is completely incapable of that, being beaten every time someones up against him and fouling them to stop the attack is not what a DM does.

But lets do what we've done for 5 years, praise people for not screwing up too badly against crap teams, and forgive them for being inept against better teams, which costs us every year, thats surely the way to improve. Not spot your weaknesses, improve them and have a chance at winning the big games and titles.

HInchey, the problem with Diaby is he's a classic one game wonder, for all his injuries he's played a lot of games for us now in 4 years, he's not put in more than 2 great performances a season so far, he's not inconsistant its just that any player on the planet can have a great game, sometimes every bad decision gets lucky and it all works and the ball drops perfectly for you all game. WHen Diaby is bad, he's one of the worst in the league, when he's great, he's one of the best, but we're lucky to get one great game a year, he's just not lived up to the potential, no one at his level/age improves dramatically. Same with Song, he's played first team at various clubs for several years, he's at his final level, he'll improve very very little from now on and he's no where near good enough. Of course he'll have the odd great game, of course he'll make some tackles, but he'll also never consistantly be good enough to hold off the top 6 or help us win a Euro title, he's just not that player.

The only improvement he's shown in two years, is moving out of defence to a less important position, missed tackle in midfield, foul, nothing, same thing at right back or centre back and its a goal or a great chance to score at least.

Just look at Utd, Carrick, Fletcher, Park, even Giggs and Scholes, the first 4 rarely if ever "shine" but they chances of them having a poor game are almost nothing. A dull and boring game maybe but a game they foul constantly and give away the ball every two seconds is almost non existant. LIkewies Giggs and Scholes played LOADS of games last year where they didn't look at all fantastic, but they weren't close to terrible. They were consistantly above a certain level, those players are fairly rare and FAR FAR more important than a player who can randomly have a great or a terrible game. Fletcher, Park, Carrick, Anderson played lots of games in a team that won the title, its not about being truly brilliant, its about consistancy and rarely if ever having a terrible game. We don't need the best DM in the world, we need one that won't have a terrible game 20 times a year.

Actually, when you stop talking out your ass, I said Scholes was infinately better as a DM than Carrick or Anderson, who were being discussed. Every time last year Scholes and Carrick were a better pair than Carrick and Anderson, Scholes played the withdrawn role in that pair every single time.

AS for not tackling, I can't name a single world class DM who spends his time on his ass, Gilberto, Makelele, Diarra, Vieira in his day, Gattuso and most others spend most of their time on their feet, the job is block angles and SLOWING attacks, its not to over commit yourself and make yourself easy to get pass, here's a hint, someone on the floor with no control of himself is easy to go around, someone standing in front of you, in full control, able to track your runs and get in your way, isn't.

None of them aren't capable of tackling and all will, when needed, but they don't instantly jump to the floor at people, if you think they do, you're blind.

He started a massive.....................

12 games!

Whats you're point? Out of the games he played, he was average in more than he was exceptional, but he was never bad.

But if you want to be pedantic, add Giggs and Scholes minutes on the pitch together and tell me it was an insignificant part of the season?

My point? I thought that was obvious

12 games is not as you said

'LOADS OF GAMES'

Anyway. on to more important issues. Just put £10 on Chelsea, Manchester United, Milan and Bordeaux to win. £26 back : |
