Midweek Football Thread. *spoilers* 25-27

While I think most people would agree that diving should be able to be punished after the game, the fact that Eduardo has been singled out is wrong.

Agree.

Thats pathetic to be honest. I've spent half my life screaming at diving spanish and italians in major tournaments and now all of a sudden it's something they need to single out?

I totally agree something needs to be done about diving but why single this one incident out. Make a statement that all dives will be looked at from now on and announce what the punishment will be. Then while they are at it do the same for feigning injury.

This is in any way only acceptable if precedant is now set.

Though I reckon they're shooting themselves in the foot with this one. They think they can hand out a punishment in retrospect for what ended up and what was easily predicted to be a pretty meaningless non match changing situation. They're going to lack the cherries to do it in a much bigger game with a 0-0 situation.

To be honest it'll be easy for obvious ones. What for players that do it really well? I can think of at least a few Premiership that simulate heavily and even with a replay they sometimes look convincing.

How will the Spanish and Italian leagues cope as well lol? Not only is it more prevalent over there but those are the leagues that Platini et al adore.

I would agree with that.

It has to start somewhere though - doesn't really matter who it is. I would genuinely take that opinion if it was one of our players (Liverpool) having been caught.

It definitely does need to start somewhere. But, do you REALLY think UEFA will carry this on for every diver? I don't think so.

It's going to be extremely difficult to keep a track of but the fact that there is now pressure on the subject will, at the very least, plant a seed of doubt into the minds of those who dive.

Sometimes there isn't even that seed of doubt given the lax punishment handed out, if any.

I know this has to be stamped out of our game and what not i just think like some1 has said previously that they are making a rod for there own back.Pederson last season against arsenal would've had a two match ban if this was done then.

I'm just thinking whats next, maybe changing scorelines if for example a goal is scored and the officials miss it or replaying the game. Oh wait that doesnt matter as it was ONLY Palace ;)

This.

There is no way they should be singling out Eduardo unless they intend to do the same for all players that attemp to deceive the referee at any stage during the game.

I've actually stated all along that the way I feel divers and cheats should be dealt with is after the game. If they are found to have dived during the game to get another player booked, that player gets a one match ban and the other player's yellow card is taken away. If a player dives to try and win a penalty, successful or not, he receives a one match ban.

I really do feel that is the best way to get rid of it from the game whilst still keeping the excitement and pace of the game going without video replays interrupting it at all.

I think UEFA are in a difficult position on this one. On the one hand, people will say that its a knee jerk reaction and why single Eduardo out. Then on the other hand people will say you have to start somewhere.

My take on it is that if a player can be sent off for a professional foul and stopping a player scoring, then so should a diving player be sent off if a goal comes as a result of their actions. All punishments are fair and equal.

I am not confident that if the same action came up in the group stages of a meaningless end of group qualifying game, that they would arrive at the same decision.

What they should have done is acknowledged it was a dive and use that as an example to the game. If any more diving/simulation or whatever goes on then it carries an automatic two game ban as does a sending off. The punishment for diving is disproportiante compared to other offences.

A precedent for BLATANT diving has already been set by UEFA and I suspect a similar 2 match suspension will be carried out. This was due to a BLATANT dive by Saulius
Mikoliunas to win a penalty in an international as Scotland played Lithuania

PARIS (AFP) — Lithuanian international Saulius Mikoliunas has been suspended for two matches after being found guilty of diving in the Euro 2008 qualifying match against Scotland, UEFA said Thursday.

The Hearts player will miss the matches against France on October 17 and Ukraine on November 17 after being found guilty of "deceiving the referee (by diving)" during the 3-1 loss to Scotland in Glasgow on September 9.

Lithuania scored from the penalty which was awarded in the 61st minute by Slovenian referee Damir Skomina after Mikoliunas went to ground.

Wenger is good....."having seen the pictures again, nothing is conclusive"

If more bans for diving are giving out on a consistent basis, then I don't mind. But you just knew the idiots at UEFA won't do this. Who thinks Ronaldo would be banned for diving? Platini would not allow it, that man (and blatter) need removing and replaced with competent people.

Exactly.

He came out in the press conference saying Eduardo went down because of his broken leg! The point being if he was expecting to get injured jump over the goalkeeper like what Nor's saying.

How may times have we seen players jump out of tackles by vaulting over the player? Not going down like he's upended you :/ That's simulation in my book and should be punished accordingly.

Eduardo went down because he wanted to win a penalty, ******** was he avoiding an injury.

The clamp down on diving had to start somewhere, I said it a few pages back. Just happened to be Arsenal this time, don't think that they'll keep it up though.

Mr Wanger, can defend Eduardo all he wants, did he not come out and say that divers should face a ban ?

Be pleased that UEFA are actively doing something to combat diving.

So much stupidity in this thread.
The reason Eduardo is being banned is due to Scotlands clout within UEFA.

This ******** proves it
