Minecraft (online Lego essentially)

Has anything been added into strongholds yet then? I wondered around one before, and while very exciting at first it quickly became boring, with nothing to do!

Strongholds have portals which take you to a new dimension. New blocks (for the portal), and silverfish spawners are the main additions. This is in 1.9 pre-release 3 which you can get here (copy and paste into .minecraft\bin folder).

1.9 Pre-release 4 is out now. Get it here.

New Realm: The End
It is currently a one-way trip to venture into, as the only way to get out is with death.
Glistering Melon
Enchantments
The Sun and Moon have been refined and no longer appear square.
The Sun and Moon now rise in the east and set in the west, based on the top of maps being North.
Flowers now grow randomly around the world like grass on dirt.
Strongholds are slightly larger and have a New Room where you find a Portal to the End
Strongholds have more Chests
Splash potions with Area of Effect when thrown, created by brewing an existing potion with gunpowder.
Implemented a swirl effect while under a buff.
Ghast Tears now cause regeneration and not instant health when brewed into a potion.
Glistering Melons cause instant health when brewed into a potion

Bug Fixes:

Smooth-mouse control via F8 has been restored.
Enchanting now works in multiplayer.
Shift click crashes in enchanting table and brewing stand now fixed.
Critical hits fixed in smp.

Notable Bugs: (Complete bug list)

Shooting a sheep with a bow crashes the game
New swirl effects don't show up in 3rd person front facing mode.
Ferns still do no spawn in any biome.
Eye of Ender doesn't always point to the nearest stronghold.
Melons drop just one slice[1]
Arrows shot with a fully charged bow into Enderman in The End will cause the game to crash. This breaks the world
The block palette UI is missing from the regular game screen after pressing F5 to cycle the third person views. The UI is missing but dimmed as usual when the inventory is visible.
According to Enchantments, Fortune seems to work only if the block would drop a different item type upon being mined; Fortune works for only coal and diamond ore.

1.9 pre4 Worlds

Below are three pre-generated worlds using the latest biome code, snow and ocean biomes are substantially greater in size than any other biome type. Each world is 7500x7500 and each only contains exactly 3 Strongholds, all within a radius of approximately 1100 blocks from spawn which is how it is currently coded, this means that regardless of world size there will be no Strongholds beyond this radius. For single player games this is good as they will all be within reasonable travel, multiplayer servers might find this limitation too restrictive.

I personally think the new biome code sucks. There are no more interesting hilly/vallley areas. Its either relatively flat identikit forests/plains/swamps, or big **** off bare mountains. And the mountains that are there seem few and far between compared to the other boring terrain types. And then there are the significantly larger oceans. I much prefer the old map code myself. I was hoping they'd bring back some halfway house wooded hilly areas like in 1.7, but no sign of them on those map renders.

The new biome code definitely needs tweaking, the spectacular mountain areas just don't seem to be there, each looks very similar to the next. I'm not sure if the intention is to mimic the distribution along the lines of the real earth, the ratio of water to land is making me think this. To give an idea just how much has changed, have a look at these two renders below (not mine, see credits at bottom), one is the 1.9 pre4 and is 70,000 x 70,000 blocks, the other is from almost a year ago and is 20,000 x 20,000 blocks.
While a choice of seed will result is a different configuration of the land, over a number of renders I'd found the ratios stay fairly constant overall in a sufficiently large map. With certain seeds you could end up with a 5k x 5k map entirely of water with only a few small islands, ideally you would prefer a central land mass of 1k diameter as this will make locating and utilising Strongholds much easier.

Big Snow biomes and dense forest looking better! Too much desert biomes for more liking but useful for players resources etc, also looks like there isn't any new biomes such as rainforest etc that Notch wanted to add.

Unfortunately if he does add additional biomes or alters the current biome distribution it will make the map incompatible with any new chunks generated, this is why pre-generating maps is preferable. This can be seen when the biome code was tweaked from 1.8 to 1.9, existing seeds would start to generate chunks significantly different resulting in mismatched landscape. The only changes that were made during 1.9 pre's was underground structure distribution, a reduction in the numbers of abandoned mines. Strongholds remain constant at 3 within a 1100 block radius of spawn.
