MMORPG: Which one?

I played EQ2 for about a year before I gave up in frustration when SOE nerfed the Guardian. Couldn't have been bothered going right back and re-rolling a new toon. I'd still recommend the game though....the graphics are fantastic and the sheer amount of content will make your head spin.

WoW, I've never been able to get into. Tried a trial twice and it just didn't sit well with me.

Was in BETA for Tabula Rasa, and recently tried a 7-day trial of it. It's definately improved since the BETA stage, but is still noticably lacking in polish. If it was free-to-play it would be awesome, but it's not worth a sub.

Tried a trial of LotRO a few months ago and I actually really enjoyed that one. I've been debating whether to get back into MMOs via this one for a while, but decided to wait out for Age of Conan. Now I'm not sure whether to bother with that one either. Gah!

I personally like DnD online mainly due to the fact that pvp isnt really part of the game, so you dont have any capped players with uber kit running about killing you in the general public instances unless you got to the areas where pvp is, like the taverns.
Another reason i like it is free modules :), getting anew 1 in the next week or so which will introduce monks, also the quest instances are just for your party so no ppl running outside of your party killing the boss that you need to complete the quest.
1 done side of DnD is that it can get boring after awhile with the grind for materials and quest items to access the raids. Also the sub fees are pretty high imho just over £10 a month, inc vat, which i think AoC is as well.
So as people mentioned try the trials usualy 3-10 days of gameplay before splashing out your money that way you can find a game that suits your style of play

If you want to mainly PvP then I would say go for Eve Online

If you want Sci-fi based, then I would say go with EVE.

Eve Online = Win :D

has the Best PvP by far also has some good PvE aspects. But Eve is a harsh universe however once you start you cant stop ;)

Had a bash on EVE, a bit intense in terms of menus and all these bits and bobs, but the concept so far sits with me, not sure if its a payer for me yet, early impressions would say probably not.

Downloading LOTRs and will give that a shot.

I think i want a character based MMO rather than a ship (i guess i never get off my ship) i was hoping for an online mass effect.

To be honest, I'd say the best MMO in terms of PvP and PvE at the moment is WoW, although the main problem is that you have to level all the way up to 70 before you can really enjoy the game to its full, the journey up to level 70 isn't that great. But once you get there, the PvE content is very good, the PvP is probably the most balanced of any MMO at the moment, the arena system is very competitive, but overall the PvP is lacking content.

I don't mind the grind, i loved it on NWN and found myself with 100's of character over loads of mods due to that.

Can i only have one character, or can i have as many as i want? Is it one world or loads of different ones?

Starwars Galaxies is the best space based MMORPG, it's so iconic and starwarsy.

it was THE best pre CU NGE, EVE online has stolen the space crown for now ....

WoW ive never played nor will i, loads of mates are fanatics but i cant get past the community and teletubby gfx, but thats just me obviously it must have something..

Lotro is probably the most mature ive experienced since SWG, the game looks amazing in places but doesnt offer anything new , PvMp was the most fun for me after grinding 3 lvl 50s ..

i'd try a game where you can play with some mates as that can make the biggest difference

AoC is great for single playing, nice gfx but its a totally unfinished beta to be honest ... enjoying it though until i can sample WAR

You have to try WoW really. I played it on and off really for about two years.

Have so many fond memories of that game as me and my friends all leveled up and played it at the same time so it was great, but I found that when TBC came out, it destroyed a lot of the enjoyment in the game. 25 man raids were never quite the same as 40 mans, and although major improvements were made to the PvP system, it meant that some of the great instances were just instantly overlooked.

But yeah, it is the best MMO out there really and I don't think much really comes close to it, though I am hoping to try AoC soon.

Since you wanted opinions:

World of Warcraft - 6.5/10
Free trial
I liked it but found it slightly boring, graphical style isn't entirely my thing. Play about 12 months or so on and off. Gold sellers are a huge problem now though, only quit it last month.

Lord of the Rings online - 7/10
Free trial
Gorgeous looking game, quite tame but excellent storylines much like most MMORPGs. I really enjoyed playing it but found grouping and pvp rather frustrating at times. These have both improved and I'll probably play it now and then since I have a lifetime subs - although I doubt I would without it! Still an excellent game, but somehow I didn't feel it quite filled expectations.

Tabula Rasa - 5.5/10
Futuristic style appealled to me, might end up being a great game as it has an excellent concept but too many half baked ideas. I'm keeping my eye on it for the future though.

Eve Online - 8/10
Free trial
Simply the only online space trading game worthing thinking about, enormous game with a staggering number of people on the one server "world". However it can get tedious if you don't put the effort in to learn how things work. I think it's essentially an OS inside and OS. Great game, nice skill system too and one of the few that doesn't have blatant character levels! Also unlike many online games expansions are included in the subs, so you never need buy one!

Dark Age of Camelot - 8/10
Free trial
Probably my second favourite game of all time, in it's twilight years now thanks to a development team that didn't understand or listen to the player base. Too many expansions but it is the same people who will be releasing Warhammer later this year. Best PvP of any MMORPG, best large scale battles of any MMORPG and I'd argue the most fun. It's still worth playing, but I'd suggest sticking to "classic" servers as the normal ones require a silly number of expansions to unlock all the content.

Ultima Online - 9/10
Free trial
Put simply the daddy of them all and still the best, although not worth playing due to the shortsighted milking of the player base with expansions that made little sense and ruined the experience. It's essentially dead now, still a few die-hards playing but I'd only give it a shot if you had a really awful PC and wanted something to play and were bored of World of Warcraft. Not only the first commercially successful MMORPG but it also had no character levels, skills were much more like Eve and open to the player to customise your character to stupidly detailed levels.

These are only my personal opinion of the above games since I began playing MMORPGs over 10 years ago, I will not justify them to anyone. :)

Excellent post Kami, much appreciated.

Did you ever play the 1st NWN? And which one is closeet to it in style?

Yeah I played it to death mate ace game :)

I'd say probably DAOC and WOW would be tied, DAOC is probably closer in terms of character development, gaming world, classes and races but WoW really isn't a million miles off either.

If I had to pick it'd be DAOC but the game over there is changing constantly and it's far from new player friendly at times, however make friends in the game and you'll be sorted. WoW I found was more friendly to newbies and I didn't feel as left out at times. Those points are worthless if you find a group of people you like and join their guild though!

If you do go to DAOC do not play on the EU servers, stick to the US ones and the trial link I gave you, there's probably more UK players on the classic server cluster there than play on the EU servers!

I'm personally hoping to try Age of Conan soon, more down to my guild of friends I have than the game, just hope it's not dire :D

DAoC is still the best MMORPG out there imo. I'm playing AoC atm, and it's not as good so far :/ Only reason I'm playing is because the EU servers are dead.

DAOC realm v realm is still the best pvp I've been in, loved it whether it was 1on1, 8v8 or zerg v zerg.

Sometimes having 300+ people fighting over a castle can just be plain fun! Other times it's just a bit too laggy :D

Hello need some advice.

I was a huge huge huge Neverwinter Nights fan back in the day.

I was a great lover of NWN, it was my 1st insight into online rpg's. Nothing will ever compair to it in my opinion.

From there (about 3 years ago when my main NWN servers dried up) i went to guildwars - very good game but now waiting on GW2 as GW has got a bit quiet (maybe the latest expantion would be a good place to start - its free to play)

Then went to EQ2 - This is probably the best mmo for NWN'ers - all of my NWN buddies still play, i recentally went back to EQ2 and if my next experdition on AoC isnt any fun ill be making perment residance in EQ2 again.

WoW sucked me in for a long time too - Its NOT nwn, charactor creation is too easy (to a D&D player) and you might end up feeling like you have to play far too much to get to the best places (same as EQ2).

Give D&D online a miss unless your like me and found it for £3 - worth a crack for £3 (with free month) but its a bit boring everything is instances so you dont meet people wondering about. Its got the same rule set as NWN.

LotRO - Great game VERY polished for such a young game - I just got bored, no opposing factions wondering about to RP/PvP with. Saying that there is a special area to play bad guys, but this just didnt do it for me as its only one area.

Just take a week off and trial all you can. At the moment i would say EQ2 is the sure winner and is very newbe friendly. WoW is full of Leet people who dont want to take things slowley.

EDIT : I still go back to NWN1/2 all the time NWN>MMO's
