Pre-generated a 1.8 pre-release word to get an idea of the changes to the terrain generator. In almost all cases the ratio of water to land is significantly greater, NPC villages appear quite rare, underground passages seem to be very much overdone.

The renders below are of a 3000x3000 block world, by comparison the OcUK server is 7500x7500 which is about 6 times the area.

Certainly seemed that way when playing. I.e. spawning at the bottom of an ocean, finding only 1 tiny island and nothing else in the distance. Watching chunks load and seeing chunk after chunk of abandoned mines/wooden supports.

Think they need to tone back on both really.

Some of you may spot the obvious omission, where is the snow biomes? You can find plenty of the trees associated with the winter biomes but not the biomes themselves. One of the nice touches however is the meandering rivers.

Given the rarity of the NPC villages you could be on a SSP map for quite some time and explore a great deal before ever finding one, on SMP servers they would not last long before all would either be destroyed or claimed.

The underground situation with the abandoned mines can be clearly seen in my previous post and is vastly overdone. Hopefully this pre-release is not too recent a 1.8 build as there seems far too much to fix given it is supposedly due out in a couple of days.

From the brief time i've played the leaked beta, currently had a quick scout around on two maps.. both times i've managed to find some abandoned mines.

I think the abandoned mines need to become more rare, as of now they seem to be everywhere.

Upgraded to 1.8 over the weekend including the server software and I find mydelf in a land of flat sided clifs with some hills and rivers at the bottom. a lot of it reminds me of when there is a corrupt chunk and the next area is just a big hold where you can see the caves and resources below but you don't get stuck when trying to go there. The good point is that you can hollow out some of the square rock faces and make a home pretty easily.

Loads of caves and quite a few Endermans (??) which are strange. Not had too much interactivity with them yet.

Have done more over the weekend playing than I had over the first few months on the pre 1.8 map. Iron seems to be more common as well as coal. Redstone is rarer so far.

Pigs give port chops uncooked, chickens give feathers and whole uncooked chicken and cows give beef (uncooked) and leather. Zombies give just rotten flesh that can be eaten but is not so good.

There is an experience bar which seems to do very little, a food bar and you take damage if it is on empty for too long.

One of the best bits though is the creative mode allowing free use of all the blocks so you can just build what you want.

Need to explore more and see what else has changed. The cliffs and hills also seem to be a bit more extreme.... :)

Having issues with my small melon farm I got up and running.

Screenshot: http://i54.tinypic.com/16ktjwn.png

Imagine the plots are:

o 1 2 o
o 3 4 o
o 5 6 o
o 7 8 o
o 9 0 o

Where "o" = farmland and the numbers are melon plants. I'm find that:

1 - 4 grow extremely quickly
5, 6 and 8 are quick
7 is average
9 is slow
0 takes an eternity

Any idea why? they all have the same amount of lighting, and are all hydrated with pretty much the distance from water.

You can't really do a fair test unless they all have the same amount of light and same distance to water.

Although I haven't looked at the code I'd also guess there might be a random time i.e. between 20 and 40 seconds before 1 grows, so that might throw you off too.

Is there a problem with creative mode and the nether at the moment?
Having problems with a map I edited with MCedit, I go into the nether and it gets slower and slower until I get an out of memory error. Chunks in memory seem to be about 800 at this point, which I thought was rather high.
Annoyingly, memory usage seems to be about 20% when it crashes.

Is it connected somehow to the huge stone cube I placed in the normal world?

I would imagine so, yes.

What are the dimensions of the block?

Are you using the .bat to allow minecraft to address more ram? That sorted my out of memory errors.

Anyone know of a good map renderer to an image file? using mcmap but the quality is low and once zoomed in it just looks awful, after high detail when zoomed. Would like to use zoom.it also rather than Google Maps so basically just want the image file.
