MMORPGs - Which one to go for?

If you're wanting to play an MMORPG long-term then you only have two choices really unless you play extremely casual and them choices are World of Warcraft and Warhammer, as for which one I'd suggest depends on your playstyle, if you want PvE content, go for WoW, if you're interested in RvR/PvP, go with WAR.

I have to say firstly Lotro is pretty damn good, a lot of the classes are hidden fun that you really can't see at first. The minstrel, lets face it, couldn't be gayer if it tried. But once you hit lvl 20 you find yourself one of the few almost no induction time spells so you can just run around like a lunatic aggro'ing everything and smacking off craploads of damage(once you get warcry at 20 and a few AOE attacks you can rival most classes for damage with unparalelled healing). I was bored out of my brain after having a couple hunters at 50 but thought i'd give it a shout after one of there months they improved and added skills to the mincer, it really is fantastic.

AS for boring quests and not being intuitive, thats what I love unlike War with a quest system I completely dispise, i don't want to be told where everything is. In War unless there was a quest there I didn't go there, simple as that, no need, for me, dull uninspiring and massively overspawned area's make exploring so boring, grindy and dull I couldn't be bothered. The PvP might be ok(seems just as "simple" to me as WoW) but I don't like the world or any of the PvE.

Lotro has by far, and I mean by a massive distance, the best storyline, group quests of a reasonable length(wow raiding, yawn) and continuing storyline of any MMO i've played and easily out of WoW, Lotro and War.

I've been playing WoW again after playing 2-3 months over 2 years ago when I never got into it, using the RAF thing i'm buring through the levels and it really is a very nice world to play in, some nice instances on the way that aren't particularly grind-a-rific and enough quests that you can pretty much ignore every last "collect 15 used condoms from a dark knight having sex with a evil spider" quests there are which just add's to it at the moment.

For a quick blast, sign up with a friend and power through the WoW world if for nothing else, like I am, just to have a damn look at everything. I went back because I never got far and feel like I want to at least see most stuff before I complain, or don't complain about the game. triple xp on everything and loads of people on for similar reasons, done 1-38 so far and everywhere before 30 was packed, its only not packed as I was in some places people tend not to go for class quests.

I see people constantly asking for certain classes and certain specs, asking for good gear for high end instances. But amongst them is hundreds of people saying, casual guild with 20-40 people who don't care what you've grinded, just want to see the damn instances.

Think about it, 90% of this forum is against the grind and not getting into groups because of the "epic gear grind", that means if all 90% of you joined there would be hundreds of people who would also play for fun and not for the grind. Not to mention there are thousands of every single type of player in WoW, grinders, gold farmers, irritating twits, funny people, nice people, boring people, nasty people, young and old people. Which is pretty much the same as every MMO out there.

Lotro for long term I think, frequent additions, rarely "nerfed" things, they just add usability to classes rather than nerf other classes, which mostly means more fun for underpowered classes rather than less fun playing your high level alt that just got beaten with a nerf stick. The way most MMO's should be run, and one of the best looking games period, easily the best lookin MMO.
I am in agreement with you regarding LOTRO which I used to play. The one thing you failed to mention and is for me one of the most important things to consider when choosing a game, is the community. That is where LOTRO is so much better than any MMO I have ever played. There is a really friendly and helpful community and probably the reason why I will re-subscribe.

I too did not like WAR that much which is probably due to my preference for PvE which LOTRO handles very well. WOW too has very good PvE but I did not care much for the graphics or the community. So there you go, Viva la LOTRO.

Oh come on! Whatever else you didn't like about it (I agree on the boring classes thing) it's probably the best looking of the lot :

Looks fantastic that, definately a good game LOTRO is.

I would say go for WoW since i think it is the best MMO out. If not WoW then try LOTRO

*spits Sandwich all over the desk*

Runescape still exists? - I played that ages ago, web based game? Really REALLY bad graphics?

I ll have you know they recently got a graphical update :P, it looks pretty good, I popped back on for a wee gander but I havent been back on it that much tbh... went back on it for the new summoning skill then disappeared again. I dont mind it actually, Ive tried WoW and never stuck to it, and as sad as it sounds and as bad as the game is compared to Wow, LOTRO, I think its pretty good :P

*puts tin hat on*

I too am in the same position, I have a choice of three MMORPG's:

LOTRO, played the trial and liked it, classes are a bit boring though. Maybe I didn't get far enough into it. I only got up to level 4.

WoW: This is my last resort really, I don't know why, mainly because of the bad reputation of the players and the whole addiction thing. I understand most mmorpg's will have a level of addiction, but I don't want it to take over my life.

WAR: I like the look of this, Im new to MMO so would this be alright for me? Also how much are the monthly fees?

EDIT: Maybe even Guild wars? Not heard much about this game but it seems alright. Someone enlighten me?

Help me choose!

Thanks :)

Monthly fees for most mmorpgs are mostly the same, £8.99 +vat, so it comes to about £10.56, not sure if lotro still does it but it did have a lifetime subscription which was about £100.

World of Warcraft has the best combat system, honestly.

The game itself may be 'basic' compared to some others but everything that is in it is well done.

Getting to Lvl 4 on LOTRO is barely scratching the surface. Give it another go.

Its still got one of the nicest most mature communities out of the MMOs ive played

It's fantastic, has a friendly community, is fun, balanced and has a complete lack of grind. The PvP probably has a high entry point, but not because you need levels/gear/whatever you have to grind in other games - simply because, 3 years on, the skill level of the players is quite high. Still, you can practice in arenas and get good so that a decent gvg/HA guild will take you.

Downside is it's 3 years old, and most of the pve content isn't very crowded anymore. Last time I was logged in there were plenty of people running around, redoing missions to complete titles and stuff or levelling new characters, but now that they've got customisable henchmen few people bother to group. Still, I was hanging around in the lobby for a mission in the original campaign and 10" after I walked in 3 people invited me to group, so the old areas aren't quite deserted. Two of thsoe 3 had never done it before, so I'm guessing there's quite a few new players about.

Well just ordered WAR, hope it was a good decision.
Might try GW at a later date, as it's pretty cheap and there's no subscription fees.

Didnt want to ceate another thread, so reviving this one just to say, that the New Mod will be comming out for Dungeons N Dragons online, been wating over 6 weeks for the Eu to get it while the americans have had it for awhile.
So if you plan to give the Trial a shot maybe after tomorrow, should have DX10 and the new interface is far more user/noob friendly, so its supposed to be far easier for someone who has never played a rpg game to choose a class and not work about starting stats eg how many point do i put into Wisdom or Strength.

Are henchmen in? I was very tempted to re-sub when I heard about them, might actually make parts of the game soloable.

What with only getting xp for completed quests and stuff, I've never seen a game that tries harder to **** you off :p
