Although we are barely into this 'generation' of consoles, what mistakes do you think each manufacturer has made this time round and should take note of for next time?

To stop this turning into a flame war, the rule is for every mistake you point out, you must also point out a mistake on one of the other two consoles. They don't necessarily have to be related (though a lot of mine are). E.g:

  • 360: No hard drive as standard. DVDs are just too slow to read the amount of content we expect to see on screen. Caching is the answer.
  • PS3: Installing games. The other extreme of the hard drive issue, this takes away the 'spontaneity' of console gaming.
  • PS3: Insane marketing. This is living? Take the Wii's example: if you want to sell consoles, show how fun it is to play the actual games, not a random bald guy in a bath tub and a girl on a toilet.
  • 360: No marketing. I can count the number of Xbox ads I have seen with my fingers. To me the 360 just doesn't appear to be in the mind of the consumer as much as the Playstation 'brand' or the Wii hype.
  • PS3: Treating your customers like chumps. This is my big issue with Sony. Once again they hype a product into the extreme then deliver half of what they promised, then have the gall to stick an enormous price tag on it. Then they release a handful of different revisions, claim rumble is pointless then bring it out anyway. Riiiiidge Racer.
  • 360: Realising that your customers are in fact chumps. Halo 3. Marketing hype sold this game more than actual new features, IMO (it's not a bad game though).
  • Wii: Low third party attach rate. Mario sells big. Third parties are too scared to release new IPs onto the console in case they don't make a profit out of it.
  • PS3: Where are the games? Every time someone debates that in fact the PS3 has great games, they always say the same three examples: MGS4, GT5, FFXIII. Which aren't even out yet.
  • 360: Hardware failures. Do I really need to say anything else?
  • PS3: Software not quite there yet (N.B. I don't own a PS3 so I'm going on previous discussion on the subject). No XMB in game (yet), having to connect your wireless controllers to sync them to the console, no Live-esqe implementation.

I probably didn't word that very well. I mean connect it with a cable for it to see the controller.

My brother got a PS3 for Xmas and it struck me as a bit lame that you have to do that.

I'd probably also add more of Sony's pettiness to the list. Telling us that Rumble Feature is 'So last generation' and we don't need it.

Otherwise you are pretty spot on.

The 360 should have had a Blu-ray drive or Hd drive as standard. It would have held off the modders for a little longer. The 360 has a supposed high attach rate per game. Is this from shop purchases or other methods??

I'm sure they know the exact figures from looking at gamerscores but I bet the number of games via the modded route doesn't make great reading at microsoft. The gamerscore system gives them a decent look for once just how many people aren't buying games.

I agree the 360 shouldve had a hard drive as standard and the price of bigger drives should be much cheaper. Do they want a download service to work or not?

360:
  • No wireless built in.
  • 20GB HDD should have been bigger from day 1.
  • A better cooling solution to reduce noise levels would have been nice.
  • XBL Using "Points" rather than actual round number cash values.
  • Being able to customise the Dashboard more would be nice. EVERYTHING can be altered on the PS3's.
  • The failure rates, seriously? You couldn't make it up!

Wii:
  • Most third party games are poor.
  • Sick and tired of yearly churn outs of Mario/Zelda/Smash Bros. More Nintendo's fault than the Wii's though.
  • Playing the console alone just isn't fun (imho)
  • I Know GFX are not the be all and end all but they could have been better.

PS3:
  • Controllers should have had rumble from day 1.
  • PSN needs more content.
  • The Console has to be on to recharge the controllers. It doesn't go into a sleep mode like the 360 and turn itself off when it's done.
  • It needs more AAA titles.
  • Suffers from bad ports of some games. Certainly won't do it any favours.

I like all 3 consoles but they all have their niggling issues :)

In regards to the PS3 advertising, I agree to a degree.

I think the SCEE advertising is dire, to say the least, but have you had a chance to see the new SCEA adverts? They actually capture your attention and are miles better than a freaking poodle being held by someone who looks 'odd' to say the least.

In regards to controllers, I actually applaud Sony to a degree. As I'm not a fan of rumble, it's not a feature that matters to me and such will be overlooked by this point. The point I would like to applaud Sony on is the fact that they included rechargeable batteries as standard, compared to the 360 and Wii options which you have to buy a rechargeable pack or a bunch of batteries. And especially in the Wii's case where a full controller will set you back about what, the same price as the PS3 sixaxis if not more? But without rechargeable batteries. And I think the plugging in of the controllers on their first use to sync them up, pales in comparison of lacking rechargeable power straight out the box.

In regards to the ports issues, they're just that, ports, rarely do you ever see a port of a game being good, it's all down to the developer that does the work, as many games have shown.
On the other hand look at Burnout, said in fact by the dev team that the PS3 version is somewhat better on certain aspects.

I could go on I guess, but meh, time to look at another thread :p

seriously.. you are putting having to connect the controller to the ps3 with the cable for the first ever time you start it up as a mistake?....... As you never have to do this again i find that abit silly tbh

360: My main on has to be failure rate its what stopped me buying one tbh i cant stand it when things ive paid good money for go wrong in a short space of time

Wii: Not enough games.. well ill rephase that, Not enough proper games. most the games on it are just packed with mini games that you seem to have played in some form on a different game

PS3: No real AAA games this far on into the console life is a mistake.. could turn out to be a big one.. we will see

PS3 dev's need to learn ONLINE play from Xbox360... maybe the Live! infrastructure makes it easier for the dev's than having to create their own system, hence we get the abominations such as GT5;P online system1

i just wish the devs would go play PGR!

360's packaging, god damn its hard getting into. Even scissors struggle!

haha its true you end up hacking the thing to death.

Id say that the 360 flaws (apart from ones mentioned) are -

crap d pad.
dvd drive should spin slower.
backwards compat a bit ropey,
too many versions - confuses public
more res's for ppl with monitors
minor niggle its sometimes hard to get things in the usb as they are set back.

apart fro those and the ones others have mentioned I dont think there are many more. Its frankly pretty amazing right now.

Tried Burnout Paradise? Makes Live redundant.

Not all of them go wrong you know, and it is a better buy than the PS3 at the moment, mainly due to the exclusives.

Don't really see the point in the Wii, then again, I have never gotten Nintendo stuff as it always seems to appeal to the "younger" generation.

PS3 is overpriced and Fugly as hell, plus the controllers are naff and you can't use rechargables in them.

OK, the 360 could have done with a built in HDD, or at least one you could mod yourselves, but apart form that and the noise, it's spot on. :)

Worth while exclusives for the 360 are few and far in between.

As in regards to the aesthetic appeal of the PS3 compared to the 360? It's true neither of them is great looking, but I would not put the ps3 below the off white oddly curved 360 :P And like my post mentions above, it's the only console that has its controllers fitted with rechargeable batteries.

Why would you need to use rechargables in a PS3 controller ?? They already are rechargable from any USB port no need to but a recharge kit or a batt recharger. PS3 is available for 269 online with a 40 Gb HDD, built in Wifi, built in BD player, and free online the overpriced rountine dont work anymore.

Exclusives, there are a few, Halo3 is excellent, PGR series, Forza, and when you look at the DLC for GTA4, its the obvious choice ;)

The 360 looks great, the ps3 looks like a retro Video player, its hideous.

On the 360, when they run out, I can just put in more batteries... I would have to plug the PS3 ones in, and I bet the cable isn't long enough to stretch for me.

The online is free because people wouldn't pay for it as its not that good, Live is a much better service that I am happy to pay for because it does work.

When looking at the same games, the Graphics are better (usually) on the 360, the controller is better, and the load times are shorter than the PS3, due to the slow rate of data transfer from a BD.. Sony messed up with the PS3, like MS did with the original Xbox.
