I just cant get my head around what possible fun you could get from this "game".

In it, you build and mine. These arent games, these are JOBS. What fun can you have from doing chores?

Anyway if Im missing something then I digress, someone PLEASE fill me in with whats so great about it.

It's a sandbox game, you can do what you want in it. If you don't like or "get" sandbox games then no, it's not for you.

Want to build a giant penis and balls from different coloured wool? Minecraft will let you.

Want to spend hours crafting music boxes and finely tuning them to a song then spending a long time linking them up with redstone circuitry at the right timing? Minecraft will let you.

Want to make a hideously complex minecart system? Minecraft will let you.

You can literally do pretty much anything you want, and for some people that's good. Not everything needs a plot, and storylines. Some people just want to do what they want. And that's Minecraft.

I've played other sandbox games and at least in those theres some cause and effect going on from your actions, this just seems futile.

tnt is fun, redstone is complex to learn but fun. mining for precious ores to trade is fun and so is the community spirit :)

TBH what's the point in any game? Just because you enjoy something doesn't mean there is any moire 'point' to it than something you don't enjoy. Unless of course the point is that you enjoy it.

LEGO.

I find myself spending hours making random stuff latest was a forest and treehouse until my friend filled it with tnt as a joke.

I can see what the OP is getting at, I sort of think along the same lines but another part of me is actually saying try it so there is some sort of appeal to play for me. Its just not enough right now but could possibly change.

On a seperate note, the huge minecraft thread is an absolute quality read for entertainment, think thats possibly whats causing me to consider trying it :D

It's like a lego version of Neighbours ;) :D

As stated, lego!

I didn't get it. I slagged off my mate who began playing it ages ago. Then about two weeks ago I gave it a shot as I was fascinated at its soaring popularity. In moments I was hooked and had my own server up for my mates and we've created our own mini-town and have massive laughs just mining and discovering huge cave complexes and dungeons. You WILL learn to fear the dark...many moments in MC are incredibly scary due to the atmosphere it creates.

It may look crap, but under those blocks is a very engrossing game. As this PC Gamer chap found out when he did his MC Experiment.

At the moment I get the most enjoyment just from discovering caves and exploring them. Daft as it sounds it must approach what it feels like for a caver to find a real life cavern and to plot its depths, especially those in the game with underground waterfalls and the like. Its the addictive "what's down that dark passage, how far does it go?" style thing going on. You don't even find anything massively worthwhile either, maybe a few outcrops of rare ore but nothing special, its hard to explain. Spiders are a pain in the arse though, could cheerfully do without them.

I was the same as the OP for a long time. Just did not see the point.

Sandbox games didn't appeal to me either.

Basically if someone had said to me the aim is just not to BUILD but to SURVIVE it would have made more sense. You have to survive because there are monsters that come at night to get you. If you haven't built a good enough place they'd find their way in. If you haven't built a strong enough place they'll blow holes in it and destroy it.

Your best weapon is light. Torches. Light stuff up to keep them away, if they do come close enough there are other weapons you can make - swords, bows and arrows, tnt traps to let them have it.

So you have the ability to build things using the resources of the land? Fine. First you'll build a hut. But then in the next day you'll have more time and confidence so you'll want to build something a little bigger and bolder... so you'll build a house. After a while you'll get bored of that and will think of building a stone castle. Maybe with a ditch and a moat. And maybe a throne room with a library and burning torches. Maybe an underground dungeon. You'll give yourself projects. All the while trying to keep the monsters at night out who could come in at any moment.

And remember that each world is randomly generated. No-one will have the same world as you. You have deserts; green fields with lush vegetation; maybe some snowy high maintains with streams and pines. The same principle applies though, you have to survive wherever you are.

Now if someone had said that to me at first... I would have liked it better. And since playing I have build not only forts but large wooden oriental temples with pagodas, water features, wheat farms.... and even a strip club with black obsidian walls.

Watch this short video and it will maybe seem more appealing. You just carry on doing stuff, it doesn't get old.

One thing that appealed to me was that the randomly generated world is never ending. After a certain point on the map it'll randomly generate areas on the fly they'll consist of various climates. This is our server map so far after 9 days. The top desert chunk was recently generated and features huge caverns beneath.

Image if something like Oblivions world had that feature - never ending endlessly generated terrain.

And it literally is never-ending. Tefal walked for 9hrs on our server to get to a new spo far away from spawn :/

If it had awesome high textured graphics, I would have bought this instantly.

Right now it looks like pixel puke to me :x
