MMORPG: Which one?

Part-timer!

Lol, you are right in a way though, 30hrs is nothing to some of the people you see on Wow. I remember after playing warcraft for a year an a bit, the topic of /played time came up on my realm.

One of the most well geared players at that time had 240 days played time. That was in hardly any more than a year. The game to sleep ratio for that guy musta been insane lol

I played WoW for about a month I believe before putting it back in its box to gather dust. Game is ok, but the cartoon like graphics made me bored far too quickly.

Played LOTRO since early release and have a life time subscription. Have now put it away and probably wont return anytime soon as its got boring. I have outgrown the game and there isnt another appeal anymore.

Guildwars I played from release until just before LOTRO was released. I have not played another MMO as much as that, and to top it off it didn't cost a penny to play after the initial purchase.

Currently I am playing the beta of FM Live and loving it, but I am in to my sports games a lot more and have clocked up more hours on a game of FM08 than any other game I own so that probably says it all.

Unfortunately, with the exception of the FM series games lose their appeal with me too quickly.

Oddly I found Eve PvP quite annoying, felt quite uninvolved in the action most of the time. It is one of the best for strategy and teamwork but I'd certainly not say it was the best mate.

How long did you play eve for?

Over the 3 years that I personally have been in-game I have still not found another MMO like it which equals or beats it for PvP.

No 2 fights/skirmishes/battles are the same, there is always an unknown it how its going to turn out.

I have, I think, taken part in almost every kind of PvP there is...from solo, fleet, nano, pirate, gate camps, capital fights etc etc and still I enjoy every second. I have been in gangs/fleets with another 150 pilots right down to 2/3 man gangs and I have also lead similar sized gangs/fleets.

Well so far impressions suggest i wont be getting in to either LOTRs or EVE. :(

EVE looks a great game, very indepth experience and i'm guessing once you are in you are in, but for me it's just not sucking me in, i'm finding it very boring.

As for LOTR's it just seems flat in terms of just about everything, some terrible screen tearing which isn't fixing with v-sync on and really horrible control system.

Looks like i will need to download wow now and give that a shot, by the sounds of things it is what i'm looking for.

I suppose if you start WoW now, you might have a lvl 70 or two in time for the next Expansion.

Ill be honest mate, if your willpower isnt very high, and you dont have a girlfriend who would kick your ass, then there is a good chance that this game will drag you in deep.

I know it sounds silly, but if you lead a quiet life, dont expect to be going out much lol :D

I've got a couple of months to kill, its why i'm looking about, trying to stay in and save money and my liver which is praying for a decent holiday.

2.5 years for Eve and no I still don't think it had the best PvP system, it's good but I never felt fully involved in the action and quite remote from it.

Wow is giving me horrible download rates. Eve & LOTR's were a solid 500k all the way through, the is barely getting 100k and is talking about 13 hours +

+1 from experience, i guess its calmed down a bit now, the old PvP system was a lame excuse to keep people addicted (Guilty Warlord) the more you play the higher the rank you get, that and i was in a Fulltime raiding guild which demanded me 4 days a week of 4 hour raids and getting the potions for constant wipes.

It will suck you in, but by no means is it a bad game its just the gaming worlds equivalent to coke.

WoW or DAOC are the two that are closest to NWN. WoW is more polished but I'd say DAOC was closer to NWN and has a better feel to the game - people are marginally friendlier in WoW I think though ;)

Yeah this can happen. I was a bit of a lazy raider. IE, one of the ones that would accidently forget pots and pinch em off the people who had farmed while i was out at work lol.

Its a nice feeling when you work at downing a boss, each attempt getting closer/smoother. After a while it just gels together and the next thing you are farming it each week.

People take these games very serious, i personally never did, but ive seen numerous conflicts that arise from people taking loot, gquitting, arguing and changing realm etc. The mini community created in a guild can get a bit too silly at times. With certain people taking it as seriously as real life.

Bare in mind some people might wait weeks or months for an item to drop, then when it does, if someone else takes it for whatever reason (dkp, roll etc), and it is frowned upon... Then all hell breaks loose! lol

Yes, I vaguely remember that from when I loaded WoW and the expansion Burning Crusades at Christmas.

Even if you go out and buy the game box and DVDs it will want to to do a lot of time consuming downloads (patches).

But, it is a one off and it is worth it.

For me one of the most important aspects of any mmo is "polish". As an MMO matures it either dies or gets better and better. EvE, WoW for instance are mature, well supported, highly polished wonderful products with good support.
I agree with you, a game that doesn't get support and improvement in the long term will die. However, when you're first starting out a game, it's A LOT more fun to be with other people also starting out! Experienced players creating alts are jaded and no fun to play with, they're just trying to rush back to the endgame, they've no interest in exploring (they've seen it all), socialising (they've made friends already) or just muck about trying different things in the gameworld. That's why if you think you're gonna like a game, you might as well jump in from the beginning and be in the same boat as all the other wide-eyed newbies all excited about seeing this new world for the first time. :)
I really felt the lack of this when I played the DAOC trial about a year ago. It's not that the newbie areas were completely deserted, there were people about, but nobody would stop to chat, nobody would answer if you asked a question, everyone was rushing about to get somewhere.

BTW, bit OT but it's totally untrue about the button-mashing in AoC. If anything, just spamming the same skills/attacks will simply get you killed, it's demands much more of your attention than most other MMOs I've tried. It's a bit like a rhythm-action game, whereas in most games people just click a skill/spell, sit through its 5" activation time and rely on the autoattack the rest of the time. Not that it doesn't have its drawbacks - it's less relaxing gameplay, I don't think I'll be able to become addicted to this game simly cause it's more tiring to play. But I think it's more intense and fun to play, so I guess quality before quantity.:)

DAoC

they're re-release an OF type server for DAoC which should be up in the next 2-3 months.

Check the 2nd post down - www.camelotherald.com

this server should be a lot friendiler as there isn't the massive pve grind of toa/DR/dragon armor/Dragon weapon loot there currently is. Its going back to the days where you could get an SC suit which will be topped off with a 1 or 2 special dragon drops and when they implment it - high end Sidi/tg/galla drops when SI comes in.

I am playing AoC at the minute, enjoying it as I play it with several mates. However there are bugs and stuff is unfinished.

Although there was a letter from the Game Director on the official forums yesterday with a lot of planned stuff throughout summer, some coming before the end of June including more content and completely revamping several areas. Apart from WoW, AoC will be the most populated game for a while and if you like the idea of all out PvP it is worth looking into in a month or so, or if you only play casually picking it up now isn't a bad idea as the first 30 levels or have a fair amount of content and aren't as buggy as the rest of the game.

I would recommend leaving it a month though, but again only if you have a good computer as a friend plays on a not so great one and gets quite frustrated.
