MMORPGs - Which one to go for?

Should clearly get Matrix Online... Oh wait

MxO was actually really good for the first couple months while they were doing the live events. As soon as the events stopped (When Sony took over) and you looked around and realised that the environment couldn't be more boring and the 'quests' were all identical, it quickly went downhill.

Lol, i Just finished playing some of the Vanguard trial.

Got to lvl 5.

Suprisingly good fun actually, graphics are nice enough (although a little poorly optimized).. and the people on it are very friendly and helpful.

Im gonna mess about on it for the next week or so. Its definately worth a punt for the free trial at least!

Get yourself as far as one of the rentable flying mounts, never far from your starting area. Taking to the air and flying around a bit for the first time is a real jaw dropper.

LOTRO was absolutely ******* awful. The graphics were poor,

Oh come on! Whatever else you didn't like about it (I agree on the boring classes thing) it's probably the best looking of the lot :

I have to say firstly Lotro is pretty damn good, a lot of the classes are hidden fun that you really can't see at first. The minstrel, lets face it, couldn't be gayer if it tried. But once you hit lvl 20 you find yourself one of the few almost no induction time spells so you can just run around like a lunatic aggro'ing everything and smacking off craploads of damage(once you get warcry at 20 and a few AOE attacks you can rival most classes for damage with unparalelled healing). I was bored out of my brain after having a couple hunters at 50 but thought i'd give it a shout after one of there months they improved and added skills to the mincer, it really is fantastic.

AS for boring quests and not being intuitive, thats what I love unlike War with a quest system I completely dispise, i don't want to be told where everything is. In War unless there was a quest there I didn't go there, simple as that, no need, for me, dull uninspiring and massively overspawned area's make exploring so boring, grindy and dull I couldn't be bothered. The PvP might be ok(seems just as "simple" to me as WoW) but I don't like the world or any of the PvE.

Lotro has by far, and I mean by a massive distance, the best storyline, group quests of a reasonable length(wow raiding, yawn) and continuing storyline of any MMO i've played and easily out of WoW, Lotro and War.

I've been playing WoW again after playing 2-3 months over 2 years ago when I never got into it, using the RAF thing i'm buring through the levels and it really is a very nice world to play in, some nice instances on the way that aren't particularly grind-a-rific and enough quests that you can pretty much ignore every last "collect 15 used condoms from a dark knight having sex with a evil spider" quests there are which just add's to it at the moment.

For a quick blast, sign up with a friend and power through the WoW world if for nothing else, like I am, just to have a damn look at everything. I went back because I never got far and feel like I want to at least see most stuff before I complain, or don't complain about the game. triple xp on everything and loads of people on for similar reasons, done 1-38 so far and everywhere before 30 was packed, its only not packed as I was in some places people tend not to go for class quests.

I see people constantly asking for certain classes and certain specs, asking for good gear for high end instances. But amongst them is hundreds of people saying, casual guild with 20-40 people who don't care what you've grinded, just want to see the damn instances.

Think about it, 90% of this forum is against the grind and not getting into groups because of the "epic gear grind", that means if all 90% of you joined there would be hundreds of people who would also play for fun and not for the grind. Not to mention there are thousands of every single type of player in WoW, grinders, gold farmers, irritating twits, funny people, nice people, boring people, nasty people, young and old people. Which is pretty much the same as every MMO out there.

Lotro for long term I think, frequent additions, rarely "nerfed" things, they just add usability to classes rather than nerf other classes, which mostly means more fun for underpowered classes rather than less fun playing your high level alt that just got beaten with a nerf stick. The way most MMO's should be run, and one of the best looking games period, easily the best lookin MMO.

Entropia Universe - Whole thing is effectively free and has a RL economy

No, its not free. At least it wasn't when I played it a few years back. Basically they rouse players under "free to play" but the economy is geared towards loosing money. They run a conversion scheme between normal money and in game money. You can convert in game money back into cash as well.

Problem is that you cannot "make" money in the long term at all just like in a casino. The game revolves around giving you ever so slightly enough money back just to be that little bit less then you spend on playing. At least while running around fighting things.

Run a few experiments with it and it turned out your equipment degrades that little bit faster then money you gain from hunting things. I suppose if you dabble in the auction finding underprised things and being involved outside game mechanics as it were, you can "make" some money, but need to learn the market on there first.

Not knocking the game, it is a very interesting approach instead of monthly charges, its just very sneaky. But if you accept spending money on a game that claims to be "free to play" then its a good try. Just remember without money you won't be able to do much there other then explore and die... a lot

Oh, I forgot to mention both WoW and Lotro are bad for AH prices on low level good gear, all MMo's get like that, you don't spend long at low levels so drops of recipes and mats are lower simply because less bad guys are killed. I've made, in 2-3 days, about 300g on the AH selling herbs mining stuff and drops I couldn't use. its not hard

Did they revamp the engine because that doesn't look like the same game I played :P. Maybe bad wasn't the word I wanted. I found the designs flat, boring and uninteresting, and the world had no atmosphere to me. Technically the graphics were pretty good but there was no imagination or atmosphere in the level designs, or none that grabbed me anyway. *grumble grumble* marsh swamp thing *grumble*.

And if we're being picky, Age of Conan definitely has the best graphics of them all, it just sucks ;)

I feel that its a shame that WoW is so dominant. I dont deny that its a brilliantly made game, it really is very smooth and polished. And instancing with a group of good people can be fun. However it seems to make certain people act like total narrow minded morons.

I am totally happy to try different games, Ive played WoW (most extensively), War (nearly lvl 20), Lotro (lvl 16 or so), AoC (lvl 25ish) and ive just installed Vanguard last night.

Now I know WoW is the most polished, but lots of these other games are giving people a good time, and a lot of effort has been put into them.

LOTRO for example is absolutely beautiful to play. It runs flawlessly and the areas are so great to explore.

Warhammer is good fun, needs a few things improving, but its nice to pick up and play for a few hours at a time.

Age of Conan, like all people I gave it a go for the first month. I thought lvl 1-20 was brilliant, I thought it was visually stunning, I appreciated some of the ideas in play, but unfortunately it was a bit too floored for me.

Vanguard. First impressions from about 2hrs play last night, it looks very nice. It runs a bit dodgy at times, not very well optimised. It feels like a proper RPG though, I read the quests and I love the diplomacy side of it. It clearly isnt a bad game, but I think that peoples obsession with WoW makes them frown upon every other game without giving it a go.

It might seem a silly idea, but personally I would try LOTRO first, mainly because its a very good game, and because i feel that once people play WoW over any period of time, it kinda kills their love and acceptance for games in general. They feel the urge to compare everything to WoW and essentially they just ditch every single game they play.

Yeah, those pics have DX10 enabled. Softens edges and puts in realistic shadows - you get invidivual leaf shadows which makes it look gorgeous in wooded areas with the trees swaying and everything.

You mean this boring marsh thing ? :

Sorry, couldn't resist :D

I want to play it again now :(

Makes Warhammer feel like a girlfriend that's really good in bed but not nearly as good looking as your ex :D

LOL yeah, that boring marsh. Damn you and your unrespresentative arty screenshots! When I played there was no realistic lighting or anything, it was all grey flat and boring :P

I'd recommend Eve Online. Despite the steep learning curve, it's well worth the effort. I think it's the only true MMO as to really progress and make an impact you need to be in a group. Thinking about it that could be seen by some as a negative point, however playing alone is by no means impossible and still makes it a fun game.

Reading this thread really makes me want to try out another MMORPG, I really shouldn't start one but have had the urge recently. I'm tempted to give Vanguard a try since EQ & EQ2 were the last ones I quit.

I think if they were free to play i'd be signed up in a flash, I just can't justify £10pm any more. I guess GW is a possibility !

Warhammer for PVP and WoW for PVE, I wouldn't consider any of the rest unless you're desparate for a space one (Eve) or a mature community, better graphics but arguably less fun - Lord of the rings.
